informations when I decided to investigate about this mysterious old incline.</p> <p><strong>Funiculaire des chutes Montmorency (Québec)</strong></p> <p>Ou les coulisses de mes recherches sur un funiculaire inconnu: funiculaire des chutes Montmorency (1901-1959) près de Québec au Canada.</p> <p>J’avais en ma possession uniquement cette carte postale ancienne (voir ci-dessous) quand j’ai décidé de faire des recherches sur ce mystérieux funiculaire.</p> <p> </p> <figure id="attachment_1644" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1644" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption investigate into that incline.<br />I soon found that there was a big waterfall at Montmorency, at 10 miles from Quebec and a funicular just beside this waterfall.<br />See below an actual photo of the Montmorency Falls just before the Montmorency river flows into the Saint Laurent river.</p> <p><em>Le week end dernier je me suis mis à la recherche d’informations sur ce funi.<br />Très vite j’ai trouvé qu’il y avait une énorme chute d’eau à Montmorency, à 15 km de Québec, et qu’il y avait eu un funiculaire près de cette chute. The today’s visitors can use a steep staircase on the right side to reach the bottom of the waterfall!<br />At the end I found this great 1915 photo (see below) in the McCord Museum!</p> <p><em>Mais pas de traces de funiculaire tout autour de cette chute! Les visiteurs d’aujourd’hui doivent utiliser un long escalier pour descendre au pied de la chute!<br />Finalement je finis par tomber sur cette photo extraordinaire de 1915 (ci-dessous) trouvée au McCord Museum!</em></p> <p><a href="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency05.jpg" data-slb-active="1" data-slb-asset="103335528" data-slb-internal="0" data-slb-group="1642"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1649" title="montmorency05" src="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency05.jpg" alt="montmorency05" width="500" height="399" /></a></p> <p>Yes it is a great photo because it is really a good quality picture with many interesting details like the cabin of the funicular, the bottom station and all these people… but what are they doing? They seem to wait for something… but what? The funicular? I don’t think so because the cabin is there… they are waiting for something else… but what? The answer in on the old postcard (see above). At the bottom of the funicular there are 3 railway wagons! So… there was a railway at the bottom of the funicular… a railway to go to the waterfall? The funicular was supposed to carry down the visitors to the railway for going to the real bottom of the waterfall…<br />See below the same photo after some improvements in Photoshop!</p> <p><em>Extraordinaire car c’est un document exceptionnel, de très bonne qualité photographique avec cette cabine et cette gare du funiculaire et puis tous ces gens… mais que font-ils là? Ils semblent attendre… mais quoi? le funiculaire? je ne pense pas puisque la cabine est là… ils attendent autre chose… mais quoi? La réponse est sur la carte postale ancienne colorisée (ci-dessus). Au pied du funiculaire que voit-on? On aperçoit trois wagons d’un train! Il y avait donc un train au pied du funiculaire… un train pour aller à la chute? Le funi devait servir à descendre les visiteurs au bord de l’eau afin qu’ils puissent prendre un petit train pour les amener au plus près de la chute d’eau…<br />Voici ci-dessous, la même photo après une petite amélioration dans Photoshop.</em></p> <p><a href="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency06.jpg" data-slb-active="1" data-slb-asset="1927284579" data-slb-internal="0" data-slb-group="1642"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1650" title="montmorency06" src="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency06.jpg" alt="montmorency06" width="500" height="383" /></a><a href="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency04.jpg" data-slb-active="1" data-slb-asset="1223644006" data-slb-internal="0" data-slb-group="1642"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1653" title="montmorency04" src="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency04.jpg" alt="montmorency04" width="500" height="316" /></a></p> <p>But where was exactly located the funicular?<br />I carried on my investigations at the McCord Museum and I found this new photo (see below)… it is the Kent House in 1900, the old residence of Prince of Kent… and then the penny dropped!</p> <p><em>Mais où était donc situé ce funi?<br />Je continue mes recherches au McCord Museum et je tombe sur cette photo (ci-dessous) de la maison Kent en 1900 (ancienne résidence du duc de Kent)… et là ça fait tilt! </em></p> <p><a href="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency01.jpg" data-slb-active="1" data-slb-asset="1384256526" data-slb-internal="0" data-slb-group="1642"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1654" title="montmorency01" src="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency01.jpg" alt="montmorency01" width="500" height="387" /></a></p> <p>I already saw this building!… Where?… For God’s sake it is on the old postcard again! Look at the old postcard again… you can see the Kent House at the top-right of the funicular! Now I only have to find out where was the Kent House on a map… Let’s try Google Earth… and I found a building with the same roof and the same garden as in 1900!!! Here… 46°53’16.05″N / 71° 9’0.07″W. The Kent House, its garden and the fountain are exactly the same one century after! So I can now deduce that the funicular was just on the right of the fountain in the garden beside the cliff which dominates the Montmorency river just before its falls into the Saint Laurent river.<br />Now back to the McCord Museum again and I found this new this wonderful aerial 1929 photography (see below) which shows a general view of the site… with the Montmorency Falls in the background, the Kent House on the left, the Saint Laurent River in the bottom-right corner… and what else can we see? We can see the funicular! I inserted two red arrows to delimit the funicular… We can also see a railway track at the bottom of the funicular! The same railway as on the old postcard! But we also can see that the railway track does not go to the bottom of the waterfall… in fact, the bottom of the funicular id the end station of the railway track!!!</p> <p><em>Cette maison je l’ai déjà vue quelque part!… Où çà?… bon sang mais c’est bien sûr! C’est sur la carte postale ancienne! Regardez bien la carte postale ancienne du haut… on voit la maison Kent en haut à droite du funiculaire! Reste plus qu’à trouver où se trouvait la maison Kent… Un petit coup de Google Earth et je tombe sur une bâtisse avec un jardin ( 46°53’16.05″N / 71° 9’0.07″W )… même toit et même jardin depuis plus d’un siècle! La maison Kent, son jardin et sa fontaine n’ont pas changé depuis 1900! Le funiculaire était donc situé au fond du jardin près de la fontaine, au bord de la falaise qui donne sur la rivière Montmorency, juste avant qu’elle ne se jette dans le fleuve Saint Laurent.<br />Je continue mes recherches au Musée McCord pour finalement trouver cette magnifique photo aérienne de 1929 (ci-dessous) qui montre une vue générale du site… avec la chute Montmorency au fond, la maison Kent à gauche, le fleuve Saint Laurent en bas à droite devant le pont… et puis que voit-on d’autre? On aperçoit le funiculaire marqué par les deux flèches rouges ainsi qu’un train en bas du funiculaire! Le même train que sur la carte postale ancienne! Mais que voit on aussi sur cette photo aérienne?… et bien que le train ne va pas jusqu’à la chute mais qu’en fait il s’agit d’un terminus du train!!!</em></p> <p><a href="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency08.jpg" data-slb-active="1" data-slb-asset="414912383" data-slb-internal="0" data-slb-group="1642"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-1655" title="montmorency08" src="https://www.funimag.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/montmorency08.jpg" alt="montmorency08" width="500" height="395" /></a></p> <p>In fact after some more investigations I found that this railway was the Quebec-Montmorency-Sainte Anne de Beaupre Basilic railway. The railway line was opened in 1900. To lead to the Montmorency Falls the trains was obliged to follow a ‘wye’ diversion (see below) of the track. The visitors had to use the funicular to climb up the cliff to the Kent House and to follow a path which went to the top side of the Montmorency Falls. The people on the 1915 photo were waiting for the train to Quebec instead of waiting for the funicular!</p> <p><em>En fait après quelques recherches, je trouve que ce train c’était la ligne Québec-Montmorency-Sainte Anne de Beaupré et sa basilique. La ligne fut inaugurée en 1900. Pour aller aux chutes Montmorency, les trains devaient se rendrent au pied du funiculaire en empruntant une dérivation en Y (ci-dessous). Les visiteurs de la chute devaient alors prendre le funiculaire qui les montait à la maison Kent et de là se diriger à pied jusqu’au haut de la chute d’eau. Not a ‘stricto sensus’ funicular as a real funicular is composed of two counterbalanced cabins. But this cabin was also counterbalanced but by a counterweight which was rolling on its own track just below the cabin.<br /><em>On peut noter qu’il s’agit d’une monocabine sur une voie unique (aussi appelée ascenseur incliné). Ce n’est pas ‘stricto sensus’ un funiculaire parce qu’un vrai funiculaire est composé de deux cabines contrebalancées. Quant au Manoir Montmorency, anciennement le Kent House, il a déjà été la proie des flammes puis reconstruit. I am sure they used the power of the river. I guess this factory and the tourism were the main reasons for the construction of the railway you mentioned. The factory itself was been closed 1987 and burnt down 1993 and 1994.
