In the deceased gentleman the African race have lost an c:rneet friend, the best energies of whose life may bo said to have been spent in the endeavour to sacuro theirliberties and rights, and to promote their welfare. From all early period of his life lie devoted himself to the cause ot the oppressed slave and the scarcely less oppressed free colouced man. In 18IS lie published his \"\u0027Tribute for the Negro,\" which may be described as a cycloptudia of facts, aerecdotes, biographical sketches, argumeists, and authorities, in vindication of the \"moral, intellectual, and religious caipabilities of the coloured portion of rnankiisd.\u0027 Tho work is a handsome 8ve. of near 600 pages, and bears evidence of wide and laborious research. In IS;D he brought out a revised and touch improved edition of the life of 1ho Americau philanthropist, Anthony Benszet, oiipinally published in the United States. Mr. Armistead was an iudcfatigable correspondent Oll behalf of the ol\u0027rresbed with friends of the anti-slavery cause throughout Great Britain and North America; and he was as liberal with his pecuniary means as with his pen. lIe was a rin of a singularly amiable disposition and retiriun habits. From his marked preference for undemonstrative means, such as qliiet correspondence and private injlueoce, for eitectig his cherished objects, it hapopeed that he was earlier and better-known as a philanthropist in America, Scotland, and elsewhere at a distance, than bere in Lis own towin, wbere, however, he was much and deservedly esteemed. Mr. Armistead was a member of the Society of Friends, to which his anceetore have belonged for several genieratiosit. Ere was warnaly attached to its principles, and often emiployed his pen in its service. In 185l he published a little work in six vol umes, emititled \u0027\u0027Select hiiscellamios,\u0027\u0027 a collection of anecdotes und ona illustrative of the history and Christias principles of the Society. Throughout all these years he was closely engaged in business, first ais junior, thee as senior partner in the firm of J. and J. Armistead, mustard manufacturers and oil crushers. His philuanthropic labours never encroached on his duties as a man cf busincess. The hours which others devote to relaxation, and too often, we fear, those due to needful rest, he dedicated, in severe and sedentary labour, to the service of his fellow-men. These sell-sacrificing amid most disinterested exertions may possibly have irapairod a costitution never very robuiEt, aniL indirectly led to the early close of his valuable life. lHe was taken ill a few weeks ago, of internal gout, but appeared to be recovering. An attack of sickness, however, ending in a leintisig lit, suddenly terminated his life. During his last illness his mind was occupied with the cherLihed objects of his life. lie sent messages and suggestions to his friends on behalf of the freedmen of the United States; asd one of his latest efforts was to send soule volumes to a friend as a contribution to a library for the -egroes at a Moravian mission statiou in Jamaica. We abelieve the latest of }is very few appearances on a public platform was on the occasion of the visit of Mr. Lloyd Garrisous to Leeds, on the 21st October, 1867. Mr. Armistead read the address (which ho had himself nrepared) which was preseuted on behalf of the meeting to that enuinclit anti-slavery man. Mr. Armuistead, in addition to being a staunch friend to the negro, had also a deeply-sympathisinhg heart for suffering end distress in every shape, and this lie maanifestod by generous subscriptions to all our local charities. Beiag of a very retiring disposition he never filled any public office in the towu, and tool no part in politics. In 18IS lie published his \"\u0027Tribute for the Negro,\" which may be described as a cycloptudia of facts, aerecdotes, biographical sketches, argumeists, and authorities, in vindication of the \"moral, intellectual, and religious caipabilities of the coloured portion of rnankiisd.\u0027 Tho work is a handsome 8ve. of near 600 pages, and bears evidence of wide and laborious research. In IS;D he brought out a revised and touch improved edition of the life of 1ho Americau philanthropist, Anthony Benszet, oiipinally published in the United States. Mr. Armistead was an iudcfatigable correspondent Oll behalf of the ol\u0027rresbed with friends of the anti-slavery cause throughout Great Britain and North America; and he was as liberal with his pecuniary means as with his pen. lIe was a rin of a singularly amiable disposition and retiriun habits. From his marked preference for undemonstrative means, such as qliiet correspondence and private injlueoce, for eitectig his cherished objects, it hapopeed that he was earlier and better-known as a philanthropist in America, Scotland, and elsewhere at a distance, than bere in Lis own towin, wbere, however, he was much and deservedly esteemed. Ere was warnaly attached to its principles, and often emiployed his pen in its service.
