<p>理县位于州境东南部，地处北纬30°54′～31°12′、东经102°33′～103°30′。东邻汶川，西南连小金，西接马尔康，北依茂县、黑水，西北靠红原。县境东西长83公里，南北宽78.2公里，地跨岷江上游支流杂谷脑河两岸。幅员面积 4313．415平方公里。耕地面积 47296亩，人平耕地 1．38亩。理县历史悠久，新石器时代杂谷脑河畔就有人类生息繁衍。《禹贡》为梁州之域，秦属湔氐道，西汉元鼎六年（公元前111年）置汶山郡，始入中央版图。西汉地节三年（公元前67年）设广柔县，属蜀郡。东汉灵帝光和七年（178年）属汉山郁。隋开皇六年（587年）置金川县（治所今通化乡卡子村）。仁寿元年（601年）改为通化县。唐武德八年（625年）置维州和薛城县，后陆续设小封县、维州和定廉县。宋、元设为霸州和保宁县。明永乐五年（1407年）置杂谷安抚司。清乾隆十七年（1752年）改土归流，废杂谷土司，设杂谷厅（治所今薛城）；乾隆二十五年（1760年）升为直隶厅；嘉庆八年(1803年）改为理番直隶厅，辖域辽阔，有“四土、五屯、九枯、十家、三番、六里”之称。清乾隆十七年（1752年），剿灭杂谷土司苍旺，改土归流置理番直隶厅，取治理番民之意。民国初期改厅州为县，民国35年（1946年）为缓和民族矛盾去“番”得名。 1990年，全县人9200户、41925人（含川西林业局人口），其中城镇人口约占18％，农村人口约占82％。人口出生率13．67‰。每平方公里9．72人。县内资源丰富，具有极大的开发潜力。有林业用地336．19万亩，占总土地面积的51．8％。其中，林地194.9万亩，占林业用地的57.88％；活立木蓄积量2598.4万立方米；森林覆盖率为30.07％；用材林面积为 17.5％；蓄积量为 11. 62％；防护林面积为 0．02％。主要树种有冷杉、桦、柏、云杉、油松、落叶松、高山标以及文冠果、香樟、白杨、漆树、檀木、沙棘等。有珍稀动物小熊猫、扭角羚、毛冠鹿、金钱豹和鹦鹉、画眉、杜鹃、雉鸡等。有灵芝、香菇、木耳等野生食用菌类。盛产品质优良的虫草、贝母、天麻、黄芪、羌活、当归、麝香、鹿茸、熊胆、豹骨等名贵药材。矿产资源有铜、锡、铁、铅、锌、金、银、铝、钛和非金属矿大理石、硅石、金钢砂、石英石、云母、花岗石、硫磺等。其中仅有大理石、金钢砂和硅石被开发利用。河流落差大，水能资源丰富，可开发量达42万千瓦，已建成中小电站37座，总装机47台，3．54万千瓦。有经济林木苹果、花椒、核桃、樱桃、石榴、雪梨等。1990年，全县已建成苹果园3095亩，种植苹果52．38万株，产量 132.5吨。还有箭竹等野生藤竹资源可供开发利用。 1950年以前，理县工业仅有私营的两个规模小、设备简陋、采伐能力差的伐木场和少数零散个体工业户。解放后，特别是改革开放以来，加快了工业的发展。到1990年，全县已有全民和集体所有制工业企业42个，职工
