Since 2005, the concept has gained momentum in Thailand and within Bhutan, which is developing a set of indicators for tracking progress toward what would otherwise be an awfully amorphous goal. The themes in this piece have resonated on Dot Earth repeatedly. Below I’ve pasted a few fun excerpts from the story, which revolved around a conference in Nova Scotia on Bhutan’s social experiment:

Defining Happiness

The founding fathers, said John Ralston Saul, a Canadian political philosopher, defined happiness as a balance of individual and community interests. “The Enlightenment theory of happiness was an expression of public good or the public welfare, of the contentment of the people,” Mr. Saul said. And, he added, this could not be further from “the 20th-century idea that you should smile because you’re at Disneyland.”

Outdoing the Joneses

[B]eyond a certain threshold of wealth people appear to redefine happiness, studies suggest, focusing on their relative position in society instead of their material status. Nothing defines this shift better than a 1998 survey of 257 students, faculty and staff members at the Harvard School of Public Health. In the study, the researchers, Sara J. Solnick and David Hemenway, gave the subjects a choice of earning $50,000 a year in a world where the average salary was $25,000 or $100,000 a year where the average was $200,000. About 50 percent of the participants, the researchers found, chose the first option, preferring to be half as prosperous but richer than their neighbors.

The Trouble With Money

Participants focused on an array of approaches to the happiness puzzle, from practical to radical. John de Graaf, a Seattle filmmaker and campaigner trying to cut the amount of time people devote to work, wore a T-shirt that said, “Medieval peasants worked less than you do.” I spoke with Dr. Lubchenco briefly as the meeting adjourned. Here are her impressions of the most important outcomes.

From Weather Services to Climate Services: She hailed the decision by the 1,500 participants, convened by the World Meteorological Organization, to establish a Global Framework for Climate Services “to strengthen production, availability, delivery and application of science-based climate prediction and services.” Dr. Lubchenco has made the expansion of a National Climate Service in the United States a high priority. The goal is to help farmers, city planners and other people adjust investments and activities to account for shifting climate patterns in the way they rely on the National Weather Service for day-to-day advice.

For the moment, such efforts face challenges, including the persistent inability of computer climate simulations to reliably replicate climate patterns at the scale of states and cities.

Dr. Lubchenco pointed to examples of federal forecasting programs that provide a model for better things to come. “We’re beginning to see convergence between what users need and science can deliver,” she said. “We’re not there yet. But we already do a lot of regional scale predictions, such as those provided by the National Integrated Drought Information System.”

Filling Climate Data Gaps: I asked her whether the conference attendees focused on filling gaps in basic information on weather and climate, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and other poor regions, and she said this was a prime focus. Read more…

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/countries-pledge-to-boost-climate-forecasts/', 'Countries Pledge to Boost Climate Forecasts', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/countries-pledge-to-boost-climate-forecasts/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/countries-pledge-to-boost-climate-forecasts/'); Dr. Brigham said the Beluga shipments are probably the vanguard of what will be decades of exploratory efforts to normalize such trade. But he doubts that big container shipping companies, which require predictability, will be eying such routes any time soon, given both the climatic and bureaucratic obstacles. Dr. Brigham said that to a large extent, it is Russian bureaucracy more than sea ice or icebergs that is impeding international use of the Arctic route along its coast, which has in theory been open to such transit since 1987.

He added that, for the record, the Beluga shipments do not constitute the first commercial transit of non-Russian vessels through the fabled Northern Sea Route (also called the Northeast Passage). Read more…

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/commercial-arctic-passage-nearing-goal/', 'Commercial Arctic Passage Nearing Goal', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/commercial-arctic-passage-nearing-goal/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/commercial-arctic-passage-nearing-goal/'); He telegraphed word of his claim to the New York Herald, which filled its front page with the news on Sept. 2, 1909, utterly scooping The New York Times, which helped underwrite the North Pole expedition of Robert E. Peary.

Here’s John’s lede:

Precisely 100 years ago today, the New York Times newsroom must have been a gloomy place. The newspaper was a sponsor of Robert E. Peary’s polar expedition, but Peary still hadn’t been heard from as of Sept. 2, 1909. On that day, the New York Herald’s entire front page was devoted to the scoop that it had just received by telegram from Peary’s rival: “The North Pole Is Discovered by Dr. Frederick A. Cook.” Now, just in time for the centennial anniversary, a historian has found the pieces of paper that started the great Cook-Peary polar controversy: Cook’s hand-written drafts of the telegrams that he sent to the Herald and to a European observatory from Lerwick, the capital of the Shetland Islands. Read more….

Somewhat reminiscent of today’s debates over baseball records and steroids, the fight over who was first to the top of the world is tainted. For example: Could engineers pump chemicals into the atmosphere to increase the amount of sunlight reflected away from Earth, cooling the planet? Almost certainly, the answer will turn out to be yes.

But would the consequences of this step or any other climate-altering geoengineering be acceptable? From an engineering standpoint, that question is hard to answer – no one can say for sure what the consequences might be. Beyond that, though, what is “acceptable?” This is not a question that scientists or engineers have the authority to answer.

Although geoengineering is a subject of lively debate among a relatively small group of scientists, so far there has been little public discussion. Now the Royal Society, Britain’s leading scientific academy, has entered the debate with a new report, “Geoengineering the Climate.”

At the moment, the technology of geoengineering “is bedeviled by much doubt and confusion,” the astrophysicist Martin Rees, who heads the Royal Society, writes in the report’s introduction. “Some schemes are manifestly far-fetched, others are more credible, and are being investigated by reputable scientists; some are being promoted over-optimistically.” Read more…

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/engineering-a-climate-solution/', 'Engineering a Climate Solution', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/engineering-a-climate-solution/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/engineering-a-climate-solution/'); But I never caught (and released) something almost four feet long until this short sunset trip, when slab-sided striped bass seemed to be waiting 40 feet beneath our boat no matter where we stopped.

In the video above, Dr. Safina explains the merits of leaving the biggest fish in the sea, noting that the largest females, like a 40-pounder he wrestled to the boat, produce 10 times as many eggs as fish half their size. You can chuckle as I heft a 46-inch bass I hauled in after it nearly hauled me into the water.

Some might snip that releasing lunkers only makes sense in a wealthy place like the United States, where your next meal isn’t something you have to catch. But from Caribbean islands like St. Lucia to the Bering Sea, fishing communities are learning that a balanced effort — leaving breeding-size fish uncaught or breeding spots untouched — is the best path to healthy harvests.

Of course, many fisheries around the world remain in crisis, particularly the bluefin tuna, a longtime focus of Dr. Safina. And we do still have a fixation with size that impedes a variety of conservation efforts. (Biologists say deer hunters could better manage overabundance by targeting does instead of the biggest bucks.) Back at the dock in Montauk, the marina — like many — had a board listing the largest fish taken, not the biggest catches of midsize fish. No surprise. There’s a deep-rooted human tendency to glorify the biggest. That largemouth I caught around 1968 is now a tattered bit of taxidermy.

Dr. Safina is trying to show you can feed that passion and, by letting the biggest specimens go, still have fish in the sea (or pond) for a long time to come.

Another option is to get your wall trophy the 21st-century way, ordering a pre-fab fish replica to size, instead of the skin-on-plaster variety. Does he see a viable real-world path to his “steady state” vision of the economy?

Yes Andy, I do. And it is clear that the growth-driven path is not viable, and in all likelihood no longer even economic. The Classical Economists already laid it out long ago, especially John Stuart Mill. Recently the “real-world path” you refer to has been outlined by the British Sustainable Development Commission in their report “Prosperity Without Growth” [Dr. Daly wrote the foreward]. Also the path for Canada has been carefully studied by Canadian economist Peter Victor in “Managing Without Growth: Slower by Design, Not Disaster“. In addition see the C.A.S.S.E. statement on economic growth and its conflict with biodiversity preservation (see steadystate.org) signed by many professional organizations and individuals, including Paul Ehrlich and I think E.O. In this case, there are varying time perspectives. One can be concerned with the recovery from the current serious recession, a matter of one or two years; one can be concerned with the economic development of the United States and of the world in the next decade; and one can be concerned with the long-run evolution of a world of limited resources, the matter to which you give stress in your address to Professor Daly and in your reference to the puberty of the economic world. I will briefly address each of these time perspectives.

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/an-upside-to-the-consumption-chill/', 'An Upside to the Consumption Chill?', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/an-upside-to-the-consumption-chill/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/an-upside-to-the-consumption-chill/'); So we’re pleased to present a photograph of a snow leopard, taken by a camera trap in the Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan. (Here’s more on camera traps and Afghanistan’s elusive wildlife.)

Camera traps are used by conservationists to document the presence of animals that because of their rarity, behavior or other factors would otherwise be seldom seen. The basic trap consists of a camera and a means of triggering it — often an infrared device or some other motion sensor.

Workers try to set the traps in areas the target animal is likely to pass through — en route to a water or food source, for example. And the sensor is calibrated so that smaller animals or swaying tree limbs shouldn’t trigger it. Despite all this, camera traps don’t always capture their quarry. And even when they do, the subject is sometimes out of focus, or half out of the frame or plagued by red eye. And sometimes you get a fabulous shot of the animal’s derriere.

This photograph, though, is spectacular (if a trifle cockeyed). The trap was set up by workers with the Wildlife Conservation Society, the people who run the Bronx Zoo and undertake conservation projects around the world. In the Wakhan Corridor they are conducting wildlife surveys with the eventual goal of establishing a protected area.

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/28/rare-photo-of-snow-leopard-in-afghanistan/', 'Rare Photo of Snow Leopard in Afghanistan', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/28/rare-photo-of-snow-leopard-in-afghanistan/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/28/rare-photo-of-snow-leopard-in-afghanistan/'); For some of them, nanotechnology has been a hot topic. And according to a report this week by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies, there is more than ever for them to worry about.

The project, a partnership begun in 2005 by the Wilson Center and the Pew Charitable Trusts, says there are now more than 1,000 products made with nanoparticles — substances engineered on the scale of a billionth of a meter, 1/10,000 the width of a human hair or smaller.

Nanoparticles are turning up in all kinds of things — toothpaste, sunscreen, tennis rackets, non-stick cookware and even, the center says, tiny wearable sensors that monitor your posture. (The PEN nanotech inventory’s latest update is here.)

Is there any evidence these substances pose any kind of serious threat? The answer seems to be “not yet.” But in a report that I wrote about last year, an expert panel convened by the National Research Council sharply criticized the federal government’s efforts to identify possible health or environmental risks of nanotechnology.

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/nano-toothpaste/', 'Nano Toothpaste', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/nano-toothpaste/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/nano-toothpaste/'); Tilling and other practices leave farmland vulnerable to erosion; precious topsoil is literally being washed away.

Over the years, the issue has been framed in many ways. A 1984 NBC News report, for instance, described the amount of topsoil lost to erosion as enough to fill the Houston Astrodome 34,000 times over. More straightforward estimates suggest that worldwide, some 25 billion tons of valuable agricultural soil is eroded every year.

A study in Nature Geoscience puts the problem in another way, one that perhaps makes the situation seem even more dire. Conventional farming, the study’s authors write, erodes farmland at rates comparable to what nature does in some of the most rugged parts of the planet.

“We’re discovering that we as humans, in our agricultural practices, are actually eroding the land at a rate similar to the biggest glaciers and rivers in the world,” said the study’s lead author, Michelle N. Koppes of the University of British Columbia. “Humans are as powerful an agent of geomorphic change.”

So what’s wrong with that? The real problem, as Dr. Koppes notes, is that the land that humans are washing away is not being remade.

// NYTD.blogsCRNRObj.setPostData('', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/giving-earth-that-worn-down-feeling/', 'Giving Earth That Worn-Down Feeling', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://community.nytimes.com/comments/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/giving-earth-that-worn-down-feeling/', 'https://web.archive.org/web/20090906131350/http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/giving-earth-that-worn-down-feeling/'); Those billions will be seeking food, water and other resources on a planet where, scientists say, humans are already shaping climate and the web of life. In Dot Earth, reporter Andrew C. Revkin examines efforts to balance human affairs with the planet’s limits. Conceived in part with support from a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, Dot Earth tracks relevant news from suburbia to Siberia. The blog is an interactive exploration of trends and ideas with readers and experts.
