遥远的古代，在五指山区是一片开阔的平原。平原上住着一对勤劳的黎族夫妇，男的叫阿立，女的叫邬麦，他们生下5个孩子，全家7口种着自己披荆斩棘、辛勤开垦出来的半亩田。土地是肥沃的，可生产工具却很落后。没有锄头，用木棍代替；没有刀斧，将石头加工后使用；连种子也是采集来的野生稻种。这家人的日子过得十分艰苦。　<br /> 一天夜里，除了阿立，全家都已酣睡入梦，独有他一人在床上辗转反侧，寻思如何才能增加收成，直至深夜，才昏昏睡去。忽然，一位须发全白的仙翁，走到阿立床前，大声对他说，你们开垦的这块土地是十分肥沃的，要好好种。你家茅屋近旁地地下埋着一把宝锄和一把宝剑，快把它挖出来。只要举起宝锄喊声“挖”，荒地便会长出好庄稼；挥动宝剑叫声“砍”，参天大树会应声倒地。要是有坏人来欺侮你，只要手擎宝剑大喝一声“杀”，坏人的脑袋就会搬家。第二天清早，阿立全家立即动手，按梦中仙翁的指点，果然挖到了宝锄和宝剑。他们用剑砍倒了一棵棵大树，用锄垦出一块块田地，种上大片庄稼，日子也一天天好过起来。由于有宝剑保护，坏人也不敢来伤害他们。</div><div>　　多年以后，阿立去世。他儿子依照母亲邬麦的意愿，把宝剑当作了父亲的陪葬品。这消息被坏人亚尾悄悄传给了海盗。于是这帮家伙纠集了数百人，霸占了阿立一家的土地，还杀死了邬麦，把五兄弟都抓了起来。　</div><div>　　坏人亚尾把五兄弟锁在铁链上，连续拷打了十天十夜，强迫他们说出宝剑的埋藏地点。但五兄弟谁也不肯吐露半点口风，后来都被杀害。五兄弟的英勇行为感动了栖居在这一带的熊、豹、蚁、蜂与鸟，它们成群结队，从四面八方集拢起来，咬死了亚尾和海盗。随后，这些见义勇为的动物又搬来大量泥土和石头，垒起五座高高的坟山，把五兄弟安葬在里面。</div><div>　　这五座山，原名五子山，后来因像5个手指指向苍天，又被称为五指山。</div><p rgb(255,102,0)">如今五指山市</span><br /> 1949年3月琼崖区党委根据党中央关于实行民族区域自治的批示顷白沙毛栈乡（今五指山市毛阳镇）成立了"琼崖少数民族自治区行政委员会"，管辖白沙、保亭、乐东3个县，陈克文任主任，王国兴（黎族）任副主任。</div><div> 1951年1月，海南军政委员会决定进行新区域划分，同时撤销琼崖少数民族自治区行政委员会。1952年4月根据《中华人民共和国民族区域自治实施纲要》的规定，成立海南黎族苗族自治区人民政府筹备委员会，选举王国兴等35人为筹委人委员，通过了成立海南黎族苗族自治区人民政府工作草案。同年6月25日，海南黎族苗族自治区首届各界人民代表会议在乐东县抱由镇举行，会议讨论通过了《海南黎族苗族自治区人民政府组织条例》，选举王国兴等21人为自治区人民政府组织成员，王国兴（黎族）当选为主席，7月1日海南黎族苗族自治区人民政府正式成立。自治区成立初期，直辖白沙、保亭、乐东、琼中、东方5个县。</div><div> 1953年7月自治区首府从抱由镇迁到保亭县冲山镇（今五指山市冲山镇），1954年1月将原属海南行政区的崖县、陵水两县划归自治区管辖，范围扩大到7个县。1955年10月，海南黎族苗族自治区第一届人民代表大会第二次会议在通什镇召开，会议根据1954年颁布的《中华人民共和国宪法》和《中华人民共和国地方各级人民代表大会和各级人民委员会组织法》的规定，宣布将海南黎族苗族自治区改为海南黎族苗族自治州，并将自治区人民政府改为自治州人民委员会。会议选举王国兴（黎族）为州长，林岳川（黎族）为副州长。1958年11月，根据中共广东省委的决定，撤销中共海南黎族苗族自治州州委，州人民委员会迁到海口与海南行政公署合署办公。1961年1月，经中共广东省委批准，恢复自治州原办事机构，并于1962年3月迁回到通什镇办公（今五指山市）。1961年新成立的昌江县划归自治州管辖，这一时期，自治州下辖8个县。1966年下半年，自治州开展"文化大革命"。1984年5月，经国务院批准，崖县撤县成立三亚市（县级），1986年6月，经国务院批准，通什市成立（县级），至此，自治州共管辖7县2市，继续享受民族区域自治政策优惠待遇。1987年12月，根据中共中央、国务院的决定，海南建省办经济特区，同时撤销海南黎族苗族自治州。</div><div>
