Now there were about four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> with him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> went<MH1980> from there<MH8033> to Mizpah<MH4708> of Moab<MH4124>; and he said<MH559> to the king<MH4428> of Moab<MH4124>, “Please<MH4994> let my father<MH1> and my mother<MH517> come<MH3318> <i>and stay</i> with you until<MH5704, 834> I know<MH3045> what<MH4100> God<MH430> will do<MH6213a> for me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>left<MH5117> them with the king<MH4428> of Moab<MH4124>; and they stayed<MH3427> with him all<MH3605> the time<MH3117> that David<MH1732> was in the stronghold<MH4686b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But Gad<MH1410> the prophet<MH5030> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, “Do not stay<MH3427> in the stronghold<MH4686b>; leave<MH1980>, and go<MH935> into the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>.” So David<MH1732> left<MH1980> and went<MH935> into the forest<MH3293a> of Hereth<MH2802>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Saul<MH7586> heard<MH8085> that David<MH1732> and the men<MH376> who<MH834> were with him had been discovered<MH3045>. Now Saul<MH7586> was in Gibeah<MH1390>, sitting<MH3427> under<MH8478> the tamarisk<MH815> tree<MH815> on the height<MH7413> with his spear<MH2595> in his hand<MH3027>, and all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> were standing<MH5324> in front<MH5921> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650> who were standing<MH5324> in front<MH5921> of him, “Hear<MH8085> now<MH4994>, you Benjaminites<MH1145>! Will the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448> really<MH1571> give<MH5414> all<MH3605> of you fields<MH7704> and vineyards<MH3754>? Will he make<MH7760> you all<MH3605> commanders<MH8269> of thousands<MH505> and commanders<MH8269> of hundreds<MH3967>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For all<MH3605> of you have conspired<MH7194> against<MH5921> me so that there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>informs<MH1540, 241> me when my son<MH1121> makes<MH3772> <i>a covenant</i> with the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448>, and there<MH369> is<MH369> none<MH369> of you who cares<MH2470a> about<MH2470a> me or <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>informs<MH1540, 241> me that my son<MH1121> has stirred<MH6965> up<MH6965> my servant<MH5650> against<MH5921> me to lie<MH693> in<MH693> ambush<MH693>, as <i>it is</i> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Doeg<MH1673> the Edomite<MH130>, who<MH1931> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>standing<MH5324> in front<MH5921> of the servants<MH5650> of Saul<MH7586>, responded<MH6030a> and said<MH559>, “I saw<MH7200> the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448> coming<MH935> to Nob<MH5011>, to Ahimelech<MH288> the son<MH1121> of Ahitub<MH285>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And he inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068> for him, gave<MH5414> him provisions<MH6720>, and gave<MH5414> him the sword<MH2719> of Goliath<MH1555> the Philistine<MH6430>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> sent<MH7971> <i>a messenger</i> to summon<MH7121> Ahimelech<MH288> the priest<MH3548>, the son<MH1121> of Ahitub<MH285>, and all<MH3605> his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>, the priests<MH3548> who<MH834> were in Nob<MH5011>; and all<MH3605> of them came<MH935> to the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, “Listen<MH8085> now<MH4994>, son<MH1121> of Ahitub<MH285>.” And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>replied<MH559>, “Here<MH2009> I am, my lord<MH113>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> then said<MH559> to him, “Why<MH4100> have you and the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448> conspired<MH7194> against<MH5921> me, in that you have given<MH5414> him bread<MH3899> and a sword<MH2719>, and have inquired<MH7592> of God<MH430> for him, so that he would rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH413> me by lying<MH693> in<MH693> ambush<MH693> as <i>it is</i> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Ahimelech<MH288> answered<MH6030a> the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, “And who<MH4310> among all<MH3605> your servants<MH5650> is as faithful<MH539> as David<MH1732>, the king’s<MH4428> <i>own</i> son-in-law<MH2860a>, who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>is commander over<MH413> your bodyguard<MH4928>, and is honored<MH3513> in your house<MH1004>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Did I <i>just</i> begin<MH2490c> to inquire<MH7592> of God<MH430> for him today<MH3117>? Far<MH2486> be it from me! Do not let the king<MH4428> impute<MH7760> anything<MH1697> against his servant<MH5650> <i>or</i> against any<MH3605> of the household<MH1004> of my father<MH1>, because<MH3588> your servant<MH5650> knows<MH3045> nothing<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>at all<MH6996b, 1419> of this<MH2088> whole<MH3605> affair<MH1697>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “You shall certainly<MH4191> die<MH4191>, Ahimelech<MH288>, you and all<MH3605> your father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>guards<MH7323> who were attending<MH5324, 5921> him, “Turn<MH5437> around<MH5437> and put<MH4191> the priests<MH3548> of the LORD<MH3068> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, because<MH3588> their hand<MH3027> also<MH1571> is with David<MH1732> and because<MH3588> they knew<MH3045> that he was fleeing<MH1272> and did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>inform<MH1540, 241> me.” But the servants<MH5650> of the king<MH4428> were unwilling<MH3808, 14> to reach<MH7971> out<MH7971> with their hands<MH3027> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>attack<MH6293> the priests<MH3548> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Doeg<MH1673>, “You, turn<MH5437> around<MH5437> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>attack<MH6293> the priests<MH3548>!” And Doeg<MH1673> the Edomite<MH130> turned<MH5437> around<MH5437> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>attacked<MH6293> the priests<MH3548>, and he killed<MH4191> on that day<MH3117> eighty-five<MH8084> men<MH376> who wore<MH5375> the linen<MH906> ephod<MH646>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He also struck<MH5221> Nob<MH5011> the city<MH5892b> of the priests<MH3548> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>, both<MH4480> men<MH376> and women<MH802>, children<MH5768> and infants<MH3243>; <i>he</i> also <i>struck</i> oxen<MH7794>, donkeys<MH2543>, and sheep<MH7716> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But one<MH259> son<MH1121> of Ahimelech<MH288> the son<MH1121> of Ahitub<MH285>, named<MH8034> Abiathar<MH54>, escaped<MH4422> and fled<MH1272> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>to<MH310> David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Abiathar<MH54> informed<MH5046> David<MH1732> that Saul<MH7586> had killed<MH2026> the priests<MH3548> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Abiathar<MH54>, “I knew<MH3045> on that day<MH3117>, when<MH3588> Doeg<MH1673> the Edomite<MH130> was there<MH8033>, that he would certainly<MH5046> tell<MH5046> Saul<MH7586>. I myself<MH595> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>have turned<MH5437> against every<MH3605> person<MH5315> in your father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Stay<MH3427> with me; do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>even<MH3588> though<MH3588> he who<MH834> is seeking<MH1245> my life<MH5315> is seeking<MH1245> your life<MH5315>.
