Please see Supplementing Your Article With Online Material for more details.

Abstract and keywords

All manuscripts must include a structured abstract divided into the following sections, with headings: objective, method, results, and conclusions. The objective should clearly communicate the novel contribution of the manuscript. In the conclusion, please identify at least one specific implication and avoid boilerplate language such as “Implications will be discussed.”

The abstract should be no longer than 250 words and should be followed by five keywords, or brief phrases.

Clinical impact statements

Authors are asked to include a short statement of no more than 100 words, written in conversational English, that summarizes the article's findings and why they are important to practice.

This new article feature allows authors greater control over how their work will be interpreted by a number of audiences (e.g., practitioners, policy makers, news media).

This text should appear in your manuscript, below the abstract, in a section titled "Clinical impact statement."

Please refer to the Guidance for Translational Abstracts and Public Significance Statements page to help you write this text.

Openness and transparency

Authors should state all sources of financial support for the conduct of the research (e.g., This research was supported by Award XX from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute of Child Health and Human Development) in the author note. If the funding source was involved in any other aspects of the research (e.g., study design, analysis, interpretation, writing), then clearly state the role. If the funding source had no other involvement other than financial support, then simply state that the funding source had no other role other than financial support.

Authors should also provide a conflict of interest statement in the author note disclosing any real or potentially perceived conflict(s) of interest, including financial, personal, or other relationships with other organizations or companies that may inappropriately impact or influence the research and interpretation of the findings. If there are no conflicts of interest, this should be clearly stated.

Preregistration of studies and analysis plans can be useful for distinguishing confirmatory and exploratory analyses. We encourage investigators to preregister their studies and analysis plans prior to conducting the research (e.g., Open Science Framework, ClinicalTrials.gov). If any aspect of the study is preregistered, include the registry link in the author note.

Authors who have posted their manuscripts to preprint archives, such as PsyArXiv, prior to submission should include a link to the preprint in the author note.

Participant description and informed consent

The method section of each empirical report must contain a detailed description of the study participants, including (but not limited to) the following:

age

gender

ethnicity

nativity or immigration history

socioeconomic status

clinical diagnoses and comorbidities (as appropriate)

any other relevant demographics (e.g., disability status; sexual orientation)

In both the abstract and in the discussion section of the manuscript, authors should discuss the diversity of their study samples and the generalizability of their findings.

The method section also must include a statement describing how informed consent was obtained from the participants (or their parents/guardians), including for secondary use of data if applicable, and indicate that the study was conducted in compliance with an appropriate Internal Review Board.

Registered reports, null results, and replications

In addition to full-length research papers reporting novel findings, the journal publishes registered reports, negative findings, and replications, regardless of result. Preregistration of replication studies is strongly recommended, but not required.

Registered reports require a two-step review process. The first step is the submission of the registration manuscript. This is a partial manuscript that includes hypotheses, rationale for the study, experimental design, and methods. The partial manuscript will be reviewed for rigor and methodological approach.

If the partial manuscript is accepted, this amounts to provisional acceptance of the full report regardless of the outcome of the study. The full manuscript will be reviewed for adherence to the preregistered design (deviations should be reported in the manuscript).

Data transparency

In order to reduce the likelihood of duplicate or piecemeal publication, authors are required to provide, in their cover letter, a list of published, in press, and under review studies that come from the same dataset as the one in the submitted manuscript, as well as a narrative description of how the submitted manuscript differs from the others.

This narrative description should include how the manuscript differs (or does not) in terms of research question and variables studied.

Authors also are required to submit a masked version of the narrative description that can be provided to reviewers. Please add this as an appendix table on the last page of the submitted manuscript.

Please base your description on the following examples, edited according to your specific data circumstances.

Do not provide the title of the manuscript, authors, or journal in which it was published. Do provide the names of the relevant variables (i.e., substitute the numbers in the examples for actual names, such as depressive symptoms, therapeutic alliance, etc.).

Narrative example: Multiple uses of data collected from the same sample

The data reported in this manuscript have been previously published and/or were collected as part of a larger data collection (at one or more points in time). Findings from the data collection have been reported in separate manuscripts. MS 1 (published) focuses on variables 1, 2, and 3; while MS 2 (in press) focuses on variables 4, 5, and 6. MS 3 (the current manuscript) focuses on variables 8, 9, and 15. MS 4 (soon to be submitted) will focus on variables 10, 12, and 14.

Narrative example: Publicly available dataset

The data reported in this manuscript were obtained from publicly available data, [name of project, along with website link to project description]. The variables and relationships examined in the present article have not been examined in any previous or current articles, or to the best of our knowledge in any papers that will be under review soon. [Alternatively, clarify any overlap of variables, as done in the narrative example above].

Upon submission of the manuscript, authors will be required to attest to the provision of the required information described above.

Finally, upon acceptance of a manuscript, authors will be required to provide, as part of the author note, a list of related published papers that come from the same dataset, unless such papers are clearly described and referenced in the manuscript (specifically noting that findings come from the same dataset).

Open science badges

Articles are eligible for open science badges recognizing publicly available data, materials, and/or preregistration plans and analyses. While we recognize that trauma potentially affects all people, we also recognize that socio-historical and cultural factors mediate expressions of trauma response. Therefore, Psychological Trauma encourages submissions that include diverse populations, samples, and viewpoints. We especially encourage authors from underrepresented groups and those outside the U.S.

Possible trauma-related topics include:

psychological effects of trauma

trauma treatments

health services

delivery of trauma services to diverse populations

assessment and diagnosis of trauma

culturally sensitive measure of trauma

pathophysiology of response to trauma

neuroimaging studies

epidemiological and risk factor studies

trauma prevention, intervention, and treatment that is culturally and linguistically sensitive

The journal publishes quantitative and qualitative studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. This journal offers an editorial fellowship program for early-career psychologists from historically excluded communities. Of the two available fellow positions, one editorial fellow position is specifically designated for a person of color.

The journal has a high percentage of international authors.

Reviewer mentorship program

This journal encourages reviewers to submit co-reviews with their students and trainees. The journal likewise offers a formal reviewer mentorship program where graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from historically excluded groups are matched with a senior reviewer to produce an integrated review.

Development editor assistance program

Development editor programs offer support to experts who have a promising idea for advancing the field of psychology but have little experience with academic writing and publishing. A development editor provides a structured process, feedback, and editorial guidance for creating a manuscript to be submitted to a given journal. This journal offers a formal development editor assistance program.

Education sessions

This journal offers education sessions for aspiring authors and offers assistance with English-language issues.

Other EDI offerings

ORCID reviewer recognition

Open Research and Contributor ID (ORCID) Reviewer Recognition provides a visible and verifiable way for journals to publicly credit reviewers without compromising the confidentiality of the peer review process. Research has shown that masked peer review can help reduce implicit bias against traditionally female names or early-career scientists with smaller publication records (Budden et al., 2008; Darling, 2015).

Author and Editor Spotlights

Psychological Trauma and COVID-19

The July 2020 issue of Psychological Trauma features two special sections:

Differential impacts of COVID-19 on communities of color

International perspectives on COVID-19

COVID-19: Insights on the pandemic’s traumatic effects and global implications
A special supplemental issue of Psychological Trauma (August 2020)

From APA Journals Article Spotlight®

Irritability in PTSD: Clinical correlates and subgroups

Impact of multiple levels of racism on polysubstance use

Childhood neglect and posttraumatic stress may negatively affect fertility

Posttraumatic outcomes following a campus shooting

 window.fbAsyncInit = function () { FB.init({ appId: 255440604529709, xfbml: true, version: 'v4.0' });
