This theme is woven throughout the patriarchal accounts, where God's providential care and protection are evident as He guides and sustains His chosen ones. Abraham's Journey The journey of Abraham, originally Abram, into Canaan marks a significant moment where God’s role as Preserver is prominently displayed. In <a href="/genesis/12.htm">Genesis 12:1-3</a> , God calls Abram to leave his homeland and promises to make him a great nation, blessing him and making his name great. As Abram obeys and travels to Canaan, God’s preservation is evident in His promises and actions. Despite the challenges, including a famine that drives Abram to Egypt (<a href="/genesis/12-10.htm">Genesis 12:10</a>), God protects him and his family, ensuring their return to Canaan with increased wealth and status (<a href="/genesis/13.htm">Genesis 13:1-2</a>). Isaac's Protection Isaac, the son of Abraham, also experiences God’s preserving hand in Canaan. In <a href="/bsb/genesis/26.htm">Genesis 26</a>, during another famine, God instructs Isaac not to go to Egypt but to stay in the land He will show him, reiterating the covenant made with Abraham (<a href="/genesis/26-2.htm">Genesis 26:2-5</a>). God’s preservation is evident as He blesses Isaac with prosperity, even amidst conflict with the Philistines over water rights (<a href="/genesis/26-12.htm">Genesis 26:12-22</a>). God’s promise to be with Isaac and bless him underscores His role as Preserver. Jacob's Preservation Jacob, later named Israel, encounters God’s preserving presence throughout his life. In <a href="/genesis/28-13.htm">Genesis 28:13-15</a> , during his flight from Esau, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven and receives God’s assurance: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go.” This promise of preservation is fulfilled as Jacob prospers in Haran and eventually returns to Canaan with his family and wealth (<a href="/genesis/31-3.htm">Genesis 31:3, 32</a>:9-12). Joseph's Story The account of Joseph further illustrates God’s preserving power. Although Joseph is sold into slavery and taken to Egypt, God’s providence is evident as He uses Joseph’s circumstances to preserve the family of Israel during a severe famine. In <a href="/genesis/45-7.htm">Genesis 45:7</a> , Joseph reveals to his brothers, “God sent me before you to preserve you as a remnant on the earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.” Through Joseph, God ensures the survival and eventual flourishing of Jacob’s descendants. God’s Covenant and Preservation Throughout the patriarchal narratives, God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants serves as the foundation for His preserving actions. The covenant promises land, descendants, and blessing, and God’s faithfulness to these promises is demonstrated in His protection and provision. In <a href="/genesis/17-7.htm">Genesis 17:7-8</a> , God declares, “I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you... And to you and your descendants I will give the land of Canaan.” Conclusion In the land of Canaan, God’s role as Preserver is a testament to His faithfulness and sovereignty.
