Will you not tell<MH5046> me?&#8221; So Amnon<MH550> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;I am in love<MH157> with Tamar<MH8559>, the sister<MH269> of my brother<MH251> Absalom<MH53>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Jonadab<MH3082> then said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Lie<MH7901> down<MH7901> on your bed<MH4904> and pretend<MH2470a> to<MH2470a> be<MH2470a> ill<MH2470a>; when your father<MH1> comes<MH935> to see<MH7200> you, say<MH559> to him, &#8216;Please<MH4994> have my sister<MH269> Tamar<MH8559> come<MH935> and give me food<MH3899> to eat<MH1262>, and have her prepare<MH6213a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>food<MH1279> in my sight<MH5869>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> I may see<MH7200> <i>it</i> and eat<MH398> from her hand<MH3027>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Amnon<MH550> lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> and pretended<MH2470a> to<MH2470a> be<MH2470a> ill<MH2470a>; when the king<MH4428> came<MH935> to see<MH7200> him, Amnon<MH550> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> have my sister<MH269> Tamar<MH8559> come<MH935> and make<MH3823b> me a couple<MH8147> of pastries<MH3834> in my sight<MH5869>, so that I may eat<MH1262> from her hand<MH3027>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> <i>a messenger</i> to the house<MH1004> for Tamar<MH8559>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> now<MH4994> to your brother<MH251> Amnon&#8217;s<MH550> house<MH1004>, and prepare<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>food<MH1279> for him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Tamar<MH8559> went<MH1980> to her brother<MH251> Amnon&#8217;s<MH550> house<MH1004>, and he was lying<MH7901> <i>in bed.</i> And she took<MH3947> dough<MH1217>, kneaded<MH3888> <i>it,</i> made<MH3823b> pastries<MH3823b> in his sight<MH5869>, and baked<MH1310> the pastries<MH3834>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then she took<MH3947> the tray<MH4958> and served<MH3332> <i>them</i> to him, but he refused<MH3985> to eat<MH398>. And Amnon<MH550> said<MH559>, &#8220;Have everyone<MH3605, 376> leave<MH3318> me.&#8221; So everyone<MH3605, 376> left<MH3318> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Amnon<MH550> said<MH559> to Tamar<MH8559>, &#8220;Bring<MH935> the food<MH1279> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>bedroom<MH2315>, so that I may eat<MH1262> from your hand<MH3027>.&#8221; So Tamar<MH8559> took<MH3947> the pastries<MH3834> which<MH834> she had made<MH6213a> and brought<MH935> them into the bedroom<MH2315> to her brother<MH251> Amnon<MH550>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When she brought<MH5066> <i>them</i> to him to eat<MH398>, he took<MH2388> hold<MH2388> of her and said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Come<MH935>, sleep<MH7901> with me, my sister<MH269>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;No<MH408>, my brother<MH251>, do not violate<MH6031a> me, for such<MH3651> a<MH3651> thing<MH3651> is not done<MH6213a> in Israel<MH3478>; do not do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> disgraceful<MH5039> sin<MH5039>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>As for me, where<MH575> could I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>get<MH1980> rid<MH1980> of my shame<MH2781>? And as for you, you will be like one<MH259> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>fools<MH5036> in Israel<MH3478>. Now<MH6258> then, please<MH4994> speak<MH1696> to the king<MH4428>, for he will not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>withhold<MH4513> me from you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>However, he would<MH14> not listen<MH8085> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>her; since he was stronger<MH2388> than<MH4480> she, he violated<MH6031a> her and slept<MH7901> with her. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Amnon<MH550> hated<MH8130> her with a very<MH3966> great<MH1419> hatred<MH8135>; indeed<MH3588>, the hatred<MH8135> with which<MH834> he hated<MH8130> her was greater<MH1419> than<MH4480> the love<MH160> with which<MH834> he had loved<MH157> her. And Amnon<MH550> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Get<MH6965> up<MH6965>, go<MH1980> <i>away!</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;No<MH408>, because<MH182> this<MH2088> wrong<MH7463a> in sending<MH7971> me away<MH7971> is greater<MH1419> than<MH4480> the other<MH312> that you have done<MH6213a> to me!&#8221; Yet he would<MH14> not listen<MH8085> to her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then he called<MH7121> his young<MH5288> man<MH5288> who attended<MH8334> him and said<MH559>, &#8220;Now<MH4994> throw<MH7971> this<MH2088> woman<MH2088> out<MH7971> of my <i>presence,</i> and lock<MH5274a> the door<MH1817> behind<MH310> her!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now she had on a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>long-sleeved<MH6446> garment<MH3801>; for this<MH3651> is<MH3651> how<MH3651> the virgin<MH1330> daughters<MH1323> of the king<MH4428> dressed<MH3847> themselves in robes<MH4598>. Then his attendant<MH8334> took<MH3318> her out<MH3318> and locked<MH5274a> the door<MH1817> behind<MH310> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Tamar<MH8559> took<MH3947> ashes<MH665> <i>and put them</i> on her head<MH7218>, and tore<MH7167> her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>long-sleeved<MH6446> garment<MH3801> which<MH834> <i>was</i> on her; and she put<MH7760> her hand<MH3027> on her head<MH7218> and went<MH1980> <i>on her way,</i> crying<MH2199> out<MH2199> as she went<MH1980>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Absalom<MH53> her brother<MH251> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Has Amnon<MH550> your brother<MH251> been<MH1961> with you? But now<MH6258> keep<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b>, my sister<MH269>, he is your brother<MH251>; do not take<MH7896> this<MH2088> matter<MH1697> to heart<MH3820>.&#8221; So Tamar<MH8559> remained<MH3427> and was<MH8074> isolated<MH8074> in her brother<MH251> Absalom&#8217;s<MH53> house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now when King<MH4428> David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> about all<MH3605> these<MH428> matters<MH1697>, he became<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But Absalom<MH53> did not speak<MH1696> with Amnon<MH550> either<MH5704> good<MH2896a> or<MH4480> bad<MH7451a>; for Absalom<MH53> hated<MH8130> Amnon<MH550> because<MH5921, 1697, 834> he had violated<MH6031a> his sister<MH269> Tamar<MH8559>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> after two full<MH3117> years<MH8141> that Absalom<MH53> had<MH1961> sheepshearers<MH1494> in Baal-hazor<MH1178>, which<MH834> is near<MH5973> Ephraim<MH669>, and Absalom<MH53> invited<MH7121> all<MH3605> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> <i>to celebrate.</i> <p class="hdg">Absalom Avenges Tamar</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Absalom<MH53> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009> now<MH4994>, your servant<MH5650> has sheepshearers<MH1494>; may the king<MH4428> and his servants<MH5650> please<MH4994> go<MH1980> with your servant<MH5650>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Absalom<MH53>, &#8220;No<MH408>, my son<MH1121>, we should not all<MH3605> go<MH1980>, so that we will not be<MH3513> a<MH3513> burden<MH3513> to you.&#8221; Though he urged<MH6555> him, he would<MH14> not go<MH1980>; but he blessed<MH1288> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then Absalom<MH53> said<MH559>, &#8220;If not, please<MH4994> have my brother<MH251> Amnon<MH550> go<MH1980> with us.&#8221; But the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Why<MH4100> should he go<MH1980> with you?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Nevertheless Absalom<MH53> urged<MH6555> him, so he let<MH7971> Amnon<MH550> and all<MH3605> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> go<MH7971> with him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then Absalom<MH53> commanded<MH6680> his servants<MH5288>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;See<MH7200> now<MH4994>, when Amnon&#8217;s<MH550> heart<MH3820> is cheerful<MH2895> with wine<MH3196>, and I say<MH559> to you, &#8216;Strike<MH5221> Amnon<MH550>,&#8217; then put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. Do not fear<MH3372a>; have I not commanded<MH6680> you myself<MH595>? Be<MH2388> courageous<MH2388> and be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>valiant<MH1121, 2428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And the servants<MH5288> of Absalom<MH53> did<MH6213a> to Amnon<MH550> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> Absalom<MH53> had commanded<MH6680>. Then all<MH3605> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and each<MH376> mounted<MH7392> his mule<MH6505> and fled<MH5127>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Now it was while they were on the way<MH1870> that the report<MH8052> came<MH935> to David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Absalom<MH53> has struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> all<MH3605> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121>, and not one<MH259> of them is left<MH3498>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> stood<MH6965> up<MH6965>, tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH899b>, and lay<MH7901> on the ground<MH776>; and all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> were standing<MH5324> by with clothes<MH899b> torn<MH7167>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And Jonadab<MH3082>, the son<MH1121> of Shimeah<MH8093>, David&#8217;s<MH1732> brother<MH251>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>responded<MH6030a, 559>, &#8220;Let my lord<MH113> not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>assume<MH559> that they have put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> all<MH3605> the young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121>, for only<MH905> Amnon<MH550> is dead<MH4191>; because<MH3588> this has been<MH1961> set<MH7760> up<MH7760> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>intent<MH6310> of Absalom<MH53> since<MH4480> the day<MH3117> that he violated<MH6031a> his sister<MH269> Tamar<MH8559>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So now<MH6258>, may my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> not take<MH7760> the report<MH1697> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>heart<MH3820>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>claiming<MH559>, &#8216;all<MH3605> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> are dead<MH4191>&#8217;; but only<MH905> Amnon<MH550> is dead<MH4191>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Now Absalom<MH53> had fled<MH1272>. And the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> who was the watchman<MH6822> raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and looked<MH7200>, and behold<MH2009>, many<MH7227a> people<MH5971a> were coming<MH1980> from the road<MH1870> behind<MH310> him by the side<MH6654> of the mountain<MH2022>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Jonadab<MH3082> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> have come<MH935>; so<MH3651> it has happened<MH1961> according to your servant&#8217;s<MH5650> word<MH1697>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>As soon as he had finished<MH3615> speaking<MH1696>, behold<MH2009>, the king&#8217;s<MH4428> sons<MH1121> came<MH935> and raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>; and the king<MH4428> and all<MH3605> his servants<MH5650> also<MH1571> wept<MH1058> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>very<MH3966> profusely<MH1419, 1065>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/13-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Now Absalom<MH53> had fled<MH1272> and gone<MH1980> to Talmai<MH8526> the son<MH1121> of Ammihud<MH5989>, the king<MH4428> of Geshur<MH1650>.
