Why were these books so popular, how were they used, do they constitute a clearly defined genre? It is already clear that ‘Tracts of Action’ differ from other book genres in that they are radically geared towards implementation. In fact, you would have to try out each of the recipes presented in this book to measure the distance between written instructions and their implementation in the physical world. Or is there a way to simply absorb the knowledge encoded in how-to books?
