and they asked<MH7592> each<MH376> other<MH7453> about their welfare<MH7965>, and went<MH935> into the tent<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Moses<MH4872> told<MH5608> his father-in-law<MH2860b> everything<MH3605> that the LORD<MH3068> had done<MH6213a> to Pharaoh<MH6547> and to the Egyptians<MH4714> for<MH5921> Israel’s<MH3478> sake<MH5921, 182>, all<MH3605> the hardship<MH8513> that had confronted<MH4672> them on the journey<MH1870>, and <i>how</i> the LORD<MH3068> had rescued<MH5337> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Jethro<MH3503> rejoiced<MH2302b> over<MH5921> all<MH3605> the goodness<MH2899b> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had done<MH6213a> for Israel<MH3478>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in rescuing<MH5337> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>them from the hand<MH3027> of the Egyptians<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So Jethro<MH3503> said<MH559>, “Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068> who<MH834> rescued<MH5337> you from the hand<MH3027> of the Egyptians<MH4714> and from the hand<MH3027> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, <i>and</i> who<MH834> rescued<MH5337> the people<MH5971a> from under<MH8478> the hand<MH3027> of the Egyptians<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> I know<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> is greater<MH1419> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> the gods<MH430>; indeed<MH3588>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>it was proven<MH1697> when<MH834> they acted<MH2102> insolently<MH2102> against<MH5921> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>the people.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Jethro<MH3503>, Moses’<MH4872> father-in-law<MH2860b>, took<MH3947> a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> and sacrifices<MH2077> for God<MH430>, and Aaron<MH175> came<MH935> with all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478> to eat<MH398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>a meal<MH3899> with Moses’<MH4872> father-in-law<MH2860b> before<MH6440> God<MH430>. <p class="hdg">Jethro Counsels Moses</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> the next<MH4283> day<MH4283>, that Moses<MH4872> sat<MH3427> to judge<MH8199> the people<MH5971a>, and the people<MH5971a> stood<MH5975> before<MH5921> Moses<MH4872> from the morning<MH1242> until<MH5704> the evening<MH6153>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now when Moses’<MH4872> father-in-law<MH2860b> saw<MH7200> all<MH3605> that he was doing<MH6213a> for the people<MH5971a>, he said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> that you are doing<MH6213a> for the people<MH5971a>? Why<MH4069> do you alone<MH905> sit<MH3427> <i>as judge</i> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> stand<MH5324> before<MH5921> you from morning<MH1242> until<MH5704> evening<MH6153>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to his father-in-law<MH2860b>, “Because<MH3588> the people<MH5971a> come<MH935> to me to inquire<MH1875> of God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When<MH3588> they have<MH1961> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>dispute<MH1697>, it comes<MH935> to me, and I judge<MH8199> between<MH996> someone<MH376> and his neighbor<MH7453> and make<MH3045> known<MH3045> the statutes<MH2706> of God<MH430> and His laws<MH8451>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Moses’<MH4872> father-in-law<MH2860b> then said<MH559> to him, “The thing<MH1697> that you are doing<MH6213a> is not good<MH2896a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>You will surely<MH5034b> wear<MH5034b> out<MH5034b>, both<MH1571> yourself<MH859> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>these<MH2088> people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are with you, because<MH3588> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>task<MH1697> is too<MH4480> heavy<MH3515> for you; you cannot<MH3201, 3808> do<MH6213a> it alone<MH905>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> listen<MH8085> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>me: I will give<MH3289> you counsel<MH3289>, and God<MH430> be with you. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>You be the people’s<MH5971a> representative before<MH4136> God<MH430>, and you bring<MH935> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>disputes<MH1697> to God<MH430>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>then admonish<MH2094b> them about<MH2094b> the statutes<MH2706> and the laws<MH8451>, and make<MH3045> known<MH3045> to them the way<MH1870> in which they are to walk<MH1980> and the work<MH4639> they are to do<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Furthermore, you shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>select<MH2372> out of all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> able<MH2428> men<MH376> who fear<MH3372a> God<MH430>, men<MH376> of truth<MH571>, those who hate<MH8130> dishonest<MH1215> gain<MH1215>; and you shall place<MH7760> <i>these</i> over<MH5921> them <i>as</i> leaders<MH8269> of thousands<MH505>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>of hundreds<MH3967>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>of fifties<MH2572>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>of tens<MH6235>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Let them judge<MH8199> the people<MH5971a> at all<MH3605> times<MH6256>; and let it be that they will bring<MH935> to you every<MH3605> major<MH1419> matter<MH1697>, but they will judge<MH8199> every<MH3605> minor<MH6996b> matter<MH1697> themselves.
