Is the gleaning<MH5955> <i>of the grapes</i> of Ephraim<MH669> not better<MH2896a> than<MH4480> the vintage<MH1210> of Abiezer<MH44>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>God<MH430> has handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to you the leaders<MH8269> of Midian<MH4080>, Oreb<MH6159> and Zeeb<MH2062>; and what<MH4100> was<MH3201> I able<MH3201> to do<MH6213a> in comparison with you?&#8221; Then<MH227> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>anger<MH7307> toward<MH4480, 5921> him subsided<MH7503> when he said<MH1696> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>that. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> and the three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> who<MH834> were with him came<MH935> to the Jordan<MH3383> <i>and</i> crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a>, exhausted<MH5889> yet <i>still</i> pursuing<MH7291>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to the men<MH376> of Succoth<MH5523>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> give<MH5414> loaves<MH3603> of bread<MH3899> to the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>following<MH7272> me, for they are exhausted<MH5889>, and I am pursuing<MH7291, 310> Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, the kings<MH4428> of Midian<MH4080>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But the leaders<MH8269> of Succoth<MH5523> said<MH559>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Are the hands<MH3709> of Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759> already<MH6258> in your hand<MH3027>, that we should give<MH5414> bread<MH3899> to your army<MH6635>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So Gideon<MH1439> said<MH559>, &#8220;For this<MH3651> <i>answer,</i> when the LORD<MH3068> has handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to me Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>thrash<MH1758> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>bodies<MH1320> with the thorns<MH6975> of the wilderness<MH4057b> and with briers<MH1303>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from there<MH8033> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Penuel<MH6439> and spoke<MH1696> similarly<MH2088> to them; and the men<MH376> of Penuel<MH6439> answered<MH6030a> him just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the men<MH376> of Succoth<MH5523> had answered<MH6030a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> also<MH1571> to the men<MH376> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Penuel<MH6439>, &#8220;When I return<MH7725> safely<MH7965>, I will tear<MH5422> down<MH5422> this<MH2088> tower<MH4026>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759> were in Karkor<MH7174a>, and their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>armies<MH4264> with them, about fifteen<MH2568, 6240> thousand<MH505> men, all<MH3605> who were left<MH3498> of the entire<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>army<MH4264> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>people<MH1121> of the east<MH6924a>; for the fallen<MH5307> were 120,000<MH3967, 6242, 505> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>swordsmen<MH376, 8025, 2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Gideon<MH1439> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> by the way<MH1870> of those who lived<MH7931> in tents<MH168> to the east<MH6924a> of Nobah<MH5025> and Jogbehah<MH3011>, and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>attacked<MH5221> the camp<MH4264> when the camp<MH4264> was unsuspecting<MH983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759> fled<MH5127>, he pursued<MH7291, 310> them and captured<MH3920> the two<MH8147> kings<MH4428> of Midian<MH4080>, Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, and routed<MH2729> the entire<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>army<MH4264>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> the son<MH1121> of Joash<MH3060> returned<MH7725> from the battle<MH4421> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>by the ascent<MH4608> of Heres<MH2776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And he captured<MH3920> a youth<MH5288> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>Succoth<MH5523> and questioned<MH7592> him. Then <i>the youth</i> wrote<MH3789> down<MH3789> for him the leaders<MH8269> of Succoth<MH5523> and its elders<MH2205>, seventy-seven<MH7657> men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And he came<MH935> to the men<MH376> of Succoth<MH5523> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009> Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, about whom<MH834> you taunted<MH2778a> me, saying<MH559>, &#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Are the hands<MH3709> of Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759> already<MH6258> in your hand<MH3027>, that we should give<MH5414> bread<MH3899> to your men<MH376> who are weary<MH3287>?&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> the elders<MH2205> of the city<MH5892b>, and thorns<MH6975> of the wilderness<MH4057b> and briers<MH1303>, and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>disciplined<MH3045> the men<MH376> of Succoth<MH5523> with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And he tore<MH5422> down<MH5422> the tower<MH4026> of Penuel<MH6439> and killed<MH2026> the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, &#8220;Where<MH375> <i>were</i> the men<MH376> whom<MH834> you killed<MH2026> at Tabor<MH8396>?&#8221; But they said<MH559>, &#8220;You and they were alike<MH3644>, each one<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>resembling<MH8389> the son<MH1121> of a king<MH4428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, &#8220;They <i>were</i> my brothers<MH251>, the sons<MH1121> of my mother<MH517>. <i>As</i> the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, if<MH3863> only<MH3863> you had let them live<MH2421a>, I would not kill<MH2026> you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to Jether<MH3500> his firstborn<MH1060>, &#8220;Rise<MH6965>, kill<MH2026> them.&#8221; But the youth<MH5288> did not draw<MH8025> his sword<MH2719>, for he was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, because<MH3588> he was still<MH5750> a youth<MH5288>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759> said<MH559>, &#8220;Rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> yourself<MH859>, and attack<MH6293> us; for as the man<MH376>, so is his strength<MH1369>.&#8221; So Gideon<MH1439> arose<MH6965> and killed<MH2026> Zebah<MH2078> and Zalmunna<MH6759>, and took<MH3947> the crescent<MH7720> amulets<MH7720> which<MH834> were on their camels&#8217;<MH1581> necks<MH6677>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to Gideon<MH1439>, &#8220;Rule<MH4910> over us, both<MH1571> you and your son<MH1121>, your son&#8217;s<MH1121> son<MH1121> as<MH1571> well<MH1571>, for you have saved<MH3467> us from the hand<MH3027> of Midian<MH4080>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But Gideon<MH1439> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;I will not rule<MH4910> over you, nor<MH3808> shall my son<MH1121> rule<MH4910> over you; the LORD<MH3068> shall rule<MH4910> over you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Yet Gideon<MH1439> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;I would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>request<MH7596, 7592> of you, that each<MH376> of you give<MH5414> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>an earring<MH5141> from his plunder<MH7998>.&#8221; (For they had gold<MH2091> earrings<MH5141>, because<MH3588> they were Ishmaelites<MH3459>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, &#8220;We will certainly<MH5414> give<MH5414> <i>them to you.</i>&#8221; So they spread<MH6566> out<MH6566> a garment<MH8071>, and every<MH376> one<MH376> of them tossed<MH7993> an earring<MH5141> there<MH8033> from his plunder<MH7998>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>The weight<MH4948> of the gold<MH2091> earrings<MH5141> that he requested<MH7592> was 1,700<MH505, 7651, 3967> <i>shekels</i> of gold<MH2091>, apart<MH905> from the crescent<MH7720> amulets<MH7720>, the ear<MH5188> pendants<MH5188>, and the purple<MH713> robes<MH899b> which<MH7945> <i>were</i> on the kings<MH4428> of Midian<MH4080>, and apart<MH905> from the neck<MH6060> chains<MH6060> that <i>were</i> on their camels&#8217;<MH1581> necks<MH6677>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Gideon<MH1439> made<MH6213a> it into an ephod<MH646>, and placed<MH3322> it in his city<MH5892b>, Ophrah<MH6084>; but all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>committed infidelity<MH2181> with it there<MH8033>, and it became<MH1961> a snare<MH4170> to Gideon<MH1439> and his household<MH1004>. <p class="hdg">Forty Years of Peace</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So Midian<MH4080> was subdued<MH3665> before<MH6440> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and they did not lift<MH5375> up<MH5375> their heads<MH7218> anymore<MH3254>.
