the priests<MH3548> and the Levites<MH3881> brought<MH5927> them up<MH5927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> and all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712> of Israel<MH3478>, who were gathered<MH3259> together<MH3259> to him, were with him before<MH6440> the ark<MH727>, sacrificing<MH2076> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>so many<MH7230> sheep<MH6629> and oxen<MH1241> that they could not be counted<MH5608> or numbered<MH4487>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the priests<MH3548> brought<MH935> the ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068> to its place<MH4725>, into the inner<MH1687> sanctuary<MH1687> of the house<MH1004>, to the Most<MH6944> Holy<MH6944> Place<MH6944>, under<MH8478> the wings<MH3671> of the cherubim<MH3742>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>For the cherubim<MH3742> spread<MH6566> <i>their</i> wings<MH3671> over<MH413> the place<MH4725> of the ark<MH727>, and the cherubim<MH3742> made<MH5526a> a<MH5526a> covering<MH5526a> over<MH5921> the ark<MH727> and its carrying<MH905> poles<MH905> from above<MH4480, 4605>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But the poles<MH905> were so long<MH748> that the ends<MH7218> of the poles<MH905> could be seen<MH7200> from the holy<MH6944> place in front<MH5921, 6440> of the inner<MH1687> sanctuary<MH1687>, but they could not be seen<MH7200> outside<MH2351>; they are there<MH8033> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>There<MH369> was<MH369> nothing<MH369> in the ark<MH727> except<MH7534b> the two<MH8147> tablets<MH3871> of stone<MH68> which<MH834> Moses<MH4872> put<MH5117> there<MH8033> at Horeb<MH2722>, where<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> made<MH3772> <i>a covenant</i> with the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, when they came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And it happened<MH1961> that when the priests<MH3548> came<MH3318> from the holy<MH6944> place, the cloud<MH6051> filled<MH4390> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>so that the priests<MH3548> could<MH3201> not stand<MH5975> to minister<MH8334> because<MH4480, 6440> of the cloud<MH6051>, for the glory<MH3519b> of the LORD<MH3068> filled<MH4390> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Solomon Addresses the People</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then<MH227> Solomon<MH8010> said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“The LORD<MH3068> has said<MH559> that He would dwell<MH7931> in the thick<MH6205> darkness<MH6205>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“I have truly<MH1129> built<MH1129> You a lofty<MH2073> house<MH1004>, <t><p class="indent1">A place<MH4349> for Your dwelling<MH3427> forever<MH5769>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>turned<MH5437, 6440> around<MH5437> and blessed<MH1288> all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> of Israel<MH3478>, while all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> of Israel<MH3478> was standing<MH5975>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> spoke<MH1696> with His mouth<MH6310> to my father<MH1> David<MH1732>, and fulfilled<MH4390> <i>it</i> with His hands<MH3027>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>‘Since<MH4480> the day<MH3117> that I brought<MH3318> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478> from Egypt<MH4714>, I did not choose<MH977> a city<MH5892b> out of all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> <i>in which</i> to build<MH1129> a house<MH1004> so that My name<MH8034> would be there<MH8033>, but I chose<MH977> David<MH1732> to be over<MH5921> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now it was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>in the heart<MH3824> of my father<MH1> David<MH1732> to build<MH1129> a house<MH1004> for the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to my father<MH1> David<MH1732>, ‘Because<MH3282, 834> it was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>in your heart<MH3824> to build<MH1129> a house<MH1004> for My name<MH8034>, you did<MH2895> well<MH2895> that it was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>in your heart<MH3824>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Nevertheless<MH7534b> you shall not build<MH1129> the house<MH1004>, but your son<MH1121> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>will be born<MH3318, 2504> to you, he will build<MH1129> the house<MH1004> for My name<MH8034>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now the LORD<MH3068> has fulfilled<MH6965> His word<MH1697> which<MH834> He spoke<MH1696>; for I have risen<MH6965> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> my father<MH1> David<MH1732> and I sit<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of Israel<MH3478>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>promised<MH1696>, and I have built<MH1129> the house<MH1004> for the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And there<MH8033> I have set<MH7760> a place<MH4725> for the ark<MH727>, in which<MH834> is the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068>, which<MH834> He made<MH3772> with our fathers<MH1> when He brought<MH3318> them out<MH3318> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>.” <p class="hdg">The Prayer of Dedication</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then Solomon<MH8010> stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the altar<MH4196> of the LORD<MH3068> in the presence<MH5048> of all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> of Israel<MH3478>, and he spread<MH6566> out<MH6566> his hands<MH3709> toward heaven<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> God<MH430> like<MH3644> You in heaven<MH8064> above<MH4480, 4605> or on earth<MH776> beneath<MH4480, 8478>, keeping<MH8104> the covenant<MH1285> and <i>showing</i> faithfulness<MH2617a> to Your servants<MH5650> who walk<MH1980> before<MH6440> You with all<MH3605> their heart<MH3820>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>You who<MH834> have kept<MH8104> with Your servant<MH5650>, my father<MH1> David<MH1732>, that which<MH834> You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>promised<MH1696> him; You have spoken<MH1696> with Your mouth<MH6310> and have fulfilled<MH4390> it with Your hand<MH3027>, as <i>it is</i> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, keep<MH8104> with Your servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> my father<MH1> that which<MH834> You have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>promised<MH1696> him, saying<MH559>, ‘<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>You shall not be deprived<MH3772> of a man<MH376> to sit<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of Israel<MH3478>, if<MH518> only<MH7534b> your sons<MH1121> are<MH8104> careful<MH8104> about their way<MH1870>, to walk<MH1980> before<MH6440> Me as you have walked<MH1980>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, let Your words<MH1697>, please<MH4994>, be confirmed<MH539>, which<MH834> You have spoken<MH1696> to Your servant<MH5650>, my father<MH1> David<MH1732>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“But will God<MH430> indeed<MH552> dwell<MH3427> on the earth<MH776>? Behold<MH2009>, heaven<MH8064> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>highest<MH8064> heaven<MH8064> cannot<MH3808> contain<MH3557> You, how<MH637> much<MH637, 3588> less<MH637> this<MH2088> house<MH1004> which<MH834> I have built<MH1129>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Nevertheless, turn<MH6437> Your attention<MH6437> to the prayer<MH8605> of Your servant<MH5650> and to his plea<MH8467>, LORD<MH3068>, my God<MH430>, to listen<MH8085> to the cry<MH7440> and to the prayer<MH8605> which<MH834> Your servant<MH5650> prays<MH6419> before<MH6440> You today<MH3117>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>so that Your eyes<MH5869> may be open<MH6605a> toward<MH413> this<MH2088> house<MH1004> night<MH3915> and day<MH3117>, toward<MH413> the place<MH4725> of which<MH834> You have said<MH559>, ‘My name<MH8034> shall be there<MH8033>,’ to listen<MH8085> to the prayer<MH8605> which<MH834> Your servant<MH5650> will pray<MH6419> toward<MH413> this<MH2088> place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And listen<MH8085> to the plea<MH8467> of Your servant<MH5650> and of Your people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, when<MH834> they pray<MH6419> toward<MH413> this<MH2088> place<MH4725>; hear<MH8085> in heaven<MH8064> Your dwelling<MH3427> place<MH4725>; hear<MH8085> and forgive<MH5545>! <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“If<MH834> a person<MH376> sins<MH2398> against his neighbor<MH7453> and is compelled<MH5377> to take<MH422> an<MH422> oath<MH423> <i>of innocence,</i> and he comes<MH935> <i>and</i> takes<MH422> an<MH422> oath<MH422> before<MH6440> Your altar<MH4196> in this<MH2088> house<MH1004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>then hear<MH8085> in heaven<MH8064> and act<MH6213a> and judge<MH8199> Your servants<MH5650>, condemning<MH7561> the wicked<MH7563> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>bringing<MH5414> his way<MH1870> on his own head<MH7218>, and acquitting<MH6663> the righteous<MH6662> by giving<MH5414> him according to his righteousness<MH6666>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>“When Your people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478> are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>defeated<MH5062> before<MH6440> an enemy<MH340> because<MH834> they have sinned<MH2398> against You, if they turn<MH7725> to You again<MH7725> and confess<MH3034> Your name<MH8034> and pray<MH6419> and implore<MH2603a> Your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>favor<MH2603a> in this<MH2088> house<MH1004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>then hear<MH8085> in heaven<MH8064>, and forgive<MH5545> the sin<MH2403b> of Your people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, and bring<MH7725> them back<MH7725> to the land<MH127> which<MH834> You gave<MH5414> their fathers<MH1>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>“When the heavens<MH8064> are shut<MH6113> up<MH6113> and there is no<MH3808> rain<MH4306> because<MH3588> they have sinned<MH2398> against You, and they pray<MH6419> toward<MH413> this<MH2088> place<MH4725> and praise<MH3034> Your name<MH8034>, and turn<MH7725> from their sin<MH2403b> when<MH3588> You afflict<MH6031a> them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>then hear<MH8085> in heaven<MH8064> and forgive<MH5545> the sin<MH2403b> of Your servants<MH5650> and Your people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>; indeed<MH3588>, teach<MH3384> them the good<MH2896a> way<MH1870> in which<MH834> they are to walk<MH1980>. And provide<MH5414> rain<MH4306> on Your land<MH776>, which<MH834> You have given<MH5414> to Your people<MH5971a> as an inheritance<MH5159>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>“If<MH3588> there is a famine<MH7458> in the land<MH776>, if<MH3588> there is a plague<MH1698>, if<MH3588> there is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>blight<MH7711b> <i>or</i> mildew<MH3420>, locust<MH697> <i>or</i> grasshopper<MH2625>, if<MH3588> their enemy<MH340> harasses<MH6887a> them in the land<MH776> of their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>cities<MH8179>, whatever<MH3605> plague<MH5061>, whatever<MH3605> sickness<MH4245a> <i>there is,</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>whatever<MH3605, 834> prayer<MH8605> or plea<MH8467> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>is offered<MH1961> by any<MH3605> person<MH120> <i>or</i> by all<MH3605> Your people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>each<MH376> knowing<MH3045> the affliction<MH5061> of his own heart<MH3824>, and spreading<MH6566> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>hands<MH3709> toward<MH413> this<MH2088> house<MH1004>;
