This took way longer than I anticipated, and surprisingly not because of the video. \n\nI started working on it at a coffee shop in NW with the instruments that come with Logic Pro. I got the initial structure of the song done, except for figuring out how it would end, and then decided to got home to finish it. \n\nOn the 35 minute bike ride home, I kept going over it in my head and figure out how to end it, and also decided to throw in the little synth arpeggios for the second half. Back at home, I switched most of the instruments over to the East\/West instruments which sound way better and are much more expressive. \n\nI didn't really know what to expect going into this today, but I'm pretty happy with it!"},{"title":"Day 3 - Breaking News","name":"Breaking News","day":3,"duration":"00:20","seconds":21,"published":"2016-12-23","timestamp":1482451200,"url":"https:\/\/aaronparecki.com\/2016\/12\/23\/12\/","filename":"audio\/Day3.mp3","time_spent":"2.33","time_published":"16:30","keywords":["strings","horns","dramatic"],"description":"Day 3. This one only took and hour. Not really sure what I was going for here either. I'm not super happy with the little string trills, but I think with another hour or so I could tweak them to sound better. I actually started reading the manual for the East\/West orchestra samples and there's a loooot of flexibility they give you with controlling the finger position, bowing direction, where the bow comes down on the strings, etc. I'll get a chance to play with those more later. But for now, happy to have today's song done before 9am!"},{"title":"Day 5 - Loop","name":"Loop","day":5,"duration":"00:35","seconds":35,"published":"2016-12-25","timestamp":1482624000,"url":"https:\/\/aaronparecki.com\/2016\/12\/25\/8\/day-5","filename":"audio\/Day5.mp3","time_spent":"2.08","time_published":"12:47","keywords":["drums","piano","loop"],"description":"Day 5. This morning I was trying to think of what I'd write today, and then I realized this tune had been going through my head for a while, so I jotted it down on the piano. I filled it out with a couple other instruments a bit later. For this track I was experimenting with mastering techniques more than instrumentation. Trying to make sure there was a good balance between the sound from the various instruments, playing with reverb and EQ to separate the instruments from each other. I still have a lot to learn in that department. This song ends abruptly because it can be played on a continuous loop."},{"title":"Day 6 - Submarine","name":"Submarine","day":6,"duration":"00:36","seconds":36,"published":"2016-12-26","timestamp":1482710400,"url":"https:\/\/aaronparecki.com\/2016\/12\/26\/7\/day-6","filename":"audio\/Day6.mp3","time_spent":"1.1","time_published":"15:26","keywords":["synth","piano","drums","fadeout"],"description":"Day 6. This is the first time I've recorded my own audio for a song, and only the third time I've used audio samples at all. The clinking glass sound I recorded on the kitchen counter. It's me hitting two pint glasses with the handle of a tea spoon. I recorded about 8 takes of 16 bars of the rhythm. I used the best five 4-bar phrases in the final song. It was an interesting experiment cleaning up the audio so that it worked well with the rest of the song. I first used a high pass filter to remove all the low frequencies which cut out the \"thumping\" sound and the sound of the glass slowly sliding on the table every time I hit it. I discovered that Logic Pro has a \"quantize\" function that works on audio, not just midi! I used that to get the glass hits better synced up with the beat. I used a pitch adjustment filter to drop the pitch about a quarter tone at the end of the first and third bars of each phrase. I liked the way this detuning sounded, so I echoed that in some of the other instruments as well. For today's song, my dad chose the instrumentation and style, and I had to see what I could come up with. He gave me \"horns\" and \"concerto\". So I started by studying the structure of concertos. A concerto typically features a single instrument soloist, with an orchestra or piano backing it up. They typically start out with an \"exposition\" from the instruments other than the featured instrument, introducing the theme. Then the second exposition features the soloist introducing the theme again. This is followed by a \"development\" section, featuring the soloist, usually in a different key, which ends by building up on the maj7th chord to a coda section which repeats the original theme in the tonic.
