they will certainly<MH403> turn<MH5186> your heart<MH3824> away<MH5186> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>to follow<MH310> their gods<MH430>.” Solomon<MH8010> clung<MH1692> to these<MH1992a> in love<MH157>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>He had<MH1961> seven<MH7651> hundred<MH3967> wives<MH802>, <i>who were</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>princesses<MH8282>, and three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> concubines<MH6370>; and his wives<MH802> turned<MH5186> his heart<MH3820> away<MH5186>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For when<MH6256> Solomon<MH8010> was old<MH2209>, his wives<MH802> turned<MH5186> his heart<MH3824> away<MH5186> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to follow<MH310> other<MH312> gods<MH430>; and his heart<MH3824> was not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>wholly<MH8003> devoted<MH8003> to the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430>, as the heart<MH3824> of his father<MH1> David<MH1732> <i>had been.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For Solomon<MH8010> became<MH1980> a follower<MH1980, 310> of Ashtoreth<MH6252b> the goddess<MH430> of the Sidonians<MH6722>, and of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Milcom<MH4445b> the abhorrent<MH8251> idol<MH8251> of the Ammonites<MH5984>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Solomon<MH8010> did<MH6213a> what<MH7451a> was<MH7451a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>, and did not follow<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> fully<MH4390>, as his father<MH1> David<MH1732> <i>had done.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then<MH227> Solomon<MH8010> built<MH1129> a high<MH1116> place<MH1116> for Chemosh<MH3645>, the abhorrent<MH8251> idol<MH8251> of Moab<MH4124>, on the mountain<MH2022> that is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>east<MH5921, 6440> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, and for Molech<MH4432>, the abhorrent<MH8251> idol<MH8251> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He also did<MH6213a> the same<MH3651> for all<MH3605> his foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802>, who burned<MH6999> incense<MH6999> and sacrificed<MH2076> to their gods<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now the LORD<MH3068> was angry<MH599> with Solomon<MH8010> because<MH3588> his heart<MH3824> had turned<MH5186> away<MH5186> from the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, who had appeared<MH7200> to him twice<MH6471>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and had commanded<MH6680> him regarding<MH5921> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>, that he was not to follow<MH1980, 310> other<MH312> gods<MH430>; but he did not comply<MH8104> with<MH8104> what<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Solomon<MH8010>, “Since<MH3282, 834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>you have done<MH1961, 5973> this<MH2088>, and you have not kept<MH8104> My covenant<MH1285> and My statutes<MH2708>, which<MH834> I have commanded<MH6680> you, I will certainly<MH7167> tear<MH7167> the kingdom<MH4467> away<MH7167> from you, and will give<MH5414> it to your servant<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>However<MH389>, I will not do<MH6213a> it in your days<MH3117>, <i>only</i> for the sake<MH4616> of your father<MH1> David<MH1732>; <i>but</i> I will tear<MH7167> it away<MH7167> from the hand<MH3027> of your son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Yet<MH7534b> I will not tear<MH7167> away<MH7167> all<MH3605> the kingdom<MH4467>, <i>but</i> I will give<MH5414> one<MH259> tribe<MH7626> to your son<MH1121> for the sake<MH4616> of My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732>, and for the sake<MH4616> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, which<MH834> I have chosen<MH977>.” <p class="hdg">God Raises Adversaries</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> raised<MH6965> up<MH6965> an adversary<MH7854> against Solomon<MH8010>, Hadad<MH1908> the Edomite<MH130>; he was of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>royal<MH4428> line<MH2233> in Edom<MH112b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>For it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when David<MH1732> was in Edom<MH112b> and Joab<MH3097> the commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> had gone<MH5927> up<MH5927> to bury<MH6912> those killed<MH2491a> <i>in battle,</i> and had struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> every<MH3605> male<MH2145> in Edom<MH112b> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>(for Joab<MH3097> and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> stayed<MH3427> there<MH8033> for six<MH8337a> months<MH2320>, until<MH5704> he had eliminated<MH3772> every<MH3605> male<MH2145> in Edom<MH112b>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>that Hadad<MH1908> fled<MH1272> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>to Egypt<MH4714>, he and certain<MH376> Edomites<MH130> of his father’s<MH1> servants<MH5650> with him, while Hadad<MH1908> <i>was</i> a young<MH6996a> boy<MH5288>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>They set<MH6965> out<MH6965> from Midian<MH4080> and came<MH935> to Paran<MH6290>; and they took<MH3947> men<MH376> with them from Paran<MH6290> and came<MH935> to Egypt<MH4714>, to Pharaoh<MH6547> king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714>, who gave<MH5414> him a house<MH1004> and assigned<MH559> him food<MH3899> and gave<MH5414> him land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now Hadad<MH1908> found<MH4672> great<MH3966> favor<MH2580> in the sight<MH5869> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, so that he gave<MH5414> him in marriage<MH802> the sister<MH269> of his own wife<MH802>, the sister<MH269> of Tahpenes<MH8472> the queen<MH1377>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the sister<MH269> of Tahpenes<MH8472> gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to his son<MH1121> Genubath<MH1592>, whom Tahpenes<MH8472> weaned<MH1580> in Pharaoh’s<MH6547> house<MH1004>; and Genubath<MH1592> was in Pharaoh’s<MH6547> house<MH1004> among<MH8432> the sons<MH1121> of Pharaoh<MH6547>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But when Hadad<MH1908> heard<MH8085> in Egypt<MH4714> that David<MH1732> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1> and that Joab<MH3097> the commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> was dead<MH4191>, Hadad<MH1908> said<MH559> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, “Let<MH7971> me go<MH7971>, so that I may go<MH1980> to my own country<MH776>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>However, Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to him, “But what<MH4100> have you lacked<MH2638> with me that you are here<MH2009>, requesting<MH1245> to go<MH1980> to your own country<MH776>?” And he answered<MH559>, “Nothing<MH3808>; nevertheless<MH3588> you must<MH7971> let<MH7971> me go<MH7971>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>God<MH430> also raised<MH6965> up<MH6965> <i>another</i> adversary<MH7854> against him, Rezon<MH7331> the son<MH1121> of Eliada<MH450>, who<MH834> had fled<MH1272> from his master<MH113> Hadadezer<MH1909>, king<MH4428> of Zobah<MH6678>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And he gathered<MH6908> men<MH376> to himself and became<MH1961> leader<MH8269> of a marauding<MH1416> band<MH1416>, after David<MH1732> killed<MH2026> those <i>of Zobah;</i> and they went<MH1980> to Damascus<MH1834> and stayed<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>there, and reigned<MH4427a> in Damascus<MH1834>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So he was an adversary<MH7854> to Israel<MH3478> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of Solomon<MH8010>, along with the harm<MH7463a> that Hadad<MH1908> <i>inflicted;</i> and he felt<MH6973> disgust<MH6973> for Israel<MH3478> and reigned<MH4427a> over<MH5921> Aram<MH758>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then Jeroboam<MH3379> the son<MH1121> of Nebat<MH5028>, an Ephraimite<MH673> of Zeredah<MH6868a>, Solomon’s<MH8010> servant<MH5650>, whose mother’s<MH517> name<MH8034> was Zeruah<MH6871>, a widow<MH490>, also <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>rebelled<MH7311, 3027> against the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Now this<MH2088> was the reason<MH1697> why<MH834> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>rebelled<MH7311, 3027> against the king<MH4428>: Solomon<MH8010> built<MH1129> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Millo<MH4407>, <i>and</i> closed<MH5462> up<MH5462> the breach<MH6556> of the city<MH5892b> of his father<MH1> David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Now the man<MH376> Jeroboam<MH3379> was a valiant<MH2428> warrior<MH1368>, and when Solomon<MH8010> saw<MH7200> that the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>industrious<MH4399, 6213a>, he appointed<MH6485> him over all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>forced<MH5447> labor<MH5447> of the house<MH1004> of Joseph<MH3130>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at that time<MH6256>, when Jeroboam<MH3379> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, that the prophet<MH5030> Ahijah<MH281> the Shilonite<MH7888> found<MH4672> him on the road<MH1870>. Now <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Ahijah had clothed<MH3680> himself with a new<MH2319> cloak<MH8008>; and both<MH8147> of them were alone<MH905> in the field<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then Ahijah<MH281> took<MH8610> hold<MH8610> of the new<MH2319> cloak<MH8008> which<MH834> was on him and tore<MH7167> it into twelve<MH8147, 6240> pieces<MH7168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to Jeroboam<MH3379>, “Take<MH3947> for yourself ten<MH6235> pieces<MH7168>; for this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: ‘Behold<MH2009>, I am going to tear<MH7167> the kingdom<MH4467> away<MH7167> from the hand<MH3027> of Solomon<MH8010> and give<MH5414> you ten<MH6235> tribes<MH7626> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>(but he shall have<MH1961> one<MH259> tribe<MH7626>, for the sake<MH4616> of My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> and for the sake<MH4616> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, the city<MH5892b> which<MH834> I have chosen<MH977> from all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>because<MH3282, 834> they have abandoned<MH5800a> Me, and have worshiped<MH2331c> Ashtoreth<MH6252b> the goddess<MH430> of the Sidonians<MH6722>, Chemosh<MH3645> the god<MH430> of Moab<MH4124>, and Milcom<MH4445b> the god<MH430> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>; and they have not walked<MH1980> in My ways<MH1870>, doing<MH6213a> what<MH3477> is<MH3477> right<MH3477> in My sight<MH5869> and <i>keeping</i> My statutes<MH2708> and My ordinances<MH4941>, as his father<MH1> David<MH1732> <i>did.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Nevertheless I will not take<MH3947> the whole<MH3605> kingdom<MH4467> out of his hand<MH3027>, but I will make<MH7896> him ruler<MH5387a> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of his life<MH2425b>, for the sake<MH4616> of My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> whom<MH834> I chose<MH977>, who<MH834> kept<MH8104> My commandments<MH4687> and My statutes<MH2708>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>but I will take<MH3947> the kingdom<MH4410> from his son’s<MH1121> hand<MH3027> and give<MH5414> it to you; <i>that is,</i> ten<MH6235> tribes<MH7626>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>But to his son<MH1121> I will give<MH5414> one<MH259> tribe<MH7626>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> may always<MH3605, 3117> have<MH1961> a lamp<MH5215a> before<MH6440> Me in Jerusalem<MH3389>, the city<MH5892b> where<MH834, 8033> I have chosen<MH977> for Myself to put<MH7760> My name<MH8034>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>However I will take<MH3947> you, and you shall reign<MH4427a> over all<MH3605> that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>you desire<MH183>, and you shall be king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then it shall be, that if<MH518> you listen<MH8085> to all<MH3605> that I command<MH6680> you and walk<MH1980> in My ways<MH1870>, and do<MH6213a> what<MH3477> is<MH3477> right<MH3477> in My sight<MH5869> by keeping<MH8104> My statutes<MH2708> and My commandments<MH4687>, as My servant<MH5650> David<MH1732> did<MH6213a>, then I will be with you and build<MH1129> you an enduring<MH539> house<MH1004> as I built<MH1129> for David<MH1732>, and I will give<MH5414> Israel<MH3478> to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>So I will oppress<MH6031a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> of David<MH1732> for this<MH2088>, but not always<MH3605, 3117>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Solomon<MH8010> sought<MH1245> therefore to put<MH4191> Jeroboam<MH3379> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>; but Jeroboam<MH3379> set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and fled<MH1272> to Egypt<MH4714> to Shishak<MH7895> king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714>, and he was in Egypt<MH4714> until<MH5704> the death<MH4194> of Solomon<MH8010>. <p class="hdg">The Death of Solomon</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/11-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Now the rest<MH3499a> of the acts<MH1697> of Solomon<MH8010> and whatever<MH3605, 834> he did<MH6213a>, and his wisdom<MH2451>, are they not written<MH3789> in the Book<MH5612> of the Acts<MH1697> of Solomon<MH8010>?
