student at Penn State Fayette. Without the means to complete an internship or study abroad, Renata credits a research opportunity provided by a faculty member as the experience that helped her to secure her first job as an engineer. Today, Engel leads Penn State World Campus, which offers 200 degree and certificate programs to more than 19,000 students—and to ensure more online learners with financial need have outside the-virtual-classroom learning experiences, Engel and her husband, Leland, recently established the Collective Commitment to Equity Fund in partnership with engineering alumna Priscilla Guthrie ’71. Kayland Brown, a fourth-year World Campus student pursuing a bachelor of science degree in energy and sustainability policy, is the first recipient of funding. I’ve been interested in engineering for as long as I can remember, so when it came time topick a college with an excellent program, Penn State was an easy choice.</p> <h2><span class="gray-highlight">How did your trip to Belize change your Penn State experience?</span></h2> <p>I travelled to Belize with a bunch of Penn State students—and I’m so grateful that I did. Having completed all but one of my semesters online, I found a learning environment that I loved, but I never quite felt like I was a part of the University student community. Sharing this trip and being surrounded by so many fellow Penn Staters helped me to feel like I belong here.</p> <h2><span class="gray-highlight">What impact did the Collective Commitment to Equity Fund have on your travels?</span></h2> <p>My major requires participation in an internship or study abroad program, and receiving funding from the Collective Commitment to Equity Fund made my experience in Belize much more comfortable and memorable. The support significantly decreased the cost of the trip, and because I felt more financially secure, I was able to really enjoy myself. I was even able to purchase some souvenirs—and supporting the local communities warmed my heart.</p> <h2><span class="gray-highlight">What was your biggest takeaway from being abroad?</span></h2> <p>Upon returning from the trip, I was able to put into perspective just how different life is in Belize as compared to the U.S. I was struck by how people took care of each other and how connected the communities were. I found this sense of community truly beautiful.</p> <h2><span class="gray-highlight">Has the support you received from the Collective Commitment to Equity Fund changed your relationship with the University?</span></h2> <p>I’ve always wanted to gain a better understanding of the diverse student body at Penn State World Campus, and this award helped to remind me that every student has a different story. I realize that not every Penn Stater lives in Pennsylvania, or even in the U.S. It would be very interesting to learn about how I can help to make their time at the University even a little bit easier.</p> <h2><span class="gray-highlight">What’s next after you graduate in December?</span></h2> <p>I’m very interested in the renewable energy sector, but I also recognize the critical importance of addressing the current water crisis in the U.S. My primary goal is to make a significant impact with my career, and there are so many fields that need attention.
