and on you he shall sacrifice<MH2076> the priests<MH3548> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116> who burn<MH6999> incense<MH6999> on you, and human<MH120> bones<MH6106> shall burn<MH8313> on you.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then he gave<MH5414> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>sign<MH4159> on the same<MH1931> day<MH3117>, saying<MH559>, “This<MH2088> is the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>sign<MH4159> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696>: ‘Behold<MH2009>, the altar<MH4196> shall be torn<MH7167> to<MH7167> pieces<MH7167> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>ashes<MH1880> which<MH834> are on it shall be poured<MH8210> out<MH8210>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now when the king<MH4428> heard<MH8085> the statement<MH1697> of the man<MH376> of God<MH430> which<MH834> he cried<MH7121> out<MH7121> against<MH5921> the altar<MH4196> in Bethel<MH1008>, Jeroboam<MH3379> stretched<MH7971> out<MH7971> his hand<MH3027> from the altar<MH4196>, saying<MH559>, “Seize<MH8610> him!” But his hand<MH3027> which<MH834> he had stretched<MH7971> out<MH7971> toward<MH5921> him dried<MH3001> up<MH3001>, and he could<MH3201> not draw<MH7725> it back<MH7725> to himself. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>The altar<MH4196> also was torn<MH7167> to<MH7167> pieces<MH7167> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>ashes<MH1880> were poured<MH8210> out<MH8210> from the altar<MH4196>, in accordance with the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>sign<MH4159> which<MH834> the man<MH376> of God<MH430> had given<MH5414> by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> responded<MH6030a> and said<MH559> to the man<MH376> of God<MH430>, “Please<MH4994> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>appease<MH2470b, 6440> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> and pray<MH6419> for me, so that my hand<MH3027> may be restored<MH7725> to me.” So the man<MH376> of God<MH430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>appeased<MH2470b, 6440> the LORD<MH3068>, and the king’s<MH4428> hand<MH3027> was restored<MH7725> to him, and it became<MH1961> as it was before<MH7223>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH1696> to the man<MH376> of God<MH430>, “Come<MH935> home<MH1004> with me and refresh<MH5582> yourself, and I will give<MH5414> you a gift<MH4991>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But the man<MH376> of God<MH430> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, “If<MH518> you were to give<MH5414> me half<MH2677> your house<MH1004>, I would not go<MH935> with you, nor<MH3808> would I eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> or drink<MH8354> water<MH4325> in this<MH2088> place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For so<MH3651> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>it was commanded<MH6680> me by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, ‘You shall not eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> nor<MH3808> drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>, nor<MH3808> return<MH7725> by the way<MH1870> that you came<MH1980>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So he went<MH1980> another<MH312> way<MH1870> and did not return<MH7725> by the way<MH1870> that he had come<MH935> to Bethel<MH1008>. <p class="hdg">The Disobedient Prophet</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now an old<MH2205> prophet<MH5030> was living<MH3427> in Bethel<MH1008>; and his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>sons<MH1121> came<MH935> and told<MH5608> him all<MH3605> the deeds<MH4639> which<MH834> the man<MH376> of God<MH430> had done<MH6213a> that day<MH3117> in Bethel<MH1008>; the words<MH1697> which<MH834> he had spoken<MH1696> to the king<MH4428>, these also they reported<MH5608> to their father<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And their father<MH1> said<MH1696> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Which<MH335, 2088> way<MH1870> did he go<MH1980>?” Now his sons<MH1121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>had seen<MH7200> the way<MH1870> that the man<MH376> of God<MH430> who<MH834> came<MH935> from Judah<MH3063> had gone<MH1980>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to his sons<MH1121>, “Saddle<MH2280> the donkey<MH2543> for me.” So they saddled<MH2280> the donkey<MH2543> for him and he rode<MH7392> <i>away</i> on it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So he went<MH1980> after<MH310> the man<MH376> of God<MH430> and found<MH4672> him sitting<MH3427> under<MH8478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>an oak<MH424>; and he said<MH559> to him, “Are you the man<MH376> of God<MH430> who<MH834> came<MH935> from Judah<MH3063>?” And he said<MH559>, “I am.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to him, “Come<MH1980> home<MH1004> with me and eat<MH398> bread<MH3899>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, “I cannot<MH3201, 3808> return<MH7725> with you, nor<MH3808> come<MH935> with you, nor<MH3808> will I eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> or drink<MH8354> water<MH4325> with you in this<MH2088> place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>command<MH1697> <i>came</i> to me by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>: ‘You shall not eat<MH398> bread<MH3899>, nor<MH3808> drink<MH8354> water<MH4325> there<MH8033>; do not return<MH7725> by going<MH1980> the way<MH1870> that you came<MH1980>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to him, “I too<MH1571> am a prophet<MH5030> like<MH3644> you, and an angel<MH4397> spoke<MH1696> to me by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, ‘Bring<MH7725> him back<MH7725> with you to your house<MH1004>, so that he may eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> and drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>.’” <i>But</i> he lied<MH3584> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So he went<MH7725> back<MH7725> with him, and ate<MH398> bread<MH3899> in his house<MH1004> and drank<MH8354> water<MH4325>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, as they were sitting<MH3427> down<MH3427> at the table<MH7979>, that the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to the prophet<MH5030> who<MH834> had brought<MH7725> him back<MH7725>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and he cried<MH7121> out<MH7121> to the man<MH376> of God<MH430> who<MH834> came<MH935> from Judah<MH3063>, saying<MH559>, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Because<MH3282, 3588> you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>disobeyed<MH4784> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>, and have not kept<MH8104> the commandment<MH4687> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> commanded<MH6680> you, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>but have returned<MH7725> and eaten<MH398> bread<MH3899> and drunk<MH8354> water<MH4325> in the place<MH4725> of which<MH834> He said<MH1696> to you, “You are not to eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> nor<MH408> drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>”; your dead<MH5038> body<MH5038> will not come<MH935> to the grave<MH6913> of your fathers<MH1>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>It came<MH1961> about<MH1961> after<MH310> he had eaten<MH398> bread<MH3899> and after<MH310> he had drunk<MH8354>, that he saddled<MH2280> the donkey<MH2543> for him, for the prophet<MH5030> whom<MH834> he had brought<MH7725> back<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now when he had gone<MH1980>, a lion<MH743b> met<MH4672> him on the way<MH1870> and killed<MH4191> him, and his body<MH5038> was thrown<MH7993> on the road<MH1870>, with the donkey<MH2543> standing<MH5975> beside<MH681a> it; the lion<MH743b> also was standing<MH5975> beside<MH681a> the body<MH5038>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And behold<MH2009>, men<MH376> passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> and saw<MH7200> the body<MH5038> thrown<MH7993> on the road<MH1870>, and the lion<MH743b> standing<MH5975> beside<MH681a> the body<MH5038>; so they came<MH935> and told<MH1696> <i>about it</i> in the city<MH5892b> where<MH834> the old<MH2205> prophet<MH5030> had lived<MH3427>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now when the prophet<MH5030> who<MH834> had brought<MH7725> him back<MH7725> from the way<MH1870> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> he said<MH559>, “It is the man<MH376> of God<MH430>, who<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>disobeyed<MH4784> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>; therefore the LORD<MH3068> has given<MH5414> him to the lion<MH743b>, which has torn<MH7665> him and killed<MH4191> him, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> He spoke<MH1696> to him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then he spoke<MH1696> to his sons<MH1121>, saying<MH559>, “Saddle<MH2280> the donkey<MH2543> for me.” And they saddled<MH2280> <i>it.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then he went<MH1980> and found<MH4672> his body<MH5038> thrown<MH7993> on the road<MH1870>, with the donkey<MH2543> and the lion<MH743b> standing<MH5975> beside<MH681a> the body<MH5038>; the lion<MH743b> had not eaten<MH398> the body<MH5038> nor<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>harmed<MH7665> the donkey<MH2543>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So the prophet<MH5030> picked<MH5375> up<MH5375> the body<MH5038> of the man<MH376> of God<MH430> and laid<MH5117> it on the donkey<MH2543> and brought<MH7725> it back<MH7725>; and he came<MH935> to the city<MH5892b> of the old<MH2205> prophet<MH5030> to mourn<MH5594> and to bury<MH6912> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>He laid<MH5117> his body<MH5038> in his own grave<MH6913>, and they mourned<MH5594> over<MH5921> him, <i>saying,</i> “Oh<MH1945>, my brother<MH251>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And after<MH310> he had buried<MH6912> him, he talked<MH559> to his sons<MH1121>, saying<MH559>, “When I die<MH4191>, bury<MH6912> me in the grave<MH6913> in which<MH834> the man<MH376> of God<MH430> is buried<MH6912>; lay<MH5117> my bones<MH6106> beside<MH681a> his bones<MH6106>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>For the thing<MH1697> will certainly<MH1961> come<MH1961> to<MH1961> pass<MH1961> which<MH834> he cried<MH7121> out<MH7121> by the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> against<MH5921> the altar<MH4196> that is in Bethel<MH1008>, and against<MH5921> all<MH3605> the houses<MH1004> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116> which<MH834> are in the cities<MH5892b> of Samaria<MH8111>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/13-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>After<MH310> this<MH2088> event<MH1697>, Jeroboam<MH3379> did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>abandon<MH7725> his evil<MH7451a> way<MH1870>, but he again<MH7725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>appointed<MH6213a> priests<MH3548> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>all<MH7098> the people<MH5971a>;
