Para ello, toma como base las estructuras míticas predeterminadas por Gilbert Durand, Lévi-Strauss o Joseph Campbell. En este sentido, la obra alcanza con Goethe un cariz filosófico y humanista sin precedentes, que nos permite, aún hoy, afrontar su lectura desde una perspectiva íntima y reflexiva. Sin embargo, la enorme riqueza de sus símbolos y alegorías hace que su interpretación se torne a menudo difícil y compleja. Por esta razón, un análisis como el que presentamos, centrado de manera específica en su contenido simbólico y filosófico, puede ayudar a todo aquel que pretenda acercarse a Fausto con el firme ánimo de encontrarse a sí mismo. El itinerario intelectual de su protagonista coincide con el que tuvo lugar en Europa en las postrimerías del siglo xix con el paso del mundo moderno al contemporáneo. En este sentido, la crisis de valores y la desproporcionada sensación de omnipotencia que se desprende del modelo postrevolucionario decimonónico coincide dramáticamente con el carácter fáustico del protagonista de esta obra, que lo lleva, al igual que a la actual sociedad de consumo, a sucumbir en una especie de descensus ad inferos o caída psicológica nihilista.
