and the king<MH4430> and his nobles<MH7261>, his wives<MH7695>, and his concubines<MH3904> drank<MH8355> out of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>They drank<MH8355> the wine<MH2562> and praised<MH7624> the gods<MH426> of gold<MH1722> and silver<MH3702>, of bronze<MH5174>, iron<MH6523>, wood<MH636>, and stone<MH69>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Suddenly<MH8160> the fingers<MH677> of a human<MH606> hand<MH3028> emerged<MH5312> and began writing<MH3790> opposite<MH6903> the lampstand<MH5043> on the plaster<MH1528> of the wall<MH3797> of the king&#8217;s<MH4430> palace<MH1965>, and the king<MH4430> saw<MH2370> the back<MH6447> of the hand<MH3028> that did the writing<MH3790>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then<MH116> the king&#8217;s<MH4430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>face<MH2122> became<MH8133> pale<MH8133> and his thoughts<MH7476> alarmed<MH927> him, and his hip<MH2783> joints<MH7001> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>loosened<MH8271> and his knees<MH755a> began knocking<MH5368> together<MH1668>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The king<MH4430> called<MH7123> aloud<MH2429> to bring<MH5954> in<MH5954> the sorcerers<MH826>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Chaldeans<MH3779>, and the diviners<MH1505>. The king<MH4430> began<MH6032> speaking<MH6032> and said<MH560> to the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>, &#8220;Anyone<MH3606, 606> who<MH1768> can read<MH7123> this<MH1836> inscription<MH3792> and explain<MH2331b> its interpretation<MH6591> to me shall be clothed<MH3848> with purple<MH711> and <i>have</i> a necklace<MH2002> of gold<MH1722> around<MH5922> his neck<MH6676>, and have<MH7981> authority<MH7981> as third<MH8533a> <i>ruler</i> in the kingdom<MH4437>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then<MH116> all<MH3606> the king&#8217;s<MH4430> wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> came<MH5954> in<MH5954>, but they could<MH3546> not read<MH7123> the inscription<MH3792> or make<MH3046> known<MH3046> its interpretation<MH6591> to the king<MH4430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then<MH116> King<MH4430> Belshazzar<MH1113> was greatly<MH7690> alarmed<MH927>, his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>face<MH2122> grew<MH8133> <i>even more</i> pale<MH8133>, and his nobles<MH7261> were perplexed<MH7672>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The queen<MH4433> entered<MH5954> the banquet<MH4961> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>hall<MH1005> because<MH6903> of the words<MH4406> of the king<MH4430> and his nobles<MH7261>; the queen<MH4433> began<MH6032> to<MH6032> speak<MH6032> and said<MH560>, &#8220;O king<MH4430>, live<MH2418> forever<MH5957>! Do not let your thoughts<MH7476> alarm<MH927> you or your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>face<MH2122> be pale<MH8133>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>There<MH383> is<MH383> a man<MH1400> in your kingdom<MH4437> in whom<MH1768> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>a spirit<MH7308> of the holy<MH6922> gods<MH426>; and in the days<MH3118> of your father<MH2>, illumination<MH5094b>, insight<MH7924>, and wisdom<MH2452> like the wisdom<MH2452> of the gods<MH426> were found<MH7912> in him. And King<MH4430> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020>, your father<MH2>&#8212;your father<MH2> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>the king<MH4430>&#8212;appointed<MH6966> him chief<MH7229> of the soothsayer<MH2749> priests<MH2749>, sorcerers<MH826>, Chaldeans<MH3779>, <i>and</i> diviners<MH1505>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><i>This was</i> because<MH6903, 1768> an extraordinary<MH3493> spirit<MH7308>, knowledge<MH4486> and insight<MH7924>, interpretation<MH6590> of dreams<MH2493>, explanation<MH263> of riddles<MH280>, and solving<MH8271> of difficult<MH7001> problems<MH7001> were found<MH7912> in this Daniel<MH1841>, whom<MH1768> the king<MH4430> named<MH8036> Belteshazzar<MH1096>. Let Daniel<MH1841> now<MH3705> be summoned<MH7123> and he will declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Daniel Interprets the Handwriting on the Wall</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841> was brought<MH5954> in<MH5954> before<MH6925> the king<MH4430>. The king<MH4430> began<MH6032> speaking<MH6032> and said<MH560> to Daniel<MH1841>, &#8220;Are you that Daniel<MH1841> who<MH1768> is one of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>exiles<MH1123, 1547> from Judah<MH3061>, whom<MH1768> my father<MH2> the king<MH4430> brought<MH858> from Judah<MH3061>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now I have heard<MH8086> about<MH5922> you that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>a spirit<MH7308> of the gods<MH426> is in you, and that illumination<MH5094b>, insight<MH7924>, and extraordinary<MH3493> wisdom<MH2452> have been found<MH7912> in you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Just now<MH3705> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> <i>and</i> the sorcerers<MH826> were brought<MH5954> in<MH5954> before<MH6925> me to read<MH7123> this<MH1836> inscription<MH3792> and make<MH3046> its interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to me, but they could<MH3546> not declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>message<MH4406>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But I personally<MH576> have heard<MH8086> about<MH5922> you, that you are able<MH3202> to give<MH6590> interpretations<MH6590> and solve<MH8271> difficult<MH7001> problems<MH7001>. Now<MH3705> if<MH2006> you are able<MH3202> to read<MH7123> the inscription<MH3792> and make<MH3046> its interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to me, you will be clothed<MH3848> with purple<MH711> and <i>wear</i> a necklace<MH2002> of gold<MH1722> around<MH5922> your neck<MH6676>, and you will have<MH7981> authority<MH7981> as the third<MH8531> <i>ruler</i> in the kingdom<MH4437>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841> replied<MH6032> and said<MH560> before<MH6925> the king<MH4430>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Keep your gifts<MH4978> for yourself or give<MH3052> your rewards<MH5023> to someone<MH321> else<MH321>; however<MH1297>, I will read<MH7123> the inscription<MH3792> to the king<MH4430> and make<MH3046> the interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>O king<MH4430>, the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> God<MH426> granted<MH3052> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>sovereignty<MH4437>, greatness<MH7238>, honor<MH3367>, and majesty<MH1923> to Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> your father<MH2>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now because<MH4481> of the greatness<MH7238> which<MH1768> He granted<MH3052> him, all<MH3606> the peoples<MH5972>, nations<MH524>, and <i>populations of all</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>languages<MH3961> trembled<MH2112> and feared<MH1763> in his presence<MH6925>; whomever<MH1768> he wished<MH6634>, he killed<MH6992>, and whomever<MH1768> he wished<MH6634>, he spared<MH2418> alive<MH2418>; and whomever<MH1768> he wished<MH6634> he elevated<MH7313>, and whomever<MH1768> he wished<MH6634> he humbled<MH8214>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But when<MH1768> his heart<MH3825> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>was arrogant<MH7313> and his spirit<MH7308> became<MH8631> so <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>overbearing<MH8631> that he behaved<MH2103> presumptuously<MH2103>, he was deposed<MH5182> from his royal<MH4437> throne<MH3764>, and <i>his</i> dignity<MH3367> was taken<MH5709> away<MH5709> from him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>He was also driven<MH2957> away<MH2957> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>mankind<MH606>, and his heart<MH3825> was made<MH7739a> like<MH5974, 7739a> <i>that of</i> animals<MH2423>, and his dwelling<MH4070> place<MH4070> <i>was</i> with the wild<MH6167> donkeys<MH6167>. He was given<MH2939> grass<MH6212b> to<MH2939> eat<MH2939> like cattle<MH8450>, and his body<MH1655> was drenched<MH6647> with the dew<MH2920> of heaven<MH8065>, until<MH5705, 1768> he recognized<MH3046> that the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> God<MH426> is ruler<MH7990> over the realm<MH4437> of mankind<MH606>, and <i>that</i> He sets<MH6966> over<MH5922> it whomever<MH4479, 1768> He wishes<MH6634>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Yet you, his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>son<MH1247>, Belshazzar<MH1113>, have not humbled<MH8214> your heart<MH3825>, even<MH1768> though<MH6903> you knew<MH3046> all<MH3606> this<MH1836>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>but you have risen<MH7313> up against<MH5922> the Lord<MH4756> of heaven<MH8065>; and they have brought<MH858> the vessels<MH3984> of His house<MH1005> before<MH6925> you, and you and your nobles<MH7261>, your wives<MH7695>, and your concubines<MH3904> have been drinking<MH8355> wine<MH2562> out of them; and you have praised<MH7624> the gods<MH426> of silver<MH3702> and gold<MH1722>, of bronze<MH5174>, iron<MH6523>, wood<MH636>, and stone<MH69>, which<MH1768> do not see<MH7200>, nor<MH3809> hear<MH8086>, nor<MH3809> understand<MH3046>. But the God<MH426> in whose<MH1768> hand<MH3028> are your life-breath<MH5396> and all your ways<MH735>, you have not glorified<MH1922>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then<MH116> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>hand<MH3028> was sent<MH7972> from Him and this<MH1836> inscription<MH3792> was written<MH7560> out. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>&#8220;Now this<MH1836> is the inscription<MH3792> that was written<MH7560>: <p class="tab1stline">&#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>MENE<LE><MH4484>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>MENE<LE><MH4484>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>TEKE<LE>L<MH8625b>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>UPHARSIN<MH6537b>.&#8217; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>This<MH1836> is the interpretation<MH6591> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>message<MH4406>: &#8216;MENE<LE><MH4484>&#8217;&#8212;God<MH426> has numbered<MH4483> your kingdom<MH4437> and put<MH8000> an<MH8000> end<MH8000> to<MH8000> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>&#8216;TEKE<LE>L<MH8625b>&#8217;&#8212;you have been weighed<MH8625a> on the scales<MH3977> and found<MH7912> deficient<MH2627>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>&#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>PERE<LE>S<MH6537b>&#8217;&#8212;your kingdom<MH4437> has been<MH6537a> divided<MH6537a> and given<MH3052> to the Medes<MH4076> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>Persians<MH6540>.&#8221;
