Ferguson (posted on 27-Jul-2010)
Filmed on location on an island in Maine, this movie is evocative and achieves transporting its viewers into the lives of its characters. From the clanging of an off-shore buoy to the sloshing of waves to the wafting of a breeze in bushes, the movie was filmed with no little artistry and sensitivity. Gish, Davis, Price and Sothern all make one feel that they themselves are facing the very issues of aging, loss and regret their characters are feeling. Each actor imbues their role with an extra dose of behind-the-facade realism. "The Whales of August" is beautifully rendered but drives home the theme of life's brevity. The obvious affecionados of this movie will be those who have lived much of life, and can relate closely with the collection of elder characters. There is, however, much for younger viewers to appreciate. Those at the beginning of life can learn that a life lived with generosity, compassion, and a sense of humor will be a life not regretted.

Have you seen this film?
