Techniques for Broadcasters and OTT Service Providers<br /> </b><br /> <br /> In the competitive field of streaming media, broadcasters and OTT service providers face the crucial task of ensuring ads are not only inserted correctly but also tracked and monitored effectively to enhance viewer engagement and increase revenue generation. This requires meticulous attention from the initial creation of the ad signals to their final display to audiences. There are several key strategies and monitoring techniques broadcasters and OTT service providers can embrace, including dynamic ad insertion (DAI).<br /> <br /> <b>Creation and Integrity of Ad Signals<br /> </b>Ad insertion starts with the creation of ad signals. Cues are integrated into the video stream to indicate precise ad insertion points. Employing standardized SCTE-35 markers ensures compatibility across different platforms and devices, facilitating a smoother ad insertion process. This step is critical during encoding and transcoding processes to maintain signal integrity, and avoid disruptions that could impact ad delivery and viewer experiences.<br /> <br /> <b>Ad Insertion Complexity in Video Streaming <br /> </b>In a typical streaming workflow, video goes through decoding and transcoding processes. Two different standards — SCTE-35 and SCTE-104 — are used, depending on where broadcasters and OTT service providers are at in the video content preparation stage. For pre-compression, SCTE 104 is used. In a transport stream, the SCTE-35 spec is followed, and in HLS streams these markers are present in the manifest file. It is important to confirm and perform conformance checks at various stages. <br /> <br /> <b>End-to-End DAI Monitoring With a Unified Dashboard<br /> </b>To effectively manage and streamline monitoring processes, an end-to-end DAI monitoring system with a single dashboard is invaluable. This system should provide:<br /> <br /> • <b>Complete trail of DAI markers</b>: A report of DAI markers from pre-transcode stages through to the origin is necessary to ensure all markers are preserved and propagated correctly throughout media workflows.<br /> • <b>Consolidated DAI reports</b>: These should cover KPI’s such as average ad break durations, intervals between ads, and ad policy compliance, enabling the optimization of ad placements based on detailed analytics.<br /> • <b>Comparison of ad schedules</b>: The dashboard should allow for the comparison of externally supplied ad scheduling information with the DAI markers received in the content, ensuring alignment and consistency.<br /> • <b>Alerts for DAI marker propagation issues</b>: Automated alerts for issues in the propagation of DAI markers across the media workflow help quickly identify and rectify problems, preventing potential revenue loss and negative viewer experiences.<br /> • <b>Support for DAI monitoring post-SSAI</b>: After server-side ad insertion, it’s vital to monitor DAI. Using segment URL identifiers helps detect when ads start and end, ensuring ad playback aligns with the intended content.<br /> • <b>Monitoring of pre-roll DAI markers</b>: This step is crucial for ensuring that these initial ads are inserted correctly as they set the stage for viewer engagement.<br /> • <b>Preservation of manifests containing DAI markers</b>: Saving all manifests that contain DAI markers is important for historical data analysis and troubleshooting, allowing past streams to be revisited for compliance verification and optimization.<br /> <br /> <br /> <b>Benefits for FAST Channel Providers<br /> </b>FAST channel providers, in particular, benefit from multi-point monitoring for several reasons. First, monitoring allows for quality control. Monitoring at multiple points enables the rapid identification and rectifying of quality issues or disruptions in ad playback, ensuring a high-quality viewer experience that is crucial for retaining audiences in a free-to-view model.<br /> <br /> In addition, continuous monitoring ensures all ads are inserted correctly and are fully viewable by the audience, directly impacting revenue streams which are solely ad-based.<br /> Furthermore, for advertising models, especially in regulated markets, proving that ads were delivered as agreed upon with advertisers is crucial. Multipoint monitoring provides the necessary logs and data trails to meet these compliance requirements.<br /> <br /> <b>Conclusion<br /> </b>For broadcasters and OTT service providers, especially those managing FAST channels, implementing robust ad insertion strategies alongside advanced multipoint monitoring ensures effective ad placements and increased operational efficiency. These strategies not only help secure revenue streams but also enhance the viewing experience.
