I do not know<MH3045> the LORD<MH3068>, and besides<MH1571>, I will not let<MH7971> Israel<MH3478> go<MH7971>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559>, “The God<MH430> of the Hebrews<MH5680> has met<MH7122> with us. Please<MH4994>, let us go<MH1980> a three<MH7969> days’<MH3117> journey<MH1870> into the wilderness<MH4057b> so that we may sacrifice<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>, otherwise<MH6435> He will strike<MH6293> us with plague<MH1698> or<MH176> with the sword<MH2719>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> said<MH559> to them, “Moses<MH4872> and Aaron<MH175>, why<MH4100> do you let<MH6544a> the people<MH5971a> neglect<MH6544a> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>work<MH4639>? Get<MH1980> <i>back</i> to your labors<MH5450>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Again Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559>, “Look<MH2005>, the people<MH5971a> of the land<MH776> are now<MH6258> many<MH7227a>, and you would have them cease<MH7673a> from their labors<MH5450>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the same<MH1931> day<MH3117> Pharaoh<MH6547> commanded<MH6680> the taskmasters<MH5065> over the people<MH5971a> and their foremen<MH7860>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“You are no<MH3808> longer<MH3254> to give<MH5414> the people<MH5971a> straw<MH8401> to make<MH3835b> bricks<MH3835b> as previously<MH8543, 8032a>; have them go<MH1980> and gather<MH7197a> straw<MH8401> for themselves<MH1992a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But you shall impose<MH7760> on them the quota<MH4971> of bricks<MH3843> which<MH834> they were making<MH6213a> before<MH8543, 8032a>; you are not to reduce<MH1639> any<MH4480> of it. Because<MH3588> they are lazy<MH7503>, for that<MH3651> reason<MH3651> they cry<MH6817> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>out<MH6817>, ‘Let us go<MH1980> and sacrifice<MH2076> to our God<MH430>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Let the labor<MH5656> be<MH3513> heavier<MH3513> on the men<MH376>, and have them work<MH6213a> at it so that they will pay<MH8159> no<MH408> attention<MH8159> to false<MH8267> words<MH1697>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So the taskmasters<MH5065> of the people<MH5971a> and their foremen<MH7860> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and spoke<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, saying<MH559>, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> Pharaoh<MH6547> says<MH559>: ‘I am not going to give<MH5414> you <i>any</i> straw<MH8401>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>You go<MH1980>, get<MH3947> straw<MH8401> for yourselves wherever<MH4480, 834> you can find<MH4672> <i>it;</i> but none<MH369> of your labor<MH5656> will be reduced<MH1639>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So the people<MH5971a> scattered<MH6327a> through all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> to gather<MH7197a> stubble<MH7179> for straw<MH8401>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And the taskmasters<MH5065> pressed<MH213> them, saying<MH559>, “Complete<MH3615> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>work<MH4639> quota<MH4639>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span><i>your</i> daily<MH3117> amount<MH1697, 3117>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> when <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>you had<MH1961> straw<MH8401>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Moreover, the foremen<MH7860> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, whom<MH834> Pharaoh’s<MH6547> taskmasters<MH5065> had set<MH7760> over<MH5921> them, were beaten<MH5221> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>and asked<MH559>, “Why<MH4069> have you not completed<MH3615> your required<MH2706> task<MH2706> of making<MH3835b> bricks<MH3835b> either<MH1571> yesterday<MH8543> or<MH1571> today<MH3117>, as before<MH8543, 8032a>?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the foremen<MH7860> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> came<MH935> and cried<MH6817> out<MH6817> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, saying<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> do you deal<MH6213a> this<MH3541> way<MH3541> with your servants<MH5650>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>There<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> straw<MH8401> given<MH5414> to your servants<MH5650>, yet they keep saying<MH559> to us, ‘Make<MH6213a> bricks<MH3843>!’ And behold<MH2009>, your servants<MH5650> are being beaten<MH5221>; but it is the fault<MH2398> of your <i>own</i> people<MH5971a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, “You are lazy<MH7503>, <i>very</i> lazy<MH7503>; for<MH5921> that<MH5921, 3651> reason<MH5921, 3651> you say<MH559>, ‘Let us go<MH1980> <i>and</i> sacrifice<MH2076> to the LORD<MH3068>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So go<MH1980> now<MH6258> <i>and</i> work<MH5647>; for you will be given<MH5414> no<MH3808> straw<MH8401>, but you must deliver<MH5414> the quota<MH8506> of bricks<MH3843>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The foremen<MH7860> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> that they were in trouble<MH7451b>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>since they were told<MH559>, “You must not reduce<MH1639> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>your daily<MH3117> amount<MH1697, 3117> of bricks<MH3843>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When they left<MH3318> Pharaoh’s<MH6547> presence<MH4480, 854>, they met<MH6293> Moses<MH4872> and Aaron<MH175> as they were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>waiting<MH5324> for them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And they said<MH559> to them, “May the LORD<MH3068> look<MH7200> upon you and judge<MH8199> <i>you,</i> because<MH834> you have made<MH887> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>us repulsive<MH887, 7381b> in Pharaoh’s<MH6547> sight<MH5869> and in the sight<MH5869> of his servants<MH5650>, to put<MH5414> a sword<MH2719> in their hand<MH3027> to kill<MH2026> us!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> returned<MH7725> to the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, “Lord<MH136>, why<MH4100> have You brought<MH7489a> harm<MH7489a> to this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>?
