In October 2024, the company <a href="https://labsoflatvia.com/en/news/origin-secures-4-million-euros-in-pre-seed-funding" rel="noopener" target="_blank">announced the closing of its €4 million funding round</a>, consisting of venture capital as well as EU grants and support from the Latvian Ministry of Defense.</h2> <div class="article__body"> <p>The <a href="https://labsoflatvia.com/en/news/how-i-raised-origin-robotics-on-securing-latvias-largest-funding-round-of-2024" target="_blank">Labs of Latvia</a> business and technology portal sat down with Agris Ķipurs, Origin’s co-founder & CEO, to learn more about this investment and how the company secured it.</p> <h2>An unconventional approach</h2> <p>Origin develops advanced autonomous unmanned aerial weapons systems to enhance the capabilities of Europe and NATO allies. Its flagship product BEAK – a man-portable Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) – is built for rapid deployment and high-precision attacks in the field. BEAK is bringing high-tech aerial strike capabilities directly to the infantry level, empowering small units with firepower previously reserved for larger, more complex platforms. </p> <p></p><div class="note align-left"> <div> <p class="note__heading">Origin's origin</p> <p>Fact sheet</p> <p>Company founded: March 2022</p> <p>Latest funding round: €4M raised from August 2022 to October 2024</p> <p>Funding process duration: 3 months to attract the first tranche of funding and 4 months to attract the second tranche</p> <p>Funding round stage: Pre-seed</p> <p>Investors: Lead investors – Change Ventures and Silicon Roundabout Ventures</p> </div> </div> <p>When starting their fundraising journey, Origin didn’t have a physical product to demonstrate, plus the journey began before the company was even properly launched. Agris explains:</p> <blockquote> <p>“We raised basically on a napkin. We knew that we needed more funding than what we could invest ourselves. So, before starting, we wanted to make sure that we had external support as well. We knew the first milestones that we wanted to achieve with that money. So we decided to raise before we even got going.”</p> </blockquote> <p>The purpose of the funding round was to build that first product and reach a place where the team would be able to start selling. Agris and Origin’s co-founder & CTO Ilja Nevdahs already had a team of seven ready to hit the ground running, and several more people in mind to invite to join the company as soon as the money was raised. </p> <p>Origin’s founders raised their pre-seed round in two phases – the first tranche of €1.3M in August 2022 and then a year later, the second tranche of €1.1M. Besides equity funding, Origin also added €1.6 million in EU grants and support from the Latvian Ministry of Defence, closing a total €4M in financing.</p> <h2>Relationships and reputation </h2> <p>So, what was Origin’s strategy for fundraising before having a product or a team? Agris tells us that it happened primarily thanks to the founders’ prior experience and track record, including successful previous ventures with some of the investors. In the few cases in which investors were unfamiliar with the founders, warm introductions and positive referrals from trusted connections played a crucial role in securing investment.</p> <p>Having successfully raised capital in previous ventures, Agris was confident in their ability to secure funding for this project. Given the team’s experience, existing relationships with potential investors, and the urgency of the situation following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, they were confident about their case and knew “it was just a matter of doing it”.</p> <p>According to Agris, the specific product idea itself had minimal impact on securing investment. While the company’s focus on the unmanned space was clear, investors were more interested in the founders’ vision and ability to execute rather than scrutinizing the specific product concept at that early stage.</p> <p>Knowing that institutional investors rarely participate in funding rounds at this early stage, Agris did not pursue that avenue initially, and the initial funding round was primarily secured from individual investors. Subsequently, a second tranche of funding included participation from several institutional investors. This later round occurred after the company had achieved early traction, reducing perceived risk. Consequently, the terms of the second tranche differed from the first, with a higher cap for investors participating in the later stage. Both funding rounds were secured through convertible notes.</p> <blockquote> <p>“We set our own terms for the investment. It was essentially a ‘take it or leave it’ proposition. We didn’t negotiate with individual investors; we presented the opportunity and the terms along with the other investors involved. Interested parties were then invited to participate at their desired investment level, and we accommodated smaller check sizes as well.”</p> </blockquote> <p>The second phase of the funding round took a little longer than the first. Initially, Origin prioritized securing investment from Latvia-based angel investors, without going beyond the country’s borders. However, a few international investors joined the round organically through introductions from existing Latvian investors.</p> <h2>Prioritize investors with tech expertise</h2> <p>In their talks with potential investors, Origin’s founders discussed the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare, particularly for smaller nations defending against larger adversaries. They emphasized the significant technological hurdles facing first-time entrepreneurs in this challenging industry. Origin highlighted their team’s unique ability to push the boundaries of unmanned systems technology, convincing investors that their venture was worthy of support.</p> <p>The chosen investment tactic was Safe Notes from Y Combinator – a standard investment instrument used in early-stage funding rounds. Initially, the investment is considered a loan, as it avoids setting a company valuation upfront, allowing for greater flexibility in early-stage funding. Subsequently, the loan converts into equity at a discount to the price per share in a future priced equity round, offering a price advantage to early investors. To further protect these early investors, a cap is typically included, setting a maximum valuation for their investment and safeguarding against excessive dilution in the event of significant company growth.</p> <p>Based on past experience, Agris does not rely heavily on investors for technology or operational value addition, believing that investors primarily seek high returns rather than active involvement. That said, he prefers to work with investors who have a proven track record of investments in technology-focused startups. He explains:</p> <blockquote> <p>“An investor who does not really understand what they are investing in might end up consuming a lot of your time with concerns, questions, suggestions, and ideas that are not necessarily needed or relevant.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Agris also admits that disagreements with investors are normal and constructive criticism is valuable. While it’s healthy that someone challenges your assumptions and provokes reflection, it’s important to maintain a healthy level of engagement. “What you don’t want is engaging with first-time tech investors whose questions can be time-consuming and may not always provide the most insightful feedback.”</p> <h2>Keep investors in the loop</h2> <p>Agris shares that at his previous startup, AirDog, he prioritized maintaining open communication with investors, and providing regular updates on successes and challenges. He points out:</p> <blockquote> <p>“When things aren’t going well, founders sometimes feel ashamed or hesitant to share this with investors, thinking that they only want to hear from us when we accomplish something. This is particularly true in our region. I think it’s equally – if not more – important to keep them in the loop during challenging times.”</p> </blockquote> <p>By demonstrating resilience and a proactive approach to overcoming obstacles, founders can strengthen their relationships with investors and increase their chances of securing future funding rounds.</p> <p>Agris’ final advice to founders is to place primary focus on achieving traction. “Fundraising is one of the toughest challenges a founder faces. It’s a project in itself, and it’s always difficult, especially without impressive traction. That’s why I’d recommend always prioritising building traction. \u0136ipurs, Origin\u2019s co-founder & CEO, to learn more about this investment and how the company secured it. An unconventional approach Origin develops advanced autonomous unmanned aerial weapons systems to enhance the capabilities of Europe and NATO allies. Its flagship product BEAK \u2013 a man-portable Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) \u2013 is built for rapid deployment and high-precision attacks in the field. BEAK is bringing high-tech aerial strike capabilities directly to the infantry level, empowering small units with firepower previously reserved for larger, more complex platforms. Origin's origin Fact sheet Company founded: March 2022 Latest funding round: \u20ac4M raised from August 2022 to October 2024 Funding process duration: 3 months to attract the first tranche of funding and 4 months to attract the second tranche Funding round stage: Pre-seed Investors: Lead investors \u2013 Change Ventures and Silicon Roundabout Ventures When starting their fundraising journey, Origin didn\u2019t have a physical product to demonstrate, plus the journey began before the company was even properly launched. Agris explains: \u201cWe raised basically on a napkin. We knew that we needed more funding than what we could invest ourselves. So, before starting, we wanted to make sure that we had external support as well. We knew the first milestones that we wanted to achieve with that money. So we decided to raise before we even got going.\u201d The purpose of the funding round was to build that first product and reach a place where the team would be able to start selling. Agris and Origin\u2019s co-founder & CTO Ilja Nevdahs already had a team of seven ready to hit the ground running, and several more people in mind to invite to join the company as soon as the money was raised. Origin\u2019s founders raised their pre-seed round in two phases \u2013 the first tranche of \u20ac1.3M in August 2022 and then a year later, the second tranche of \u20ac1.1M. Besides equity funding, Origin also added \u20ac1.6 million in EU grants and support from the Latvian Ministry of Defence, closing a total \u20ac4M in financing. Relationships and reputation So, what was Origin\u2019s strategy for fundraising before having a product or a team? Agris tells us that it happened primarily thanks to the founders\u2019 prior experience and track record, including successful previous ventures with some of the investors. In the few cases in which investors were unfamiliar with the founders, warm introductions and positive referrals from trusted connections played a crucial role in securing investment. Having successfully raised capital in previous ventures, Agris was confident in their ability to secure funding for this project. Given the team\u2019s experience, existing relationships with potential investors, and the urgency of the situation following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, they were confident about their case and knew \u201cit was just a matter of doing it\u201d. According to Agris, the specific product idea itself had minimal impact on securing investment. While the company\u2019s focus on the unmanned space was clear, investors were more interested in the founders\u2019 vision and ability to execute rather than scrutinizing the specific product concept at that early stage. Knowing that institutional investors rarely participate in funding rounds at this early stage, Agris did not pursue that avenue initially, and the initial funding round was primarily secured from individual investors. Subsequently, a second tranche of funding included participation from several institutional investors. This later round occurred after the company had achieved early traction, reducing perceived risk. Consequently, the terms of the second tranche differed from the first, with a higher cap for investors participating in the later stage. Both funding rounds were secured through convertible notes. \u201cWe set our own terms for the investment. It was essentially a \u2018take it or leave it\u2019 proposition. We didn\u2019t negotiate with individual investors; we presented the opportunity and the terms along with the other investors involved. Interested parties were then invited to participate at their desired investment level, and we accommodated smaller check sizes as well.\u201d The second phase of the funding round took a little longer than the first. Initially, Origin prioritized securing investment from Latvia-based angel investors, without going beyond the country\u2019s borders. However, a few international investors joined the round organically through introductions from existing Latvian investors. Prioritize investors with tech expertise In their talks with potential investors, Origin\u2019s founders discussed the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare, particularly for smaller nations defending against larger adversaries. They emphasized the significant technological hurdles facing first-time entrepreneurs in this challenging industry. Origin highlighted their team\u2019s unique ability to push the boundaries of unmanned systems technology, convincing investors that their venture was worthy of support. The chosen investment tactic was Safe Notes from Y Combinator \u2013 a standard investment instrument used in early-stage funding rounds. Initially, the investment is considered a loan, as it avoids setting a company valuation upfront, allowing for greater flexibility in early-stage funding. Subsequently, the loan converts into equity at a discount to the price per share in a future priced equity round, offering a price advantage to early investors. To further protect these early investors, a cap is typically included, setting a maximum valuation for their investment and safeguarding against excessive dilution in the event of significant company growth. Based on past experience, Agris does not rely heavily on investors for technology or operational value addition, believing that investors primarily seek high returns rather than active involvement. That said, he prefers to work with investors who have a proven track record of investments in technology-focused startups. He explains: \u201cAn investor who does not really understand what they are investing in might end up consuming a lot of your time with concerns, questions, suggestions, and ideas that are not necessarily needed or relevant.\u201d Agris also admits that disagreements with investors are normal and constructive criticism is valuable. While it\u2019s healthy that someone challenges your assumptions and provokes reflection, it\u2019s important to maintain a healthy level of engagement. \u201cWhat you don\u2019t want is engaging with first-time tech investors whose questions can be time-consuming and may not always provide the most insightful feedback.\u201d Keep investors in the loop Agris shares that at his previous startup, AirDog, he prioritized maintaining open communication with investors, and providing regular updates on successes and challenges. He points out: \u201cWhen things aren\u2019t going well, founders sometimes feel ashamed or hesitant to share this with investors, thinking that they only want to hear from us when we accomplish something. This is particularly true in our region. I think it\u2019s equally \u2013 if not more \u2013 important to keep them in the loop during challenging times.\u201d By demonstrating resilience and a proactive approach to overcoming obstacles, founders can strengthen their relationships with investors and increase their chances of securing future funding rounds. Agris\u2019 final advice to founders is to place primary focus on achieving traction. \u201cFundraising is one of the toughest challenges a founder faces. It\u2019s a project in itself, and it\u2019s always difficult, especially without impressive traction. That\u2019s why I\u2019d recommend always prioritising building traction.
