You did that to yourself.”</em></p> <p><em>- “If I do a hysterectomy on you, you will 100% die on that table.”</em></p> <p>Hello, I'm Wendy. I want you to let the above statements sink in for a moment and try to imagine how anyone could be so hurtful. You might think that these statements came from rude, ignorant strangers. They didn’t. These words came from people that I trusted, people that were supposed to help me. They came from healthcare professionals.</p> <p>Let's take a closer look at each of these statements.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>“She’s just fat and lazy and doesn’t want to put the work into being healthy.”</strong></p> <p>This statement was made by a cardiologist. I had spent the day having chest pain. By late afternoon the chest pain was unbearable so my best friend drove me to the clinic. The doctor on call was amazing; I know that he was paying attention and listening. Recognizing his limitations, he gave me some medications and decided that he wanted me to go to the hospital by ambulance.</p> <p>Once we got to the hospital, we sat for almost 4 hours, waiting to see a doctor. The ambulance staff had to wait with me. When I was finally seen, I was told that a cardiologist would see me soon. So I waited. And waited. And when that was done I waited some more. The following day I woke up feeling better but had still not seen the cardiologist. They told me that they had forgotten about me. They said that they were booked up but that I would be seen as soon as they had an opening. I was finally seen around 3pm that day.</p> <p>They put me on the treadmill to do a stress test. When they increased the incline on the treadmill, I had to tell them that there was no possible way that I could continue. My lower back was screaming at me and my left hip was throbbing. I have always had problems with my left hip. It is not weight related because even when I was a lower weight, I had problems with that hip. That is when the cardiologist made the comment that he wanted the nurse to “put a note in her chart that there is nothing wrong with her heart. She is just fat and lazy and doesn’t want to put the work into being healthy.” Just think about that for a minute. Think about how it would feel to make yourself vulnerable to someone that you don’t know; to put your blind faith in them and to trust that if there is something wrong, they will help you. You are safe with them. Now I want you to think about what it would feel like to hear words like that flung at you. Each word is a weapon. To this day I remember those words and I hate myself. It takes a lot of effort to reassure myself and overcome that experience.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>“No man will ever love you if you don’t lose weight and take better care of yourself.”</strong></p> <p>Now, you would think that this advice came from someone that I sought out for advice about my love life. But it wasn’t. This was the ethically sound medical advice given to me by… wait for it… an allergy specialist! At the time I was already engaged to my husband, and I knew that he loved me no matter what I look like or what size I am. Even on the days that I feel like a mess, Brian has always loved me. When I corrected the doctor and told him that I was engaged, he laughed and said, “he is obviously desperate to get married then because no self-respecting man would want you at the weight you are.” At that point I stood up to walk out the door, I was shaking and crying so badly that I had to stop by my workplace to calm down. When I told a couple of my co-workers what had happened, they said that I should report him, but I refused. I truly believed that the comment he made was my fault. If I wasn’t so fat he wouldn’t have talked to me like that. I know now that I was so wrong, and that no one deserves to be treated as less.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>“I don’t know why you are sitting in my office crying. I didn’t make you fat. You did that to yourself.”</strong></p> <p>This comment came from a plastic surgeon. I went to her with hopes of getting a breast reduction. I was sitting on her exam table, naked from the waist up. Vulnerable. Scared. And perhaps most importantly, I was in pain. My back was extremely sore. As soon as she walked in I knew that the appointment wasn’t going to go well. I could read it in her face. She sat down in front of me, pinched both of my nipples in her hands and proceeded to lift my breasts by the nipples. I am a K cup so there was a lot of weight being put on my nipples. She held them like that for about 10 seconds, dropped them and told me that there was no way that I could be a candidate for surgery unless I lost at least 30% of my body weight. And even then she would only think about it. When I started to cry, she looked me in the eye and stated: “I don’t know why you are sitting in my office crying, I didn’t make you fat. You did that to yourself.” When I started crying even harder, my husband, who is the kindest person that you will ever meet, stood up and told her to leave the room. She turned at the door and said, “Put your shirt back on and take a few minutes to pull yourself together. When I come back into this room, you had better be gone.” Again, I felt like it was my fault that she talked to me like that. I honestly believed that I was a disgusting monster. I believed that I deserved it. And again, I was so wrong.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>“If I do a hysterectomy on you, you will 100% die on that table.”</strong></p> <p>This comment was made by a gynaecologist. I first got my period at age 9 and always had horrible cramps and abnormally heavy bleeding. I was weak and exhausted. I had been to this gynaecologist before and had high hopes that, since she had worked with me in the past, she would be willing to work with me again. By this point I knew that I wasn’t going to have children and I was okay with that. When she looked at me and explained that there was a point during the operation that she would have to tilt the table and that the weight of my breasts would “definitely kill” me, I felt deflated. I felt hopeless. I felt fat and useless. At that moment I decided that I was done. I decided that my life wasn’t worth saving so I was going to do what I wanted and eat what I wanted because I was beyond help. Here’s the thing though. I wasn’t beyond help. I wasn’t worth giving up on and I wasn’t a waste of flesh.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>I am currently working hard every single day to manage my obesity and keep my diabetes under control because I am worth the fight. I am worth the space that I occupy. I have a lot to offer this world. I am doing it because for the first time in my adult life, I love myself and I want to be here for the people that love me. I am here because I DESERVE to be here. I have been lucky enough to have an amazing family doctor, an amazing cardiologist, and an amazing team of diabetes experts join me on my journey. If there is just one thing that I want all of you to learn from me, it’s this: people living with obesity are valuable members of society and deserve to be treated as such. Doctors take an oath to do no harm. Every one of the above statements was harmful. No one deserves to feel like I did.
