OWL is a portfolio company of Irving-based Natural Gas Partners, a private equity firm. </p><p>“OWL handles the full water cycle for E&P; companies,” said <a href="dallas/search/results?q=Chris Cooper">Chris Cooper</a>, CEO of OWL. “We’re primarily focused on the Permian but we’re looking to expand to other basins.</p> <p>The company, founded in April, is growing fast, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20141229121255/http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2014/07/15/dallas-based-oil-field-water-company-acquires.html">having just done its second acquisition earlier this month</a>. In many ways, this company could shake up the water industry in a region that’s parched by years of extreme drought conditions.</p><p>That starts with recycling water, which, Cooper says, is still a relatively small part of his business.</p><p>“We’re big supporters of water recycling,” Cooper said. “As that becomes more cost effective and the technology advances we expect it to be a bigger part of the business in the future. As a major gatherer of produced water and flowback, we’re ideally set up to help with that.”</p><p>Why do companies do it?</p><p>“It’s twofold,” Cooper said. “They do it because they need the fresh water back because there’s a water scarcity issue. It’s expensive. And second for environmental reasons.”</p><p>The average shale well could use 2 million or more gallons of water. Much of that water comes back to the surface during the flowback process.
