So be strong<MH2388>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>prove<MH1961> yourself a man<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Do<MH8104> your duty<MH4931> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, to walk<MH1980> in His ways<MH1870>, to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>keep<MH8104> His statutes<MH2708>, His commandments<MH4687>, His ordinances<MH4941>, and His testimonies<MH5715>, according to what is written<MH3789> in the Law<MH8451> of Moses<MH4872>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> you may succeed<MH7919a> in all<MH3605> that you do<MH6213a> and wherever<MH3605, 834, 8033> you turn<MH6437>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>so<MH4616> that<MH4616> the LORD<MH3068> may fulfill<MH6965> His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>promise<MH1697> which<MH834> He spoke<MH1696> regarding<MH5921> me, saying<MH559>, &#8216;If<MH518> your sons<MH1121> are<MH8104> careful<MH8104> about their way<MH1870>, to walk<MH1980> before<MH6440> Me in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>truth<MH571> with all<MH3605> their heart<MH3824> and all<MH3605> their soul<MH5315>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>you shall not be deprived<MH3772> of a man<MH376> to occupy<MH5921> the throne<MH3678> of Israel<MH3478>.&#8217; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>&#8220;Now you yourself<MH859> also<MH1571> know<MH3045> what<MH834> Joab<MH3097> the son<MH1121> of Zeruiah<MH6870> did<MH6213a> to me, what<MH834> he did<MH6213a> to the two<MH8147> commanders<MH8269> of the armies<MH6635> of Israel<MH3478>, to Abner<MH74> the son<MH1121> of Ner<MH5369> and to Amasa<MH6021> the son<MH1121> of Jether<MH3500>, whom he killed<MH2026>; he also <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>shed<MH7760> the blood<MH1818> of war<MH4421> in peace<MH7965>. And he put<MH5414> the blood<MH1818> of war<MH4421> on his belt<MH2290b> that was on his waist<MH4975>, and on his sandals<MH5275> that were on his feet<MH7272>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So act<MH6213a> as your wisdom<MH2451> <i>dictates,</i> and do not let his gray<MH7872> hair<MH7872> go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Sheol<MH7585> in peace<MH7965>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>However, show<MH6213a> kindness<MH2617a> to the sons<MH1121> of Barzillai<MH1271> the Gileadite<MH1569>, and let them be among those who eat<MH398> at your table<MH7979>; for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>they assisted<MH7126> me when I fled<MH1272> from Absalom<MH53> your brother<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And behold<MH2009>, <i>you have</i> with you Shimei<MH8096> the son<MH1121> of Gera<MH1617> the Benjaminite<MH1145>, of Bahurim<MH980>; now it was he who cursed<MH7043> me with a painful<MH4834> curse<MH7045> on the day<MH3117> I went<MH1980> to Mahanaim<MH4266>. But when he came<MH3381> down<MH3381> to meet<MH7122> me at the Jordan<MH3383>, I swore<MH7650> to him by the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;I will not put<MH4191> you to<MH4191> death<MH4191> with the sword<MH2719>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But now<MH6258> do not leave<MH5352> him unpunished<MH5352>, for you are a wise<MH2450> man<MH376>; and you will know<MH3045> what<MH834> to do<MH6213a> to him, and you will bring<MH3381> his gray<MH7872> hair<MH7872> down<MH3381> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Sheol<MH7585> with blood<MH1818>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Death of David</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> with his fathers<MH1>, and he was buried<MH6912> in the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now the days<MH3117> that David<MH1732> reigned<MH4427a> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478> <i>were</i> forty<MH705> years<MH8141>: in Hebron<MH2275a> he reigned<MH4427a> for seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>, and in Jerusalem<MH3389> he reigned<MH4427a> for thirty-three<MH7970, 7969> years<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Solomon<MH8010> sat<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of his father<MH1> David<MH1732>, and his kingdom<MH4438> was firmly<MH3966> established<MH3559>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now Adonijah<MH138> the son<MH1121> of Haggith<MH2294> came<MH935> to Bathsheba<MH1339> the mother<MH517> of Solomon<MH8010>. So she said<MH559>, &#8220;Do you come<MH935> peacefully<MH7965>?&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;Peacefully<MH7965>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;I have something<MH1697> <i>to say</i> to you.&#8221; And she said<MH559>, &#8220;Speak<MH1696>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So he said<MH559>, &#8220;You yourself<MH859> know<MH3045> that the kingdom<MH4410> was mine and that all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>intended<MH7760, 6440> for me to be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>; however, the kingdom<MH4410> has turned<MH5437> around<MH5437> and become<MH1961> my brother&#8217;s<MH251>, for it was his from the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> I am making<MH7592> one<MH259> request<MH7596> of you; do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>refuse<MH7725> me.&#8221; And she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Speak<MH1696>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> speak<MH559> to Solomon<MH8010> the king<MH4428>&#8212;for he will not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>refuse<MH7725> you&#8212;that he may give<MH5414> me Abishag<MH49> the Shunammite<MH7767> as a wife<MH802>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Bathsheba<MH1339> said<MH559>, &#8220;Very<MH2896a> well<MH2896a>; I will speak<MH1696> to the king<MH4428> for you.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Adonijah Executed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So Bathsheba<MH1339> went<MH935> to King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010>, to speak<MH1696> to him for Adonijah<MH138>. And the king<MH4428> stood<MH6965> to meet<MH7122> her, bowed<MH2331c> to her, and sat<MH3427> on his throne<MH3678>; then he had a throne<MH3678> set<MH7760> up<MH7760> for the king&#8217;s<MH4428> mother<MH517>, and she sat<MH3427> on his right<MH3225>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559>, &#8220;I am making<MH7592> one<MH259> small<MH6996a> request<MH7596> of you; do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>refuse<MH7725> me.&#8221; And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Ask<MH7592>, my mother<MH517>, for I will not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>refuse<MH7725> you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So she said<MH559>, &#8220;Let Abishag<MH49> the Shunammite<MH7767> be given<MH5414> to Adonijah<MH138> your brother<MH251> as a wife<MH802>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> answered<MH6030a> and said<MH559> to his mother<MH517>, &#8220;And why<MH4100> are you requesting<MH7592> Abishag<MH49> the Shunammite<MH7767> for Adonijah<MH138>? Request<MH7592> for him the kingdom<MH4410> as well&#8212;since<MH3588> he is my older<MH1419> brother<MH251>&#8212;for him, for Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>, and for Joab<MH3097> the son<MH1121> of Zeruiah<MH6870>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> swore<MH7650> by the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;May God<MH430> do<MH6213a> so<MH3541> to me and more<MH3254> so<MH3541>, if<MH3588> Adonijah<MH138> has not spoken<MH1696> this<MH2088> word<MH1697> against his own <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>life<MH5315>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, as the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> has established<MH3559> me and set<MH3427> me on the throne<MH3678> of David<MH1732> my father<MH1>, and has made<MH6213a> me a house<MH1004> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>promised<MH1696>, Adonijah<MH138> certainly<MH3588> shall be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> today<MH3117>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> sent<MH7971> <i>the order</i> by Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>; and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>struck<MH6293> him so that he died<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then to Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548> the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> to Anathoth<MH6068> to your own field<MH7704>, for you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>deserve<MH376> to die<MH4194>; but I will not put<MH4191> you to<MH4191> death<MH4191> at this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>time<MH3117>, because<MH3588> you carried<MH5375> the ark<MH727> of the Lord<MH136> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>GOD<MH3068> before<MH6440> my father<MH1> David<MH1732>, and because<MH3588> you were afflicted<MH6031a> in everything<MH3605> with which<MH834> my father<MH1> was afflicted<MH6031a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So Solomon<MH8010> dismissed<MH1644> Abiathar<MH54> from being<MH1961> priest<MH3548> to the LORD<MH3068>, to fulfill<MH4390> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, which<MH834> He had spoken<MH1696> regarding<MH5921> the house<MH1004> of Eli<MH5941> in Shiloh<MH7887>. <p class="hdg">Joab Executed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Now the news<MH8052> came<MH935> to Joab<MH3097> because<MH3588> Joab<MH3097> had followed<MH5186, 310> Adonijah<MH138>, though he had not followed<MH310, 5186> Absalom<MH53>. So Joab<MH3097> fled<MH5127> to the tent<MH168> of the LORD<MH3068> and took<MH2388> hold<MH2388> of the horns<MH7161> of the altar<MH4196>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And it was reported<MH5046> to King<MH4428> Solomon<MH8010> that Joab<MH3097> had fled<MH5127> to the tent<MH168> of the LORD<MH3068>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>was beside<MH681a> the altar<MH4196>. Then Solomon<MH8010> sent<MH7971> Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>execute<MH6293> him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So Benaiah<MH1141> came<MH935> to the tent<MH168> of the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> has said<MH559>: &#8216;Come<MH3318> out<MH3318>.&#8217;&#8221; But he said<MH559>, &#8220;No<MH3808>, for I will die<MH4191> here<MH6311>.&#8221; So Benaiah<MH1141> brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> word<MH1697> to the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> Joab<MH3097> spoke<MH1696>, and so<MH3541> he answered<MH6030a> me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Do<MH6213a> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> he has spoken<MH1696>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>execute<MH6293> him and bury<MH6912> him, so that you may remove<MH5493> from<MH5493> me and from my father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004> the blood<MH1818> which<MH834> Joab<MH3097> shed<MH8210> without<MH2600> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>justification<MH2600>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> will return<MH7725> his blood<MH1818> on his own head<MH7218>, because<MH834> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>struck<MH6293> two<MH8147> men<MH376> more<MH4480> righteous<MH6662> and better<MH2896a> than<MH4480> he, and killed<MH2026> them with the sword<MH2719>, while my father<MH1> David<MH1732> did not know<MH3045> <i>about it:</i> Abner<MH74> the son<MH1121> of Ner<MH5369>, commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> of Israel<MH3478>, and Amasa<MH6021> the son<MH1121> of Jether<MH3500>, commander<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So their blood<MH1818> shall return<MH7725> on the head<MH7218> of Joab<MH3097> and on the head<MH7218> of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> forever<MH5769>; but for David<MH1732> and his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>, and his house<MH1004> and his throne<MH3678>, may there be peace<MH7965> from the LORD<MH3068> forever<MH5704, 5769>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Then Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>struck<MH6293> him and put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, and he was buried<MH6912> at his own house<MH1004> in the wilderness<MH4057b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> appointed<MH5414> Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> over<MH5921> the army<MH6635> in<MH8478> his place<MH8478>, and the king<MH4428> appointed<MH5414> Zadok<MH6659> the priest<MH3548> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> Abiathar<MH54>. <p class="hdg">Shimei Executed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Now the king<MH4428> sent<MH7971> <i>men</i> and summoned<MH7121> Shimei<MH8096>, and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Build<MH1129> yourself a house<MH1004> in Jerusalem<MH3389> and live<MH3427> there<MH8033>, and do not leave<MH3318> there<MH8033> for any<MH575> <i>other</i> place<MH575>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>For on the day<MH3117> you leave<MH3318> and cross<MH5674a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>brook<MH5158a> Kidron<MH6939>, you will know<MH3045> for<MH3045> certain<MH3045> that you will assuredly<MH4191> die<MH4191>; your blood<MH1818> will be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>on your own head<MH7218>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Shimei<MH8096> then said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;The word<MH1697> is good<MH2896a>. Just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> has spoken<MH1696>, so<MH3651> your servant<MH5650> shall do<MH6213a>.&#8221; So Shimei<MH8096> lived<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389> for many<MH7227a> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>But it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at the end<MH7093> of three<MH7969> years<MH8141>, that two<MH8147> of Shimei&#8217;s<MH8096> servants<MH5650> ran<MH1272> away<MH1272> to Achish<MH397> son<MH1121> of Maacah<MH4601>, king<MH4428> of Gath<MH1661>. And <i>others</i> told<MH5046> Shimei<MH8096>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, your servants<MH5650> are in Gath<MH1661>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Then Shimei<MH8096> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and saddled<MH2280> his donkey<MH2543>, and went<MH1980> to Gath<MH1661> to Achish<MH397>, to search<MH1245> for his servants<MH5650>. And Shimei<MH8096> went<MH1980> and brought<MH935> his servants<MH5650> from Gath<MH1661>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And it was reported<MH5046> to Solomon<MH8010> that Shimei<MH8096> had gone<MH1980> from Jerusalem<MH3389> to Gath<MH1661>, and had returned<MH7725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/2-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> sent<MH7971> <i>men</i> and summoned<MH7121> Shimei<MH8096>, and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Did I not make you swear<MH7650> by the LORD<MH3068>, and solemnly<MH5749b> warn<MH5749b> you, saying<MH559>, &#8216;Know<MH3045> for<MH3045> certain<MH3045> that on the day<MH3117> you depart<MH3318> and go<MH1980> anywhere<MH575>, you shall assuredly<MH4191> die<MH4191>&#8217;?
