Naming in biblical times often carried significant meaning, reflecting circumstances or prophetic insights. This naming also highlights the importance of remembering God's past faithfulness, a recurring theme in Israel's history.<p><b>for Moses had said</b><br>This phrase indicates that the naming of Eliezer was intentional and based on Moses' own testimony. Eliezer had not been previously mentioned by name; but he was probably the son circumcised by Zipporah, as related in ch. 4:25. We learn from <a href="/1_chronicles/23-15.htm">1 Chronicles 23:15-17</a>, that he grew to manhood, and had an only son, Rehabiah, whose descendants were in the time of Solomon very numerous. <span class="cmt_word">For the God of my father, said he, was my help</span>. Eliezer means literally, "My God (is my) help." It would seem that Zipporah, when she circumcised her infant son, omitted to name him; but Moses, before dismissing her, supplied the omission, calling him Eliezer, because God had been his help against the Pharaoh who had sought his life (<a href="/exodus/2-15.htm">Exodus 2:15</a>), and of whose death he had recently had intelligence (<a href="/exodus/4-19.htm">Exodus 4:19</a>). Thus the names of the two sons expressed respectively, the despondency natural to an exile, and the exultant gratitude of one who had just learned that by God's goodness, the term of his banishment was over. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/exodus/18-4.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">The other [son]</span><br /><span class="heb">הָאֶחָ֖ד</span> <span class="translit">(hā·’e·ḥāḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Number - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_259.htm">Strong's 259: </a> </span><span class="str2">United, one, first</span><br /><br /><span class="word">was named</span><br /><span class="heb">וְשֵׁ֥ם</span> <span class="translit">(wə·šêm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8034.htm">Strong's 8034: </a> </span><span class="str2">A name</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Eliezer,</span><br /><span class="heb">אֱלִיעֶ֑זֶר</span> <span class="translit">(’ĕ·lî·‘e·zer)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_461.htm">Strong's 461: </a> </span><span class="str2">Eliezer -- 'God is help', the name of several Israelites, also of a Damascene</span><br /><br /><span class="word">because [Moses had said],</span><br /><span class="heb">כִּֽי־</span> <span class="translit">(kî-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3588.htm">Strong's 3588: </a> </span><span class="str2">A relative conjunction</span><br /><br /><span class="word">“The God</span><br /><span class="heb">אֱלֹהֵ֤י</span> <span class="translit">(’ĕ·lō·hê)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine plural construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_430.htm">Strong's 430: </a> </span><span class="str2">gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlative</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of my father</span><br /><span class="heb">אָבִי֙</span> <span class="translit">(’ā·ḇî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1.htm">Strong's 1: </a> </span><span class="str2">Father</span><br /><br /><span class="word">was my helper</span><br /><span class="heb">בְּעֶזְרִ֔י</span> <span class="translit">(bə·‘ez·rî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b | Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5828.htm">Strong's 5828: </a> </span><span class="str2">A help, helper</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and delivered me</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיַּצִּלֵ֖נִי</span> <span class="translit">(way·yaṣ·ṣi·lê·nî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5337.htm">Strong's 5337: </a> </span><span class="str2">To strip, plunder, deliver oneself, be delivered, snatch away, deliver</span><br /><br /><span class="word">from the sword</span><br /><span class="heb">מֵחֶ֥רֶב</span> <span class="translit">(mê·ḥe·reḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m | Noun - feminine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2719.htm">Strong's 2719: </a> </span><span class="str2">Drought, a cutting instrument, as a, knife, sword</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of Pharaoh.”</span><br /><span class="heb">פַּרְעֹֽה׃</span> <span class="translit">(par·‘ōh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6547.htm">Strong's 6547: </a> </span><span class="str2">Pharaoh -- a title of Egypt kings</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/exodus/18-4.htm">Exodus 18:4 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/exodus/18-4.htm">OT Law: Exodus 18:4 The name of the other was Eliezer (Exo.
