This name is reflective of the quiet and desolate nature often associated with the region and its prophetic implications.

Biblical References:
Dumah is mentioned in several contexts within the Bible, each providing insight into its geographical, genealogical, and prophetic significance.

1. Genealogical Context:
Dumah is listed as one of the sons of Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar. In Genesis 25:14, the Bible states, "Mishma, Dumah, Massa," indicating Dumah as a descendant of Ishmael. This positions Dumah within the broader narrative of the Ishmaelite tribes, who were known to inhabit the Arabian Peninsula.

2. Geographical Context:
Dumah is also identified as a region or settlement. In Isaiah 21:11, the prophet delivers an oracle concerning Dumah: "This is the burden against Dumah: Someone calls to me from Seir, 'Watchman, what is left of the night? Watchman, what is left of the night?'" This passage suggests a location possibly in the vicinity of Edom or Seir, regions south of the Dead Sea, known for their rugged terrain and historical significance.

3. Prophetic Context:
The oracle in Isaiah 21:11-12 is enigmatic and has been the subject of much interpretation. The watchman's response, "Morning is coming, but also the night. If you would inquire, then inquire. Come back yet again," suggests a period of uncertainty and impending judgment. This prophecy may symbolize the transient nature of human endeavors and the ultimate sovereignty of God over nations.

Historical and Cultural Significance:
Dumah, as a descendant of Ishmael, represents one of the many tribes that emerged from Abraham's lineage, fulfilling God's promise to make Ishmael a great nation (Genesis 17:20). The Ishmaelites, including the Dumahites, played a significant role in the trade routes of the ancient Near East, often interacting with the Israelites and other neighboring peoples.

Theological Implications:
The mention of Dumah in the prophetic literature of Isaiah serves as a reminder of God's omniscience and the unfolding of His divine plan. The call to the watchman and the subsequent response highlight the themes of vigilance, anticipation, and the duality of hope and judgment. This reflects the broader biblical narrative of God's justice and mercy, urging believers to remain watchful and faithful.

Conclusion:
While Dumah is not extensively detailed in the biblical text, its inclusion in genealogical, geographical, and prophetic contexts underscores its multifaceted role in the biblical narrative. As a descendant of Ishmael and a subject of prophecy, Dumah serves as a testament to the interconnectedness of the peoples and regions surrounding Israel and the unfolding of God's purposes throughout history.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Dumah
(silence).

A son of Ishmael, most probably the founder of the Ishmaelite tribe of Arabia, and thence the name of the principal place of district inhabited by that tribe. According to the Arabic geographies this son of Ishmael rounded the town of Dumat-el-Jandal, the stone-built Dumah, so called to distinguish it from another Dumah near the Euphrates. The former now bears the name of the Jauf ("belly"), being a depression situated half-way between the head of the Persian Gulf and the head of the gulf of Akaba. Its people in the time of Mohammed were Christians of the tribe of Kelb. It contained a great well from which the palms and crops were irrigated. It has often been visited by European travelers in recent times. See Jour. Royal Geog. Soc., XXIV (1854), 138-58; W. G. Palgrave, Central and Eastern Arabia, chapter ii.
