The BBC Trust will ensure greater transparency of how the BBC does its business and for the first time, the public will have a say in setting the strategic direction of the BBC.</p> <ul class="link-list"> <li><a href="why-the-bbc-trust/index.html">Why the BBC Trust? </a></li> </ul> <h3>Who are the BBC Trustees?</h3> <p>The BBC Trust consists of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and ten members, or "Trustees". Their backgrounds and experience is wide, ranging from broadcasting, regulation, competition, business, the public sector and engagement with the public, to programme-making and journalism. They are appointed by the Queen on advice from ministers following an open <a href="bbc-trust-members/how-members-are-appointed.html">appointments process</a>.</p> <p>There is currently a vacancy on the BBC Trust while the Department for Culture, Media and Sport recruits a new Chairman. The vacancy has been advertised in the national press, as well as on the DCMS and Cabinet Office websites. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2007.</p> <p>The recruitment process is being managed by consultants Odgers Ray & Berndtson on behalf of DCMS. More information, including a job specification and details on how to apply, can be found on their <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20070121140543/http://www.odgers.com/14559">website</a>.</p> <p>Until a new appointment is made, the Vice-Chairman is Acting Chairman. </p> <ul class="link-list"> <li><a href="bbc-trust-members/index.html">Who are the Trust members? </a></li> </ul> <h3>Purpose and role </h3> <p>The purpose of the BBC Trust is to work on behalf of licence fee payers, ensuring the BBC provides high quality output and good value for all UK citizens, and it protects the independence of the BBC. To achieve this, the Trustees must keep in close contact with licence fee payers – being aware of and understanding their expectations of the BBC. They do this via research, direct engagement with the public and through the work of the BBC <a href="audience-councils/index.html">Audience Councils</a>.</p> <p>BBC Trustees are supported in their work by the Trust Unit. </p> <ul class="link-list"> <li><a href="purpose-and-role/index.html">BBC Trust purpose and role </a></li> </ul> <h3>Trust Unit </h3> <p>The Trust Unit provides Trustees with independent and objective advice.
