In biblical context, God is portrayed as the ultimate judge who sees all actions and intentions (Proverbs 15:3). The idea of God seeing and disapproving aligns with His nature as holy and just, as seen in passages like Psalm 11:4-5, where God examines the righteous and the wicked. The disapproval of God is significant because it reflects His standards of righteousness, which are consistent throughout Scripture. This phrase warns against gloating over the downfall of others, as it is contrary to God's character of mercy and justice.
and turn His wrath away from him
This part of the verse suggests a divine response to human attitudes. Theologically, it implies that God's wrath, which is often depicted as a righteous response to sin (Romans 1:18), can be redirected based on human behavior. In the cultural context of ancient Israel, retribution was a common expectation, but this verse challenges that notion by suggesting that God may choose to withhold punishment if He sees inappropriate rejoicing over an enemy's misfortune. This reflects a broader biblical theme of God's mercy and the call for believers to emulate His compassion (Matthew 5:44-45). The turning away of wrath can also be seen as a type of Christ, who through His sacrifice, turns away the wrath of God from sinners (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
Persons / Places / Events
1. The LORD
The central figure in this verse, representing God's omniscience and justice. Nic.,' 2:7. 15, calls ἐπιχαιρεκακία) is a sin in the eyes of God, and calls for punishment. And he turn away his wrath from him; and, as is implied, direct it upon thee. But it seems a mean motive to adduce, if the maxim is taken baldly to mean, "Do not rejoice at your enemy's calamity, lest God relieve him from the evil:" for true charity would wish for such a result. Bode considers "his wrath" to be the enemy's ill will against thee, which God by his grace changes to love, and thou art thus covered with confusion and shame for thy former vindictiveness. But the point is not so much the removal of God's displeasure from the enemy as the punishment of the malignant man, either mentally or materially. To a malignant mind no severer blow could be given than to see a foe recover God's favor and rise from his fall. The moralist then warns the disciple against giving way to this ἐπιχαιρεκακία lest he prepare for himself bitter mortification by having to witness the restoration of the hated one, or by being himself made to suffer that evil which he had rejoiced to see his neighbour experience (comp. Proverbs 17:5, and note there).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
or
פֶּן־ (pen-)
Conjunction
Strong's 6435: Removal, lest

the LORD
יְ֭הוָה (Yah·weh)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 3069: YHWH

will see
יִרְאֶ֣ה (yir·’eh)
Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 7200: To see

and disapprove,
וְרַ֣ע (wə·ra‘)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 7489: To spoil, to make, good for, nothing, bad

and turn His wrath
אַפּֽוֹ׃ (’ap·pōw)
Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singular
Strong's 639: The nose, nostril, the face, a person, ire

away
וְהֵשִׁ֖יב (wə·hê·šîḇ)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular
Strong's 7725: To turn back, in, to retreat, again

from him.
מֵעָלָ֣יו (mê·‘ā·lāw)
Preposition-m | third person masculine singular
Strong's 5921: Above, over, upon, against

Links
Proverbs 24:18 NIV
Proverbs 24:18 NLT
Proverbs 24:18 ESV
Proverbs 24:18 NASB
Proverbs 24:18 KJV

Proverbs 24:18 BibleApps.com
Proverbs 24:18 Biblia Paralela
Proverbs 24:18 Chinese Bible
Proverbs 24:18 French Bible
Proverbs 24:18 Catholic Bible

OT Poetry: Proverbs 24:18 Lest Yahweh see it and it displease (Prov.
