If<MH518> you will redeem<MH1350> <i>it,</i> redeem<MH1350> <i>it;</i> but if<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>not, tell<MH5046> me so that I may know<MH3045>; for there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> except<MH2108> you to redeem<MH1350> <i>it,</i> and I am after<MH310> you.’” And he said<MH559>, “I will redeem<MH1350> <i>it.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Boaz<MH1162> said<MH559>, “On the day<MH3117> you buy<MH7069> the field<MH7704> from the hand<MH3027> of Naomi<MH5281>, you must also acquire<MH7069> Ruth<MH7327> the Moabitess<MH4125>, the widow<MH802> of the deceased<MH4191>, in order to raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> the name<MH8034> of the deceased<MH4191> on his inheritance<MH5159>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the redeemer<MH1350> said<MH559>, “I cannot<MH3201, 3808> redeem<MH1350> <i>it</i> for myself, otherwise<MH6435> I would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>jeopardize<MH7843> my own inheritance<MH5159>. Redeem<MH1350> <i>it</i> for yourself; you <i>may have</i> my right<MH1353> of<MH1353> redemption<MH1353>, since<MH3588> I cannot<MH3201, 3808> redeem<MH1350> <i>it.</i>” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now this<MH2088> was <i>the custom</i> in former<MH6440> times<MH6440> in Israel<MH3478> concerning<MH5921> the redemption<MH1353> and the exchange<MH8545> <i>of land</i> to confirm<MH6965> any<MH3605> matter<MH1697>: a man<MH376> removed<MH8025> his sandal<MH5275> and gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to another<MH7453>; and this<MH2088> was the <i>way of</i> confirmation<MH8584> in Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So the redeemer<MH1350> said<MH559> to Boaz<MH1162>, “Buy<MH7069> <i>it</i> for yourself.” And he removed<MH8025> his sandal<MH5275>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Boaz<MH1162> said<MH559> to the elders<MH2205> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, “You are witnesses<MH5707> today<MH3117> that I have bought<MH7069> from the hand<MH3027> of Naomi<MH5281> all<MH3605> that belonged to Elimelech<MH458> and all<MH3605> that belonged to Chilion<MH3630> and Mahlon<MH4248>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Furthermore<MH1571>, I have acquired<MH7069> Ruth<MH7327> the Moabitess<MH4125>, the widow<MH802> of Mahlon<MH4248>, to be my wife<MH802> in order to raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> the name<MH8034> of the deceased<MH4191> on his inheritance<MH5159>, so that the name<MH8034> of the deceased<MH4191> will not be eliminated<MH3772> from his brothers<MH251> or from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>court<MH8179> of his <i>birth</i> place<MH4725>; you are witnesses<MH5707> today<MH3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>in the court<MH8179>, and the elders<MH2205>, said<MH559>, “<i>We are</i> witnesses<MH5707>. May the LORD<MH3068> make<MH5414> the woman<MH802> who is coming<MH935> into your home<MH1004> like Rachel<MH7354> and Leah<MH3812>, both<MH8147> of whom<MH834> built<MH1129> the house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>; and may you achieve<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>wealth<MH2428> in Ephrathah<MH672> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>become<MH7121> famous<MH7121, 8034> in Bethlehem<MH1035>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Moreover, may your house<MH1004> be like the house<MH1004> of Perez<MH6557> whom<MH834> Tamar<MH8559> bore<MH3205> to Judah<MH3063>, through<MH4480> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> will give<MH5414> you by this<MH2088> young<MH5291> woman<MH5291>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So Boaz<MH1162> took<MH3947> Ruth<MH7327>, and she became<MH1961> his wife<MH802>, and he had<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> her. And the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>enabled<MH5414> her to conceive<MH2032>, and she gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the women<MH802> said<MH559> to Naomi<MH5281>, “Blessed<MH1288> is the LORD<MH3068> who<MH834> has not left<MH7673a> you without<MH7673a> a redeemer<MH1350> today<MH3117>, and may his name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>become<MH7121> famous<MH7121> in Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>May he also be to you one who restores<MH7725> life<MH5315> and sustains<MH3557> your old<MH7872> age<MH7872>; for your daughter-in-law<MH3618>, who<MH834> loves<MH157> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>and is better<MH2896a> to you than<MH4480> seven<MH7651> sons<MH1121>, has given<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to him.” <p class="hdg">The Line of David</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Naomi<MH5281> took<MH3947> the child<MH3206> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>laid<MH7896> him in her lap<MH2436>, and became<MH1961> his nurse<MH539>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the neighbor<MH7934> women<MH7934> gave<MH7121> him a name<MH8034>, saying<MH559>, “A son<MH1121> has been born<MH3205> to Naomi<MH5281>!” So they named<MH7121, 8034> him Obed<MH5744>.
