While there, I worked with intelligence and reconnaissance assets.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMRT: Did you find it difficult to be active, then civilian, then called up again to duty in the National Guard with a deployment to the Middle East?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTN: \u003c/strong\u003eThe transition from active to civilian was easier than coming back from Afghanistan. Coming home was more difficult from combat and moving \u003cem\u003eback\u003c/em\u003e into a civilian employment role [rather than moving back to a military role, and then transitioning to civilian employment]. When I came home, the HR manager for PHX5 sent me through OLO [Operations Leadership Orientation] again to learn the Amazonian ways since I had been gone for almost two years.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMRT: How quickly did you transition from combat to civilian employment?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTN: \u003c/strong\u003eI transitioned in eight days from Southern Afghanistan back to Amazon.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMRT: What was your journey like when you went from Area Manager to your current role?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTN: \u003c/strong\u003eWhen I transitioned from combat, I met the leaders in Global Security Operations (GSCC) who brought me over. I transitioned from the Area Manager role to the Shift Manager role at the GSCC. The customer service position involved taking phone calls that were routed to you personally. I really wish we had more networking and help years before we separated. It\u0026rsquo;s tough to know what\u0026rsquo;s really out there and what tools to use. Navigating those take time, and starting the job search on terminal leave is stressful (and not the way to go - trust me, I did it)! Some nuclear power plants are black holes and other roles people tell you may be a good fit turn out to not be.\u0026nbsp;Navigating that \u0026ldquo;job hunting\u0026rdquo; world can be tough for someone starting late.\u0026nbsp;Networking (even after you\u0026rsquo;re already at a company) is HUGE!\u0026nbsp;I tell my team all the time to manage up, across, down, etcetera. If you want to move to a bigger and better role, make sure people know who you are and what you bring to the table. Being a veteran and having experience from the military, it helps me relate to the associates that I\u0026rsquo;m just not some college graduate who has never done hard work.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAM: What skills from the military translated into your job at Amazon?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIV: The skills that translated into my job with Amazon are discipline, adapting to changes and taking charge of your own career. Discipline is so important, and if I didn\u0026rsquo;t have it, it would be hard to do my job. Adapting to changes is also important because things are always changing. It has definitely helped with all the changes that are happening, even the simplest things like a policy being updated.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAM: Have you had a chance to work with other veterans at Amazon?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIV: I am a new hire at Amazon and have not had the chance to work with other veterans within my department but have encountered a few veterans in the FC.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAM: What skills did you not learn in the military but wish you had when you started your role at Amazon?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIV: There were skills that I didn\u0026rsquo;t learn from the military like communication and Microsoft Excel, although I did learn it while I was in college. If I hadn\u0026rsquo;t learned it in college, it would have been an issue for me. Communication is a skill that I am constantly working on because it\u0026rsquo;s important in any role that I want to take on.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAM: If you knew one thing before the transitioning process that would have made your experience easier, what would that be? What was the hardest piece of the transition?\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eIV: The one thing I wish I knew before the transition process was that I was not alone. It seemed like no one understood the transition that I was going through and if I had reached out to other veterans it would have made my transition easier. The hardest thing about transition is not having the same structure as I did while I was in the military. I went from having a routine to not having one because I had a gap before I started school. I was an army cadet at the age of 12 and joined the Royal Navy at 16. It was during my stint in the navy that I discovered a calling for logistics and I spent 14 years as a Logistics Officer. After applying for a role at Amazon, I received an email asking if I\u0026rsquo;d be interested in a different role as a Military Recruiter. My phone screen was interesting, as I had to take the call from my ship cabin and there was a lot of activity that day.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAfter passing a video interview, I was scheduled for a panel interview in Doncaster. One of the interesting topics that came up in my interview was how the Amazon Leadership Principles give guidance to managers and leaders in different scenarios. Our point of reference for this discussion was a fire on the M1 motorway which was visible\u0026nbsp; from the office. A few days later, I drove my mother home to Scotland and suggested we drive past Doncaster and I would point out one of the Amazon sites where I might work. Just then, I received a phone call inviting me to attend a military recruiting event in Germany. The next day I was representing Amazon as a Military Recruiter for the UK.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eI worked for 2 years with an amazing recruitment team in the UK and across Europe and helped grow and develop our recruiting strategy. One of my greatest successes was spearheading the Amazon signing of the UK Military Corporate Convent. This signing allowed me to visit Houses of Parliament, on behalf of Amazon, and treat my Line Manager and Head of Ops for UK to a military-event lunch at the Tower of London. I left Amazon after 2 years to pursue other adventures including travelling around the world and working in the jungles of Papua New Guinea.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I returned home, I saw how Amazon had grown in the UK and across Europe, and the development of Delivery Stations, Sort Centers, Amazon Logistics, artificial intelligence, and fulfillment centers. I knew that I wanted to return to Amazon and work in the operations space; this is where my passion lies. I\u0026rsquo;m now working as an Area Manager in Doncaster, near where I had driven with my mother years earlier, and I have the biggest smile on my face. My sleeves are rolled up and I\u0026rsquo;m delighted to be delivering thousands of smiles for customers every
