In the context of Habakkuk, the prophet is expressing trust in God despite the impending judgment on Judah. This echoes similar sentiments found in Psalms, such as Psalm 18:32, where God is described as the one who arms with strength. The use of "GOD the Lord" underscores the covenant relationship between Yahweh and His people, highlighting His sovereignty and faithfulness.
He makes my feet like those of a deer;
The imagery of a deer suggests agility, sure-footedness, and the ability to navigate difficult terrain. In ancient Near Eastern culture, deer were known for their grace and speed, often inhabiting mountainous regions. This metaphor indicates that God equips the believer to overcome obstacles and challenges. Similar imagery is found in 2 Samuel 22:34 and Psalm 18:33, where God enables David to stand firm and secure in difficult situations.
He makes me walk upon the heights!
Walking upon the heights signifies victory, security, and a vantage point over adversaries. In biblical times, high places were often associated with safety and divine encounters. This phrase suggests that God elevates the believer above trials, providing a perspective of triumph and peace. It can also be seen as a type of spiritual ascension, where the believer is lifted to a place of communion with God, reminiscent of Moses on Mount Sinai or Elijah on Mount Carmel.
For the choirmaster.
This indicates that the passage was intended for public worship and musical accompaniment. The role of the choirmaster was crucial in leading the congregation in praise and ensuring the proper execution of musical elements. This reflects the communal aspect of faith, where individual expressions of trust in God are shared and celebrated within the community.
With stringed instruments.
The mention of stringed instruments suggests a specific musical setting, likely involving lyres or harps, which were common in ancient Israelite worship. This detail highlights the importance of music in expressing theological truths and emotions. The use of instruments in worship is seen throughout the Psalms and was an integral part of temple worship, enhancing the spiritual experience and aiding in the memorization and proclamation of God's word.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Habakkuk
A prophet in the Old Testament who dialogues with God about the coming judgment on Judah and the eventual punishment of Babylon.

2. The Lord GOD (Yahweh Adonai)
The covenant name of God, emphasizing His sovereignty and lordship.

3. Deer
Symbolic of agility and sure-footedness, often used in biblical poetry to describe swiftness and grace.

4. Heights
Represents places of security and vantage, often used metaphorically for spiritual elevation or victory.

5. Judah
The southern kingdom of Israel, facing impending judgment during Habakkuk's time.
Teaching Points
Divine Strength
God is the ultimate source of strength for believers. The rubric may be interpreted either "To the precentor. (To be performed) on my stringed instruments," or, "To him who presides over my stringed instruments." The fact that the same direction occurs with the words in the same order in six Psalms perhaps favours the latter rendering in all cases. The preposition al would, however, in this case be appropriate rather than b' On the terms used, see Psalm 4:1. It has been inferred from the use of the possessive pronoun, "my stringed instruments," that Habakkuk was a Levite, and therefore himself entitled to accompany the Temple music. But see Introduction, ? 1.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 19. - The Lord God is my strength; more accurately, Jehovah, the Lord, is my strength, from Psalm 18:32; comp. Psalm 27:1. He will make my feet like hinds' feet (Psalm 18:33). This is a musical direction, answering to the heading in ver. 1, and implies that the ode is committed to the conductor of the temple music, to be by him adapted for the public service to the accompaniment of stringed instruments. Such directions are elsewhere always found at the beginning, not the end, of psalms (see Psalm 4; Psalm 6; Psalm 54; Psalm 55; Psalm 67; Psalm 76.). It has been thought that the suffix of the first person, "my stringed instruments," denotes that Habakkuk had a right to take part in the temple service, and was therefore a Levite; but it is very doubtful whether this suffix is not a clerical error, as Kuenen and Ewald suppose, or merely paragogic. Certainly neither the Greek, Latin, nor Syriac Versions afford it any confirmation. These versions make the subscription part of the ode.
