I started my first very basic site in October 1996, moving to the MR domain name in August 1998.</p> <p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 15px; font-family: Roboto; color: rgb(74, 74, 74); font-size: 16px;">In 2022 I will continue to celebrate surviving in the wild for this long, with a series of “Top” 25 from 25 Awards, which will no doubt be good for some debate.</p> <p style="box-sizing: inherit; An awesome release, showcasing the repertoire of one of the most consistent British hard rock bands around.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Originally formed in 1973 by the Troy brothers, Tino and Chris, Praying Mantis became one of the most influential bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The band is also one of a very small number of bands from that era to have remained an ongoing concern over the intervening years, and to still record and appear live regularly. The debut Praying Mantis album, “Time Tells No Lies” (Arista) was released in 1981 to critical acclaim, and it remains a significant milestone in the history of NWOBHM. Following a short-lived reformation of most of the original line-up of Praying Mantis in 1987, the band went back on hiatus until offered the chance to play in Japan with ex-Iron Maiden members Paul Di’Anno and Dennis Stratton in 1990. This experience injected new life into the band, and also marked the beginning of a productive 15 year partnership with Dennis Stratton. </span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">The band’s second official studio album, “Predator in Disguise” was released in 1991, and the band have continued to write and release new material every two to three years ever since, with a shifting line-up which has featured the likes of Doogie White, Gary Barden, Bernie Shaw, Bruce Bisland, Mike Freeland, Gary Mackenzie, and many other figures from the cream of Britain’s rock fraternity. Following another major change in line-up (including the departure of Dennis Stratton), Praying Mantis signed with Frontiers in 2007 and recorded the album “Sanctuary”, which was released in 2009. In fact, <strong>»No Halos In Hell« </strong>is one of those rare albums that defies being placed neatly in a boxed-up metal genre coming out heavy and dynamic, yet loaded with melodic vocal hooks that stay nailed to the brain for days while keeping the impact hard and heavy. Fusing these two elements in the best way possible was <strong>CYHRA</strong>'s main focus this time out. </span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;"><em>"When I was writing, I sat down and thought about what worked and what didn't work on the first album. What I was focusing on the most for »No Halos In Hell« was making the songs more live oriented, and I think that live 'friendliness' of the songs also brings the catchiness up to another level. I was constantly thinking about hook lines that should stick in your head."</em> says <strong>Jake E.</strong></span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">As strong as <strong>»Letters To Myself« </strong>was as a debut, <strong>»No Halos In Hell«</strong> is head and shoulders above it in every way. The addition of guitarist <strong>Euge Valovirta</strong> (ex-<strong>SHINING</strong>) as a full member has raised the creative process to a level where, according to <strong>Jake E</strong>, <em>"Everyone is playing to the point of what is best for the song." </em>There is no showboating, no push-pull of the individual members trying to claim their moments in the spotlight. <strong>CYHRA</strong> is a unit and everyone involved is striving to get the most out of the songwriting. This included <strong>Jake E</strong>, as the principal songwriter, being open to ideas from his bandmates and working with American songwriter / keyboardist <strong>Mark Mangold</strong> (Michael Bolton, Cher) on the ballad <strong>‘Lost In Time’</strong>.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>»No Halos In Hell« </strong>also showcases <strong>Jake E</strong>'s growth as a lyric writer, digging deep and going so far as to address his brother's suicide on <strong>’Battle From Within’</strong>. He calls it a personal album but the lyrics are open to interpretation for the listener.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;"><em>"I was trying to write the lyrics in a way that they mean something to me, clearly," </em>says <strong>Jake E</strong>, <em>"but I want the listener to hear the lyrics and know what those feelings are that I'm talking about."</em></span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">For those that want to try and label <strong>CYHRA</strong> with a genre stamp, one listen through <strong>»No Halos In Hell« </strong>will instantly solidify the stance that <strong>Jake E</strong> and his bandmates think and play outside the box. This is reflected in the multi-faceted spread of tracks from lead-off track <strong>‘Out Of My Life’</strong>, the thundering <strong>‘Kings Tonight’</strong>, the soaring folk-flavoured <strong>‘Blood Brothers’</strong>, the tender <strong>‘Lost In Time’</strong>, and the schizophrenic <strong>‘Hit Me’</strong>. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">As for the unique title of the album, it was <strong>Jesper Strömblad</strong> that came up with <strong>»No Halos In Hell«</strong>. In fact, it was proposed as the title for the first album before it was completed but <strong>CYHRA</strong> chose to wait for album #2. Mats, a native Swede grew up in Östersund in northern Sweden but has resided in Stockholm since the mid 80's. <br />  <br /> The new record is a collection of songs that are a bit more laid back than the 220 Volt stuff, and move freely between rock, hard rock, singer/songwriter style and some AOR-touches here and there.  <br />  <br /> Mats asked his brother Ulf to play all keyboards, and gathered some great musician friends to help out incl. drummer Björn “Grizzly” Höglund (Easy Action, The Summit, Hoven Droven), drummer Peter Hermansson (220 Volt, Talisman, John Norum), Bass-ace Nalle Påhlsson (Therion, Treat, Easy Action), and also some well-known musicians in Sweden as drummer Mike Ajax, bassist Lars Ericsson (The Summit), the first 220 Volt singer Christer “Frille” Åsell and also vocalist Jenny Fall. “The Time Optimist” consists of 11 tracks in different styles, nine tracks penned by Mats, one by Mats co-written with Björn Höglund, and the album also has a cover of the track “Real Gone” by Sheryl Crow/John Shanks. There are two duets where Mats shares the lead vocals with singer Jenny Fall, and one with “Frille” Åsell. <br />  <br /> The term “time optimist” is a Swedish expression referring to a person who is always positive that he/she will achieve a certain amount of work in specified time and often failing.  This self-produced release will come out on CD, vinyl and on digital platforms on December 6th 2019.  <br />  <br /> “Megalo Seitani” will be available as a lyric video & single on October 4th. They were a marker of confidence by both the record label and the artist. Angel was no exception as all eyes had been on the band for some considerable time in preparation for an anointment to the premier league. Because label mates KISS had exploded with their epoch-making ‘Alive!’ double album it seemed as though Angel could have the same success. Sadly, however, that success was not to be.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">With five studio albums behind them there was no shortage of material from which to compile this album.</span></div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Recording two concerts in California during 1978, the band had a red hot selection of tracks that incorporated such nuggets as ‘Tower’ and ‘Feelin’ Right’ (complete with a Jeff Beck tribute) from their very earliest, prog-influenced, days to the pop metal of ‘Ain’t Gonna Eat My Heart Out Anymore’, ‘Got Love If You Want It’ and ‘White Lightning’. They also found room to include some surprises, such as a fine rendition of the Mott The Hoople standard ‘All The Young Dudes’ and a brand studio track, ‘20th Century Foxes’, recorded for the 1980 ‘Foxes’ film soundtrack.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Despite the album’s explosive content and no-holds-barred performance, the record failed to connect in the way that everyone had hoped for. In addition, Casablanca Records were fast losing traction as a company and facing massive destabilising forces, which left the band pretty much rudderless. Launched as the diametrical opposite of KISS (who shared the same label) the band was supposed to reflect the less intimidating qualities of their great adversaries. It was a polar position reinforced by progressive musical attributes and an image that featured angelic all white costumes. KISS was being sold as bad boys but Angel, like the name suggests, were knights in white satin. Their complex, prog-infused, pomp rock suggested that they were superior musicians cut from a very British-influenced musical heritage, with shades of Yes, Led Zeppelin, Procol Harum and Genesis underscoring their style.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">‘White Hot’ was the band’s fourth album, following three highly praised but commercially disappointing previous records. This time around, they decided to take stock and plan a different musical strategy. One that saw them refining their style, drawing on hard hitting pop rock rather than overt prog touches. In addition, they brought in a new producer, Eddie Leonetti, a man who had been building a healthy and respectable reputation as the hard rock producer de jour. Of course, they had already moved through a fledgling progressive rock stage, working towards a more accessible style, perfectly framed by their previous album, ‘White Hot’. The focus was now on pure pop metal, the band crafting exquisite melodic hard rock with riffs and hooks to die for. They were also defining their image, as the ‘Sinful’ the album sleeve showcased the band with perfectly coiffed hair and in stunning all white superhero style outfits. It was an angelic sight to behold.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Issued in 1978, recorded in Los Angeles and produced once again by Eddie Leonetti (Legs Diamond, Moxy, Rex) the record packs an impressive sonic punch, easily outpacing their previous works and positioning the band as potential superstars. In a bizarre move, the record was originally titled ‘Bad Publicity’ and had a suitably debauched album sleeve that was in complete contrast to their previous image. At the 11th hour after an intervention from the label boss at Casablanca this sleeve was abandoned, although several thousand copies were printed and ready to ship to stores. That sleeve has been included in this re-issue.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Musically, the album contained some of the band’s most identifiable tracks, songs such as ‘Don’t Take Your Love’, ‘Waited A Long Time’ and ‘L.A. Lady’. Sadly the big breakthrough failed to materialise, leaving both band and label mystified as to their lack of progress. Motörhead, although hugely successful as a live act and feverishly lauded in the UK media, had not enjoyed significant record sales in North America; not unsurprising considering the raw ferocity of their sound. For Clarke this was an opportunity to take stock and build a musical outfit that could break into that market with a far more wide screen approach. It was a smart move as Fastway’s debut album struck gold in the USA, elevating their profile far beyond Motörhead’s niche appeal.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Surrounding himself with a mixture of well respected band members, including former Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley, ex-Taste bassist Charlie McCracken and, sparkling new discovery, Irish vocalist Dave King, the band immersed themselves in blues rock but with a contemporary edge. It was a sound that won much respect and fitted in nicely with the emerging commercial interest in hard rock. Continuing their progress they recorded ‘All Fired Up’, a record that stylistically mirrored the band’s debut album and was produced once again by industry legend Eddie Kramer (Kiss, Hendrix, Humble Pie) who had so successfully guided the previous record.</span></div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Issued in July 1984, ‘All Fired Up’ was positively received, getting off to a good start and attracting rave reviews. The album boasts a selection of tough, no-nonsense tracks, including such gems as ‘Steal The Show’, ‘Tell Me’, ‘If You Could See’ and the title track. The various members had seen active duty in bands ranging from the Blues Magoos & Balance (vocalist Peppy Castro), Barnaby Bye & Aviator (drummer Mike Ricciardella) to psych rockers the Illusion (guitarists Ritchie Cerniglia and Mike Maniscalo together with Mike Ricciardella). With their various individual projects falling apart, Wiggy Bits were than formed as a rather effective hard rock band and handled by, none other than, Hall And Oates manager Tommy Motolla, a man who would eventually become the CEO of SONY music.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">Recording at the Record Plant in NYC, the band’s lone album is a fine example of strong yet melodic mid seventies hard rock with the emphasis on edgy dynamics, powerful riffs and the soaring vocals of Peppy Castro. Signed to Polydor, their album was produced mainly by the band (engineered by future superproducer Jimmy Iovine) was issued in 1976, and despite its quality received little fan fare outside of a handful of critics and fans from their previous groups.</span></div> <div> </div> <div><span style="font-size:14px;">The album, building on a ground swell of solid hard rock tracks such as ‘Free To Ride The Wind’, ‘Oh Captain’, ‘I’ll Write You Off’ and ‘Place In The Sun’, showcase a band with an ambitious mandate, employing lots of solid lead guitar and impressive arrangements.
