I am especially interested in your positionality paper as your family/cultural background makes the piece more intriguing. I liked your research questions. I am unfamiliar with all of the digital theories you listed, but as far as social/cultural theories have you looked into the book Empire by Hardt & Negri. For some reason that book jumped out of me in thinking of your proposal. In it they discuss some interesting concepts that might help envelop the other theoretical frameworks that are more specific to digital theories/technology? Also thinking of Lasch. Not sure if that's helpful, but hopefully you can get something from my comments!!

Cool topic, Eric. Your thinking has gotten clearer and the direction is a fruitful topic that could indeed be a dissertation incorporating the social, cultural and economic aspects of ICT adoption and mobilization in rural India. You'll need to flesh this out more, you have a good start, here are some suggestions: 1. You state..."But, when a person shifts their focus towards the 3%, or fewer, of the Indian population that is or can be connected then are we not just reifying the gap and/or even widening it?" Great--change this into an argument--"I suggest that by focusing on the 3% that may have access to the Internet scholars, activists and policy makers are reifying and widening the participation gap. Instead of maintaining this focus I intend to... 2. same with your focus on rural... "Because the tendency has been to study technology where it is most prevelent in urban settings scholars have missed the everyday practices, uses and mobilizations of technology and the technological imaginary in rural India. In my study I will.... 3. I don't think you need to focus just on one ICT--cellphone etc...instead look at the ICT ecology and define how it is shaped, understood, mobilized and put into practice ...some of this may include actual devices (ie cellphones) and some may be more of a technological imaginary that is mobilized (say in education planning etc) 4. You'll need to do some reading on ethnography before you do fieldwork, come and see me and I'll point you to some reading. Or check with me about an independent study on the topic. 5. You'll need to flesh out your annotated bib and this will help you with your framework logistics/structures as well

Eric,
This focus is much improved. Your powerpoint is fine for getting across the basics, but I am not seeing the specifics, the introduction and links to class themes. Some specifics for improvment: 1. india or idaho? 2. if your focus is on jobs then your research questions need to begin there. You also need one large/framing question that leads into your others--so we can see what the issue is and what the stakes are for studying this topic in depth 3. your main topic needs a clear introduction section--what are the issues, how are they framed now, what is missing etc. 4. slide three ends and I can't see the whole thing 5. methodology section needs to be linked to the questions--why is this the best way to do this project? 6. links to class themes not clear--you need more expository writing or if you want to use slides that is fine, but with just the questions and method I get no sense of the problem and its specific need to be addressed--what are the stakes involved. 7. You need a clear statement/section on the ecology of this issue--map it oiut and the technological imaginary that surrounds this issue.

Alli–
Your topic (if it is Idaho) is relevant and your emphasis on tech jobs is fine–you need to clearly articulate WHY this matters for your research, what is at stake, what is the problem you are addressing with this research. Your playlist idea is key to your argument and integrating the technological aspect more will help flesh this out. I can see you are still struggling with how to bring all this material together, your framework is broad and at times jumps around, I think mapping out this information ecology would help as would making your own argument more central and then drawing in the threads of specific theorists. I need to see more on Gen Y with some nuance within education to understand your research trajectory and your own claims. Here are some specific places to focus for improvement: 1. assumption--postmodern world of technology--what does this mean? 2. There is a leap from the intro to the problem statement--the linkage between your brief and broad intro and the problem is not clear. You jump to education and there was nothing about that and Gen Y in the intro. Slow down and unpack the issues in the intro without falling into sweeping generalizations. 3. playlist theory is not defined when you first introduce it--it's not self-evident so you need to take your reader step by step through what it is, what you mean by it, why it is a useful conceptualization etc. 4. The first sentence in your lit review section says you target one position, but you don't say what it is. 5. Need more in your lit review section 6. If you want to bring in folks like Hardt and Negri to connect to No Child Left behind you need more than a name drop, the linkage is not self-evident 7. Your list of questions at the end of the Y/must we... section are good--and need to be addressed not just listed, these should be built on and made central to the paper project. 8.Methodology--this is a good start, but what about the students? or is your sole focus on the educators? Isn't there a relationship worth investigating...in fact with the given age range they are often both considered Gen Y. 9. "Currently, theory is suspended in the diaspora of global consequences."--Not sure what you mean by this...slow down, unpack. 9. "theory" is a broad term and you give it agency...ie--theory must acknowledge...but theory can not do this only theorists can and you need to identify what you mean by this and who you are addressing and what body of theory. 10. you get to the technology at the end but don't incorporate the class readings or theories. Technology needs to be central to this discussion, particularly because Gen Y is defined by there use of various technologies and you leave unstated the linkages between this. It cannot be taken-for-granted that virtuality or remix etc are central to this group or to the ways in which they define, use and recreate/create theory in practice within an education setting.

Mary, you have a lot of information here and many good thoughts. Well constructed and engaging. Here are my thoughts for improvement. 1) I like Mary's question and along those same lines I think that you leave unstated and or assumed the layers of each of these large bundles--community, individual, collectivism etc are taken for granted and I think you can use some critique and or incorporation of other methods in addition to Hofstede鈥檚 which I find overly formulaic and lacking in the nuances of daily life that one might find more in an ethnographic approach. 2) Technology and the technological imaginary function in parts of your paper but should be more central given the class focus. Certainly in the last campaign this is key, but they functioned before as well. 3) Linkages to class readings were not clear to me. 4) "True development" is a loaded term, be careful to look at your own biases and agenda and unpack what claims you are making with such notions. 5) I don't think you have enough evidence to suggest that it is only that people were "trained" to depend on govt for these basic needs. Certainly govt played a role, but there were pre-existing structures as well as colonial residue that produced this model. 6) citations for Indian history? The three models of development--summary is good, needs more analysis and linkages to class themes

Priyanka,
Very thoughtful piece.
