Tsiranana was elected president of the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/topic/republic-government" class="md-crosslink autoxref" data-show-preview="true">republic</a>, and he was instrumental in obtaining its independence on June 26, 1960. Tsiranana and the PSD remained in power until 1972. Under his regime, successive development plans were inspired, according to Tsiranana, by a “grassroots socialism” and were aimed at improving the lot of the peasantry. This, coupled with his own poor health, led him to appoint Maj. Gen. <span id="ref386709"></span>Gabriel Ramanantsoa as <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/topic/prime-minister" class="md-crosslink autoxref" data-show-preview="true">prime minister</a> with full powers of government, and the First Republic came to an end.</p><!--[P3]--><span class="marker p3"></span><!--[AM3]--><span class="marker AM3 am-inline"></span><!--[MOD3]--><span class="marker MOD3 mod-inline"></span></section> <section id="ref279550" data-level="2"><h2 class="h2">Transition</h2> <p class="topic-paragraph">A <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="plebiscite" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plebiscite" data-type="MW">plebiscite</a> on October 8, 1972, confirmed Ramanantsoa as head of government; there was no longer a president after Tsiranana resigned on October 11. The new <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/topic/head-of-government" class="md-crosslink autoxref" data-show-preview="true">head of government</a> initiated radically different foreign and domestic policies. Under new agreements with France, French military and naval forces were removed from the island, and all French citizens were treated as aliens. Ties were established with the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/place/Soviet-Union" class="md-crosslink autoxref" data-show-preview="true">Soviet Union</a> and other communist nations, and the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/topic/nation-state" class="md-crosslink autoxref" data-show-preview="true">country</a> was withdrawn from the Franc Zone. Comdr. <span id="ref386711"></span><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20231207000825/https://www.britannica.com/biography/Didier-Ratsiraka" class="md-crosslink">Didier Ratsiraka</a> president and head of the Revolutionary Council.
