The term "seasons" is used to describe the natural divisions of the year, as well as appointed times for specific events or purposes.

Creation and Natural Order

The establishment of seasons is rooted in the creation narrative. In Genesis 1:14, God declares, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark the seasons and days and years." Here, the celestial bodies are appointed to govern time, indicating the divine order and regularity of the natural world. This order is further affirmed in Genesis 8:22, where God promises, "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall never cease."

Agricultural Significance

Seasons play a crucial role in the agricultural life of ancient Israel, a society heavily reliant on farming. The cycle of planting and harvest is a recurring theme in Scripture, symbolizing God's provision and faithfulness. Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven," emphasizing the appropriateness and timing of human activities in accordance with God's design.

Spiritual and Prophetic Seasons

Beyond the physical, seasons also carry spiritual and prophetic significance. The Bible often uses the concept of seasons to describe periods of divine activity or judgment. For instance, the "season" of repentance and renewal is highlighted in the prophetic writings. In Hosea 10:12, the prophet urges, "Sow for yourselves righteousness and reap the fruit of loving devotion; break up your unplowed ground, for it is time to seek the LORD until He comes and sends righteousness upon you like rain."

Eschatological Implications

In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of discerning the "signs of the times" (Matthew 16:3), urging His followers to recognize the spiritual seasons and be prepared for His return. The Apostle Paul also uses the metaphor of seasons to describe the readiness required for the end times, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2: "Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you. For you are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."

Personal and Communal Application

Seasons in the Bible also reflect the personal and communal experiences of believers. The Psalms often express the changing seasons of life, from times of lament to moments of joy and thanksgiving. Psalm 1:3 describes the righteous person as "a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does."

In summary, the biblical concept of seasons encompasses the natural, spiritual, and prophetic dimensions of life, illustrating God's sovereignty and the rhythm of His creation. Through the lens of Scripture, seasons remind believers of the importance of recognizing God's timing and purpose in every aspect of life.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
(Genesis 8:22). The range of temperature is not great. In the Bible we have no reference to spring or autumn; the only seasons mentioned are "summer and winter" (Genesis 8:22 Psalm 74:17 Zechariah 14:8).

Winter is the season of rain lasting from November to May. The temperature at sealevel in Palestine reaches freezing-point occasionally, but seldom is less than 40? F. On the hills and mountains it is colder, depending on the height. The people have no means of heating their houses, and suffer much with the cold. They wrap up their necks and heads and keep inside the houses out of the wind as much as possible. "The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter" (Proverbs 20:4). Jesus in speaking of the destruction of Jerusalem says, "Pray ye that your flight be not in the winter" (Matthew 24:20). Paul asks Timothy to "come before winter" (2 Timothy 4:21) as navigation closed then and travel was virtually impossible.

Summer is very hot and rainless.
