Over the course of the next year, he painted her almost fifty times: standing, sitting, lying down; clothed, nude, or—as here—somewhere in between. Wrapped in a black lace mantilla, the model’s body is at once revealed and concealed. Her direct but sightless gaze lends the encounter a peculiar erotic charge. The painter’s obsession with Lorette coincided with a transformation in his style, a shift from the abstract approach of his youth to the more concrete and harmonious manner of his maturity. Like many paintings of its model, <i>The Black Shawl</i> perches uneasily between the avant-garde provocations of early Matisse and the sensuous forms of late.</p></div> </div> </div> <div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-12 col-md-6 col-md-offset-1"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12 details-slider"> <div class="slide"> <div class="detail-image-item"> <div class="img-wrap"> <a href="/art/viewer/M.1982.3.P" target="_blank"> <picture class="img-m1x main-image"> <!--[if IE 9]><video style="display: none;"><![endif]--> <source srcset="//images.nortonsimon.org/iipsrv/iipsrv.fcgi?QLT=100&amp;IIIF=M19823P.jpf/full/!668,1002/0/default.jpg, //images.nortonsimon.org/iipsrv/iipsrv.fcgi?QLT=100&amp;IIIF=M19823P.jpf/full/!668,1002/0/default.jpg 2x" media="(max-width: 767px)"> <source srcset="//images.nortonsimon.org/iipsrv/iipsrv.fcgi?QLT=100&amp;IIIF=M19823P.jpf/full/!668,1002/0/default.jpg"> <!--[if IE 9]></video><![endif]--> <img src="//images.nortonsimon.org/iipsrv/iipsrv.fcgi?QLT=100&amp;IIIF=M19823P.jpf/full/!668,1002/0/default.jpg" alt="The Black Shawl" title="The Black Shawl" onerror="this.onerror='';this.parentNode.children[1].srcset = '/_resources/themes/nsm/images/defaults/collection-image-desktop.png';"/> </picture> </a> </div> <div class="desc-text"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-11"></div> <div class="col-xs-1"><a href="/art/viewer/M.1982.3.P" class="zoom-link"><i class="fa-thin fa-expand"><span class="sr-only">Zoom Image</span></i></a> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="col-xs-12 details-slider-nav-thumbnails"> <a style="background-image: url('//images.nortonsimon.org/iipsrv/iipsrv.fcgi?QLT=100&amp;IIIF=M19823P.jpf/full/!668,1002/0/default.jpg');"></a> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="alt-rows details-row"> <div class="container container-large"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12" style="padding-bottom:0;"> <h3 class="col_details">Details</h3> </div> <ul class="object-list col-xs-12"> <li class="col-list-item"> <span class="title">Artist Name: </span> <span class="text"><a href="https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/search-the-collection/result?artists[]=816" class="maker-link">Henri Matisse</a> (French, 1869-1954) </span> </li> <li class="col-list-item"> <span class="title">Title: </span> <span class="text">The Black Shawl </span> </li> <li class="col-list-item"> <span class="title">Date:</span> <span class="text"> 1917 </span> </li> <li class="col-list-item"> <span class="title">Medium: </span> <span class="text">Oil on canvas </span> </li> <li class="col-list-item"> <span class="title">Dimensions: </span> <span class="text">26-1/2 x 50-3/4 in. En 1918, cuando pintó este cuadro, el arte de Matisse aún tenía repercusiones de esa experiencia. Aquí, pintó a su modelo Lorette en un encaje negro traslúcido, recostada lánguidamente en una cama, como una misteriosa odalisca o concubina. Nos mira de manera seductora, con su cabello negro cayendo en un hermoso y abundante rizo. La sinuosa línea de su cuerpo y el diseño de flores del encaje y del cubrecama se disputan la atención, recordando las ricas tradiciones decorativas del norte de África. El mundo árabe dejó una duradera impresión en Matisse, que determinó su arte a través de toda su carrera. En una fase tan temprana como 1906, él ya estaba en Argelia, fusionando sus azulejos y coloridas telas en decorativos cuadros. Él dijo: <strong>MATISSE (ACTOR):</strong> “Con lo que sueño es con un arte de equilibro, pureza y serenidad carente de temas perturbadores o deprimentes, un arte que pueda ser para cada trabajador cerebral una influencia apaciguadora, algo como una buena silla para descansar de la fatiga física”.</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="alt-rows"> <div class="container container-large artist-images"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-md-12"> <h3 class="col_artwork">Additional Artwork by Artist</h3> </div> </div> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 col-center-block rel-item img-item"> <a href="https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/detail/M.1989.1.20.L" alt="Autograph Letter to Ambroise Vollard, Paris Dealer and Publisher - Matisse, Henri" title="Autograph Letter to Ambroise Vollard, Paris Dealer and Publisher" class="rel-img-holder" style="background-image: url('/assets/Uploads/90a5fef0f0/square-not-available-802__ScaleWidthWzQwMF0.png');background-position: center;"></a> <span class="title caption">Autograph Letter to Ambroise Vollard, Paris Dealer and Publisher </span> <span class="maker caption">Henri Matisse </span> <span class="date caption">February 13, 1913 </span> </div> <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 col-center-block rel-item img-item"> <a href="https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/detail/M.1989.1.21.L" alt="Autograph Letter to Vilma Javor, One of His Models - Matisse, Henri" title="Autograph Letter to Vilma Javor, One of His Models" class="rel-img-holder" style="background-image: url('/assets/Uploads/90a5fef0f0/square-not-available-802__ScaleWidthWzQwMF0.png');background-position: center;"></a> <span class="title caption">Autograph Letter to Vilma Javor, One of His Models </span> <span class="maker caption">Henri Matisse </span> <span class="date caption">August 19, 1939 </span> </div> <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 col-center-block rel-item img-item"> <a href="https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/detail/M.2010.1.63.1-20.G" alt="Jazz - Matisse, Henri" title="Jazz" class="rel-img-holder" style="background-image: url('/assets/Uploads/90a5fef0f0/square-not-available-802__ScaleWidthWzQwMF0.png');background-position: center;"></a> <span class="title caption">Jazz </span> <span class="maker caption">Henri Matisse </span> <span class="date caption">1947 </span> </div> <div class="col-xs-6 col-md-3 col-center-block rel-item"> <a href="https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/search-the-collection/result?artists[]=816" class="rel-img-holder link-see-all"><span>SEE ALL</span></a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="alt-rows request-image"> <div class="container container-large"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-xs-12 col-md-12"> <div class="panel-group" id="accordion-request-image" role="tablist" aria-multiselectable="true"> <div class="panel panel-default"> <div class="panel-heading" role="tab" id="requestImageHeader"> <h4 class="panel-title"><a class="collapsed" role="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-parent="#accordion-request-image" href="/art/detail/M.1982.3.P/#request-image" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="request-image"><i class="more-less pull-right fa-sharp fa-solid fa-circle-plus"></i><span class="panel-header-text">Request an Image</span></a></h4> </div> <div id="request-image" class="panel-collapse collapse" role="tabpanel" aria-labelledby="requestImageHeader"> <div class="panel-body columns-2"><p>Image reproduction permission may be granted for scholarly or arts related commercial use. Over the course of the next year, he painted her almost fifty times: standing, sitting, lying down; clothed, nude, or—as here—somewhere in between. Wrapped in a black lace mantilla, the model’s body is at once revealed and concealed. Her direct but sightless gaze lends the encounter a peculiar erotic charge. The painter’s obsession with Lorette coincided with a transformation in his style, a shift from the abstract approach of his youth to the more concrete and harmonious manner of his maturity. Like many paintings of its model, The Black Shawl perches uneasily between the avant-garde provocations of early Matisse and the sensuous forms of late.", "artist": [{ "@type": "Person", "name": "Henri Matisse" }], "artMedium": "Oil on canvas", "artform": "Paintings", "dateCreated": "1917" } </script> <script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "http://schema.org", "@type": "BreadcrumbList", "itemListElement": [ { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "item": { "@id": "https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/", "name": "Art", "image": "" } } , { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "item": { "@id": "https://www.nortonsimon.org/art/detail/M.1982.3.P", "name": "The Black Shawl", "image": "" } } ] } </script> <script>(function(){function c(){var b=a.contentDocument||a.contentWindow.document;if(b){var d=b.createElement('script');d.innerHTML="window.__CF$cv$params={r:'8e7586a638724104',t:'MTczMjQxMDY5OC4wMDAwMDA='};var a=document.createElement('script');a.nonce='';a.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js';document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(a);";b.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(d)}}if(document.body){var a=document.createElement('iframe');a.height=1;a.width=1;a.style.position='absolute';a.style.top=0;a.style.left=0;a.style.border='none';a.style.visibility='hidden';document.body.appendChild(a);if('loading'!==document.readyState)c();else if(window.addEventListener)document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded',c);else{var e=document.onreadystatechange||function(){};document.onreadystatechange=function(b){e(b);'loading'!==document.readyState&&(document.onreadystatechange=e,c())}}}})();</script></body> </html>
