Cabinet Minute STTE (2006) 45 is an approval by Cabinet whereby current and future ECIAF’s programmes are mandated to produce “young people with a practical technological tertiary level education”. Graduates of this programme are ‘work ready individuals’ who are rapidly employed in the monitoring of animal health in the ruminant and poultry sector.

Although the Diploma in AHPVPH has been in existence for many years, this revised version brings in a new philosophy of training that seeks to embody the entrepreneurial dimension and focuses on training in the three core areas. The NETD in Chemical Engineering is a well-established engineering discipline worldwide and designed to meet the present and future demand for Chemical Engineering Technicians and highly trained Operators. Chemical and Process Engineering is about the transformation of raw materials into useful products. Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturing industry has need for a stronger knowledge base in chemical and process engineering at the technician and operator level as well as to meet the industry need for more ‘hands-on’ graduate chemical or process engineers. This is particularly important as inherent industrial and manufacturing processes, technologies and their associated instrumentation and control and quality systems are constantly modernising. The NETD in Chemical Engineering is internationally accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) of the United Kingdom.

Programme Credits: 83

Entry Requirements:

Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’Level including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and Chemistry (excluding Electrical/Electronic, Instrumentation, Renewable Energy Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering); and OR

Completion of UTT’s Pre-University Programme (PUP) or Certificate in Applied Engineering programme with a minimum of 50% in ALL attempted subject areas; OR USTEP

Other equivalent qualifications may also be considered.

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. This programme was the first Maritime Bachelor's degree offered within Trinidad and Tobago and is the only accredited undergraduate maritime business degree offered in the region to date. The programme answers to the recommendations of several studies on the requirements for the development of the maritime sector. The Vision 2030 National Development Strategy 2016-2030 has identified that quality infrastructure and transportation are key facilitators for improving productivity. Maritime Services has been identified as one of seven key national economic areas being targeted for expansion and achieving global competitiveness. Vision 2030 further states that continued efforts will be placed on improving the quality of port services, increasing private investment in the maritime sector, and integrating port operations. It is expected that suitably qualified graduates working within the maritime sector will fuel and enhance the growth of this industry through their entrepreneurship.

The programme is targeted at persons wishing to undertake a career in the shore-based maritime industry. Maritime education is a relatively new concept in the tertiary education landscape of the region. While various forms and levels of training have existed in little pockets within the region, prior to this degree there was no undergraduate programme tailored to building the knowledge and skills for shore-based maritime administration.
Fundamental aims of this programme are to:

develop "industry-ready" graduates with demonstrated competencies in addressing issues and problems likely to arise in the maritime field

fulfil the existing demand for trained professionals in the local maritime industry

build the human resource capacity within the industry to fuel, through its graduates, the long term growth of this sector.

On successful completion of this programme, students will have obtained the knowledge, understanding, skills and values deemed critical to shore-based personnel in the maritime industry. Graduate will be able to:

apply contemporary relevant international maritime standards in the maritime industry

demonstrate safety management in the Maritime Industry

apply risk management techniques within the specialized context of maritime operations

apply knowledge of international trade, international legal compliance, and principles of marine environmental protection with specific reference to the Caribbean region

evaluate the factors which influence maritime economics and how these apply to different trades and the various sectors of the maritime industry

develop a general understanding of one or more of the principles of Navigation, Meteorology, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Maritime Transport and Logistics

communicate effectively using standard maritime terms

rationalise ethical decisions in the maritime domain in the practice of business and entrepreneurship.

For more detailed information please contact vivian.r-parasram@utt.edu.tt or lorraine.perry@utt.edu.tt

Entry Requirements:

Passes in two (2) CAPE subjects (Units 2) or GCE A’ Level subjects in addition to General Paper OR Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies; OR

Diploma in Maritime Operations - Navigation or Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering OR STCW 95 Certificate of Competency at Operational or Management Level; OR

National Engineering Technician Diploma

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. In addition, research and development across the globe is being undertaken to develop methods to reduce carbon emissions associated with oil and gas energy. As such, over the coming decades as energy developments continue to unfold, the Energy Systems Engineering Unit of the UTT anticipates that “Renewables are here to stay, but Oil and Gas are not going away”.

The B.A.Sc. in Energy Engineering is designed to deliver the Energy Engineer best suited to adapt to the Energy Transition as described above. Graduates in Energy Engineering will have the unique capacity to pivot between the oil and gas and renewable energy industries. These graduates will be able to function as both Oil and Gas Energy Engineers and Renewable Energy Engineers and will be able to integrate the experience of traditional oil and gas companies as they transition to “Net Zero Carbon” in their operations. Furthermore, given the continually increases intensity of data driven processes, projects and decision making within the energy industry a core component of this programme is Data Science and Data Analytics. Overall the programme aims to produce graduates who can:

Produce students who are employable, and understand the fundamental principles of energy engineering so that they can successfully pursue careers as graduate engineers;

Develop the graduate’s ability to analyse open-ended problems and design solutions for Oil and Gas Energy Systems and in Renewable Energy Systems and related disciplines. This includes evaluation of associated uncertainties, risks, entrepreneurial opportunities and evaluation of societal impact;

Promote effective oral and written technical communication skills and team building skills;

Prepare graduates with engineering fundamentals to work effectively in industry

Specialisations:

Oil and Gas Energy

Renewable Energy

Programme Credits: 137

Entry Requirements:

Students can enter the B.A.Sc. in Energy Engineering from Year 1 or skip Year 1 and immediately enter Year 2 depending on their qualifications as specified below:

Entry to Year 1

Passes in a minimum of five O’ Level subjects inclusive of: Mathematics, English Language, Physics & Chemistry (CSEC General Proficiency with Grade: I, II or III using the Six-Point Grading Scheme or equivalent)

Entry to Year 2 (Skip Year 1)

Passes in A’ Level Mathematics and either Chemistry or Physics together with Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies (CAPE Unit 1 & Unit 2 or equivalent) plus O-level Physics and Chemistry.

Or 2 Year Engineering Diploma (NETD or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 2.7)

Or Mature Student Entry - An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the B.A.Sc. As communities expand, as the industrial sector grows, and as public concerns over safety become more intense, there is a need to improve the relevant skills in the security industry and in law enforcement. The main focus of a traditional Criminology programme is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behavior in the individual and in society. However, this programme is distinct as it offers a wide range of practical content and skills that are industry-driven. The Public Safety component of the B.A.Sc. offers a mixture of theory and practice, which deals with the prevention of and protection fromevents that could endanger the safety of the general public - quite important issues affecting Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean today.

Programme Credits: 125

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must possess 5 CSEC (CXC O'Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O'Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics and English Language;

OR

Diploma in Security and Public Safety, UTT;

OR

Combination of other equivalent academic qualifications / work experience may also be considered;

OR

Qualified workers from professions such as teaching, law, probation, police, prisons, fire, judiciary and business will be considered;

OR

Advanced Standing

Students with advanced standing will be awarded appropriate exemptions and transfer of credits, as determined by an appointed committee or Programme Head. This would be awarded to those students who satisfied all requirements for the Diploma in Security and Public Safety, with a minimum CGPA of 2.5, as they would have completed all of the first year requirements for the B.A.Sc.;

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme may be accepted as a Mature Student.
