U-STEP has been designed to give persons an alternative pathway into tertiary education. The dynamic portfolio of courses offered through U-STEP enables students to pursue and successfully enter a UTT programme. Students will be required to complete only the course(s) necessary to satisfy entry into their chosen programme. </p> <p> <strong>The courses offered are divided into four categories:</strong></p> <ul> <li> <strong>Foundations:</strong> English A and Mathematics</li> <li> <strong>Science:</strong> Chemistry and Physics</li> <li> <strong>Technical:</strong> Mechanical Workshop, Electrical Workshop, Engineering Drawing</li> <li> <strong>Pre-professional:</strong> Criminology, Sports Science and Academic Writing</li> </ul> <p> <strong>Benefits of pursuing U-STEP courses?</strong></p> <ul> <li> Seamless entry to tertiary education at UTT.</li> <li> Access to the university’s resources.</li> <li> A dynamic learning environment with experienced instructors.</li> <li> Remedial centres for Mathematics, Writing and Science.</li> </ul> <p> <strong>How do I use U-STEP to access my chosen UTT programme?</strong></p> <p> The programme to which you apply may refer your application to the U-STEP programme. You will be guided to take the courses needed to satisfy your entry requirements.</p> <p> <strong>What programmes are available after completing U-STEP?</strong></p> <p> Students can enter any of UTT’s Certificate, National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) and specific Bachelor programmes after successfully completing U-STEP.</p> <p> <strong>Are U-STEP courses GATE approved/funded?</strong></p> <p> U-STEP has been designed to allowstudentsto take and pay only forthe courses needed for entry into their chosen programme. GATE funding is therefore saved for their future undergraduate programme.</p> <p> <strong>Cost of the U-STEP Pathway</strong></p> <p> The cost of each U-STEP course is TT $1800.00. Successful completion of relevant U-STEP courses are required to gain entry into a UTT programme. The NETD in Chemical Engineering is a well-established engineering discipline worldwide and designed to meet the present and future demand for Chemical Engineering Technicians and highly trained Operators. Chemical and Process Engineering is about the transformation of raw materials into useful products. Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturing industry has need for a stronger knowledge base in chemical and process engineering at the technician and operator level as well as to meet the industry need for more ‘hands-on’ graduate chemical or process engineers. This is particularly important as inherent industrial and manufacturing processes, technologies and their associated instrumentation and control and quality systems are constantly modernising. This programme was the first Maritime Bachelor's degree offered within Trinidad and Tobago and is the only accredited undergraduate maritime business degree offered in the region to date. The programme answers to the recommendations of several studies on the requirements for the development of the maritime sector.  The Vision 2030 National Development Strategy 2016-2030 has identified that quality infrastructure and transportation are key facilitators for improving productivity. Maritime Services has been identified as one of seven key national economic areas being targeted for expansion and achieving global competitiveness. Vision 2030 further states that continued efforts will be placed on improving the quality of port services, increasing private investment in the maritime sector, and integrating port operations.  It is expected that suitably qualified graduates working within the maritime sector will fuel and enhance the growth of this industry through their entrepreneurship.</p> <p> The programme is targeted at persons wishing to undertake a career in the shore-based maritime industry. Maritime education is a relatively new concept in the tertiary education landscape of the region. The main focus of a traditional Criminology programme is the scientific study of the <em>nature</em>, <em>extent</em>, <em>causes</em>, and <em>control </em>of criminal behavior in the <em>individual </em>and in <em>society</em>. However, this programme is distinct as it offers a wide range of practical content and skills that are industry-driven.
