Exactly 144 years after the United States was granted freedom from Great Britain. The women’s suffrage movement, however, did not actually start until 1848, and lasted up until they were granted the right to vote in 1920. Women all over the country were fighting for their right to vote in hopes of bettering their lives. The women’s <a href='/topics/suffrage' style='color:#3174a3'>suffrage</a> movement was a long fought process by many people all over the world, over all different races, religions, even gender. (Cooney 1)<br /> The women’s suffrage movement began with the very first convention that took place in Seneca Falls. (The Women’s Rights Movement, 1848-1920. 1) Before that first<a data-href=/writing/document/PKXJVT398E7W class="document__middle white-space--normal source-serif text-l" rel="nofollow" style="cursor:pointer;white-space: normal;"> <i>&hellip;show more content&hellip;</i> </a></p></span><span class="document__preview text-l source-serif "><p class='text-ellipsis-after'>The Seneca Convention was held in Wesleyan Chapel in New York on July 19th, of 1848 and lasted until the next day, July 20th. Nearly three hundred women- and men- attended this convention, which surprised the organizers because they had only published a single advertisement about it in the local newspaper. (Lusted 12) At the end of the two-day convention, all points from both the Declaration of Sentiments and the resolutions had been approved by the women in attendance and the first major step in the fight for women’s suffrage was complete. <br /> We know that women did not have the right to vote in the United States from the time they were granted freedom from Great Britain in 1776, all the way up until 1920, but why did they not have the right to vote? Women during that 144 year span had virtually no rights at all. Many people had the mindset that since women could not fight for their country, they did not deserve the right to vote. Men viewed women as their weaknesses, not someone who is equal to <br /> (Kazee 3) that of a man, and that they did not need the right to vote. It can be traced back to 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. After two days of discussions, 100 men and women signed the Declaration of Sentiments. Drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this document called for equal treatment of women and men under the law and voting rights for women. This gathering set the agenda for the rest of the Women’s Movement long ago (Imbornoni). Over the next 100 years, many women played a part in supporting equal treatment for women, most notably leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which allowed women the right to vote.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1205 Words</li><li>5 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Womens-Movement-Of-1960s-PKLYMPYVJ">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay2"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/2000-Dbq-African-American-Democracy-851E115B32CF87CE" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">2000 Dbq African American Democracy</h2></a><ul><li>914 Words</li><li>4 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/2000-Dbq-African-American-Democracy-851E115B32CF87CE" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">2000 Dbq African American Democracy</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">During the late 1700s, women were not seen as being equal to men. They were imaged as one who stayed at home and took care of the kids. No one ever imagined a woman voting. Some women actually supported the fight in allowing blacks to vote. During the time the 15th amendment passed, many women who supported Women’s Suffrage were disappointed in which they were excluded in the idea of allowing “everyone” to vote. Before the Civil War, the movement for Women’s Suffrage started to pick up steam, but had become lost due to the interruption of the Civil War. One of the acts that stood out the most for Women’s Suffrage was the Seneca Falls Conference in 1848. This was organized by two American activists, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. They were the first to organize a conference to address Women’s rights and issues, and with sixty- eight women and thirty two men, they signed “The Declaration of Sentiments”, a document that was similar to the Declaration of Independence, but directed towards women’s rights. Getting suffrage for women was not an easy campaign. During 1890- 1919, many states were in a mix on their decision on suffrage for women. Some agreed with equal suffrage, others partial, and the rest wanted no suffrage at all for females as displayed in Document 6. Suffrage can date all the way back to 1776. Women had to fight for their rights and privileges, hard and for many years. In the late 1800’s women were seen as much less than a male and had no voice. Women were arrested, prosecuted and put down for wanting more freedom and power for their gender. As you see in many suffrage ads, women were desperate and wanted so badly the same equality as men. A few women in particular stood up for what they believed was right and fought hard. Although it took far too long and over 100 years, in 1920 women were finally given the opportunity to share the same voting rights as men. Elizabeth Cady Stanton composed the Declaration of Sentiments, modeled after the Declaration of Independence, stating that “a man should not withhold a woman&#x27;s rights, take her property or refuse to allow her to vote” (Kelly, 2011, para.3 ). The convention participants spent two days arguing and refining the content of the Declaration of Sentiments, then voted on its contents; the document received support from about one third of the delegates in attendance. The women’s rights movement in the United States started in the year 1848 with the first women’s rights convention held in Seneca Falls, New York. During this convention the ‘Declaration of sentiments’ was signed by 68 women who agreed that women deserved their own political identities. This document set forward the agenda for the women’s rights movement. In the year 1869, Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the National Women’s suffrage Association which demanded that the 15th amendment be changed to include women right to vote. In the year 1890, The National Women Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association merged to form National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Colorado was the first state to grant women the right to vote in the year 1893, followed by Utah, Idaho, Washington, California, Oregon, Kansas, Arizona, Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Nevada, New York, Michigan, South Dakota and Oklahoma. The National Association of Colored Women was formed in the year 1896 to promote the civil rights of colored women. The National Women’s Trade Union League was established in the year 1903 in order to improve the working condition for women and also to bring their wages in par with that of men.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>688 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-good-essays"><div><span>Good Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Womens-Suffrage-in-American-History-F3CYPTGSTC">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay7"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Voting-Rights-PSPG95ZQPR" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Voting Rights</h2></a><ul><li>832 Words</li><li>4 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Voting-Rights-PSPG95ZQPR" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Voting Rights</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">Women and those of color began to speak out for their right to vote and fight back against the injustices they were facing. Although women in the new republic had important roles in the family, the house, and other obligations, they were excluded from most rights. These rights included political and legal rights. Due to their gender, they have been held back because they did not have as much opportunities as the men did. The new republic made alterations in the roles of women by disparaging them in society. During this era, men received a higher status than women. Because women were forced to follow laws without being allowed to state their opinions, they tried to resist laws, fight for their freedom and strive to gain equality with men. This leads to feminism, the belief in political, social, and economic equality between men and women. It is the feminist efforts that have successfully tried to give rights that men had, to women who have been denied those rights. Upon the deprivation of those rights, the Seneca Falls convention and the Declaration of Sentiments helped women gain the privileges and opportunities to accomplish the task of equality that they have been striving for.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1967 Words</li><li>8 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/The-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-PKWXACKECF995">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay12"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-good-essays"><div><span>Good Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/The-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-P3AGHC4JFLL5" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Women &#x27;s Suffrage Movement</h2></a><ul><li>2569 Words</li><li>11 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/The-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-P3AGHC4JFLL5" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Women &#x27;s Suffrage Movement</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">&quot;Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.&quot; - the Equal Rights Amendment</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>2569 Words</li><li>11 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-good-essays"><div><span>Good Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/The-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-P3AGHC4JFLL5">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay13"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/The-Fight-For-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-FK5PYCGTK6ZKQ" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Fight For Women &#x27;s Suffrage Movement</h2></a><ul><li>1328 Words</li><li>6 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/The-Fight-For-Women-s-Suffrage-Movement-FK5PYCGTK6ZKQ" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Fight For Women &#x27;s Suffrage Movement</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">The Women’s Suffrage Movement of the 1920’s worked to grant women the right to vote nationally, thereby allowing women more political equality.
