The term is used to describe both the divine rule of God over creation and the temporal rule of human monarchs.

Divine Reign

The reign of God is a central theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing His ultimate authority and control over the universe. God's reign is eternal and unchallenged, as seen in passages like Psalm 93:1, "The LORD reigns, He is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength. Indeed, the world is firmly established; it cannot be moved." This verse highlights God's majestic and powerful rule, which is foundational to the stability of creation.

The prophetic literature often speaks of God's reign in eschatological terms, pointing to a future time when His rule will be fully realized on earth. Isaiah 52:7 proclaims, "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" This anticipates the ultimate establishment of God's kingdom, a theme echoed in the New Testament.

Christ's Reign

The New Testament reveals the reign of Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. Jesus Christ is depicted as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, whose reign is both present and future. In Revelation 11:15, it is declared, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever."

Christ's reign is inaugurated through His death, resurrection, and ascension, and it will be consummated at His second coming. Philippians 2:9-11 speaks of Christ's exaltation: "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Human Reign

The Bible also addresses the reign of human kings and leaders, often contrasting their limited and flawed rule with the perfect reign of God. The history of Israel's monarchy, beginning with Saul and continuing through David and Solomon, illustrates the complexities and challenges of human governance. While David is often upheld as a model king, his reign was not without sin and failure, as seen in his actions regarding Bathsheba and Uriah (2 Samuel 11).

The reigns of kings are frequently evaluated based on their faithfulness to God's covenant. For instance, 1 Kings 15:11 commends Asa: "Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as his father David had done." Conversely, many kings of Israel and Judah are criticized for leading the people into idolatry and disobedience.

Theological Implications

The concept of reign in the Bible underscores the tension between divine sovereignty and human responsibility. While God is the ultimate ruler, He allows human leaders to exercise authority, holding them accountable for their actions. This dynamic is evident in the biblical narrative, where the success or failure of a king often reflects the spiritual state of the nation.

The reign of God and Christ offers believers hope and assurance, as it points to a future where justice, peace, and righteousness will prevail. The call for Christians is to live under the lordship of Christ, acknowledging His reign in their lives and anticipating the full realization of His kingdom.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. The verb is malakh, "to be king" ("to reign as king"), "to become king," "to accede to the throne," "to assume royal power publicly" and, generally speaking, "to become powerful." In the New Testament hegemonia, basileia, basileuein. The word is used, either as a noun or as a verb, of Yahweh (God), the Messiah (Christ) and men (kings, etc.); then of such terms as sin, death, grace; of the woman in Revelation and, conditionally, of the Christians; once, ironically, of the Corinthians. "Reign" as a noun referring to the time of reigning occurs in 1 Kings 6:1 (Solomon); 2 Kings 24:12 (Nebuchadnezzar); 1 Chronicles 4:31 (David; compare 1 Chronicles 29:30); 2 Chronicles 36:20 ("until the reign of the kingdom of Persia"); Nehemiah 12:22 (Darius); Esther 2:16 (Ahasuerus); Luke 3:1 (Tiberius Caesar). Sin, the vitiating mental factor, is to be looked upon as being constantly and resolutely bent on maintaining or regaining its hold upon man, its power being exercised and reinforced by the lusts of the body. Death, the logical outcome of sin, at once testifies to the power of sin and its inherent corruption, while grace is the restoring spiritual factor following up and combating everywhere and always the pernicious influence of sin. It strives to dethrone sin, and to establish itself in man as the only dominating force.

(5) In describing the future glorious state of the believers, the New Testament uses the expression of those who endure (in faith; compare 2 Timothy 2:12); of those `purchased unto God with the blood of the Lamb' (Revelation 5:10); of those partaking in the first resurrection (Revelation 20:6); of the servants of God, "they shall reign for ever and ever" (Revelation 22:5); on the other hand, it teaches us not to anticipate the privileges of heaven, while our Christian life is anything but satisfactory (1 Corinthians 4:8), and Revelation 17:18 shows us the terrible fate of the woman, the great city (the corrupt church), "which reigneth over the kings of the earth."

See further KING, KINGDOM.

William Baur

Greek
936. basileuo -- to be king, reign
... to be king, reign.
