Along with preservation of cultural heritage, museums can play significant role in propagating cultural awareness through its various indoor and outdoor activities. In this respect, New Museum Movements through Action Museological approach will be very useful and effective. Ethnomuseography and Action Museology is a suitable answer for cultural sustainability to rescue from the situation of cultural vacuum. Proper documentation of various cultures utilizing ethnographical and ethnomuseographical techniques are required to have proper holistic preservation and representation. Ethnographical museums in India have emerged as vibrant institutions providing a link between the present and past. A perfect combination of Ethnomuseograpical and Action Museological practices would be a key to the preservation and propagation of cultural heritage, which will result in mass awareness and development of sense of pride for indigenous cultures. Now, ethnographic museums must move ahead from cultural preservation and supplementary informal educational institutions to centers of generating cultural awareness and sense of pride for indigenous This article speaks of the new dimensions added to the movement for harnessing the museums to the revitalization of the living museums of community habitats. The initiatives undertaken by the author over several decades have been directed towards using this approach for linking livelihood sustenance strategies of Development Departments of the Government with indigenous cultural management traditions. The details regarding the active role of anthropological museums, especially the various aspects and modes of dissemination of knowledge and their significance with respect to preservation, education, and awareness are discussed here keeping in mind the changing perspective and vision of Indian museums in the present age of professionalism. Now the Anthropological museums are developing as a supplementary educational, preservation and research institution. But still museums need to develop a lot to become more productive in terms of its main output that is its visitor friendly services.
