you shall send<MH7971> a man<MH376> from each<MH376, 259> of their fathers’<MH1> tribes<MH4294>, every<MH3605> one<MH3605> a leader<MH5387a> among them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> sent<MH7971> them from the wilderness<MH4057b> of Paran<MH6290> at the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>command<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>, all<MH3605> of them men<MH376> who were heads<MH7218> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>These<MH428> then <i>were</i> their names<MH8034>: from the tribe<MH4294> of Reuben<MH7205>, Shammua<MH8051> the son<MH1121> of Zaccur<MH2139>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>from the tribe<MH4294> of Dan<MH1835>, Ammiel<MH5988> the son<MH1121> of Gemalli<MH1582>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>from the tribe<MH4294> of Asher<MH836>, Sethur<MH5639> the son<MH1121> of Michael<MH4317>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>from the tribe<MH4294> of Naphtali<MH5321>, Nahbi<MH5147> the son<MH1121> of Vophsi<MH2058>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><i>and</i> from the tribe<MH4294> of Gad<MH1410>, Geuel<MH1345> the son<MH1121> of Machi<MH4352>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>These<MH428> are the names<MH8034> of the men<MH376> whom<MH834> Moses<MH4872> sent<MH7971> to spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>; but Moses<MH4872> called<MH7121> Hoshea<MH1954> the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Joshua<MH3091>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When Moses<MH4872> sent<MH7971> them to spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, he said<MH559> to them, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> there<MH2088> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Negev<MH5045>; then go<MH5927> up<MH5927> into the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>See<MH7200> what<MH4100> the land<MH776> is <i>like,</i> and whether the people<MH5971a> who live<MH3427> in it are strong<MH2389> or weak<MH7504b>, whether they are few<MH4592> or<MH518> many<MH7227a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And how<MH4100> is the land<MH776> in which<MH834> they live<MH3427>, is it good<MH2896a> or<MH518> bad<MH7451a>? And how<MH4100> are the cities<MH5892b> in which<MH834, 1992a> they live<MH3427>, are <i>the people</i> in <i>open</i> camps<MH4264> or<MH518> in fortifications<MH4013>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And how<MH4100> is the land<MH776>, is it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>productive<MH8082a> or<MH518> unproductive<MH7330>? Are<MH3426> there<MH3426> trees<MH6086> in it or<MH518> not? And show<MH2388> yourselves courageous<MH2388> and get<MH3947> some<MH4480> of the fruit<MH6529> of the land<MH776>.” Now the time<MH3117> was the season<MH3117> of the first<MH1061> ripe<MH1061> grapes<MH6025>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So they went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and spied<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776> from the wilderness<MH4057b> of Zin<MH6790> as far<MH5704> as Rehob<MH7340>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>at Lebo-hamath<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When they had gone<MH5927> up<MH5927> into the Negev<MH5045>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>they came<MH935> to Hebron<MH2275a> where<MH8033> Ahiman<MH289>, Sheshai<MH8344>, and Talmai<MH8526>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>descendants<MH3211> of Anak<MH6061> were. (Hebron<MH2275a> was built<MH1129> seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> before<MH6440> Zoan<MH6814> in Egypt<MH4714>.) <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then they came<MH935> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Valley<MH5158a> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Eshcol<MH812>, and from there<MH8033> they cut<MH3772> off<MH3772> a branch<MH2156> with a single<MH259> cluster<MH811> of grapes<MH6025>; and they carried<MH5375> it on a pole<MH4132> between two<MH8147> <i>men,</i> with some<MH4480> of the pomegranates<MH7416> and the figs<MH8384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>That place<MH4725> was called<MH7121> the Valley<MH5158a> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Eshcol<MH812>, because<MH5921, 182> of the cluster<MH811> which<MH834> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cut<MH3772> off<MH3772> from there<MH8033>. <p class="hdg">The Spies’ Reports</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>When they returned<MH7725> from spying<MH8446> out<MH8446> the land<MH776>, at the end<MH7093> of forty<MH705> days<MH3117>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>they went<MH1980> on and came<MH935> to Moses<MH4872> and Aaron<MH175> and to all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Paran<MH6290> at Kadesh<MH6946>; and they brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> word<MH1697> to them and to all<MH3605> the congregation<MH5712>, and showed<MH7200> them the fruit<MH6529> of the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So they reported<MH5608> to him and said<MH559>, “We came<MH935> into the land<MH776> where<MH834> you sent<MH7971> us, and it certainly<MH1571> does flow<MH2100> with milk<MH2461> and honey<MH1706>, and this<MH2088> is its fruit<MH6529>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Nevertheless<MH657, 3588>, the people<MH5971a> who live<MH3427> in the land<MH776> are strong<MH5794>, and the cities<MH5892b> are fortified<MH1219> <i>and</i> very<MH3966> large<MH1419>.
