The purpose of this study was to determine the 50 most cited articles in shoulder surgery and their characteristics. Methods: Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for citations of articles published in any of the 61 journals in the category \u0026amp;#39;\u0026amp;#39;Orthopedics.\u0026amp;#39;\u0026amp;#39; Each of the journals was searched to determine the 50 most often cited articles specific to shoulder surgery. The following characteristics were determined for each article: authors, year of publication, source journal, geographic origin, article type, and level of evidence for clinical articles. Citation density (total number of citations/years since publication) was also determined. Results: The number of citations ranged from 1211 to 192. The 50 most often cited articles were published in 8 journals. The majority of the articles (42) were clinical, with the remaining representing some type of basic science research. The most common level of evidence was IV (23). The mean number of citations for methodologic articles (437 citations per article) was greater than that for non-methodologic articles (301 citations per article) (P ¼ .034). Conclusions: Articles that introduced instruments for outcome evaluation or that introduced classification systems (methodologic) were highly cited regardless of the date of publication. The top 50 list presented provides residency and fellowship directors with a group of \u0026amp;#39;\u0026amp;#39;classic\u0026amp;#39;\u0026amp;#39; articles in the subspecialty of ortho-pedic The Thomson ISIWeb of Science was searched with the following search terms: “shoulder arthroplasty”, “shoulder replacement”, “shoulder prosthesis” and “shoulder implant”. All papers dealing with SA, including its perioperative and postoperative management, were included in this study. Citations ranged from 797 to 52 for the 50 highest cited papers on SA. According to absolute numbers, the top 10 papers were cited at least 118 times. Overall, 78% (n = 43) were clinical and the remaining articles were basic science research (one anatomic, six biomechanical). The most prevalent level of evidence was IV (72%). The term evidence-based medicine is more recent, appearing for the first time in 1992. To analyze the articles on Shoulder and Elbow Surgery published by Brazilian authors between 2008 and 2017. METHODS: Two researchers independently performed a search of journal articles on Shoulder and Elbow Surgery published by Brazilian authors in two orthopedic journals: Brazilian Journal of Orthopedics (RBO) and Brazilian Orthopedic Act (Acta) between 2008 and 2017. A third researcher searched PUBMED for Brazilian Shoulder and Elbow Surgery specialists to identify relevant articles in other national and international journals. After selection, the articles were classified by the level of evidence based on the classification proposed by the Oxford Center for Evidence-based Medicine. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2017, 333 articles on Shoulder and Elbow surgeries were published by Brazilian authors in national and international journals. Of these, 93 were published in international journals, 24 in national journals (excluding Acta and RBO), 172 in the Brazilian Journal of Orthopedics, and 44 in the Acta Ortopédica Magazine. Authors from the state of São Paulo accounted for about 68% of the articles. There was a predominance of articles with a level of evidence of 4 and 5, and of the works with level 1, 66.7% were published in international journals. Methods A web questionnaire was developed including four clinical scenarios of shoulder pathologies. Subsequently, opinions were solicited from more than 1,000 members of an international association of surgeons specialized in sports traumatology and knee surgery (ESSKA). Results The response rate was 40% (412 questionnaires). For scenario 1, first anterior dislocation of the shoulder, the most indicated treatment for 71% of respondents was an arthroscopic Bankart repair (P \ 0.001). For scenario 2, shoulder arthritis with concentric erosion and cuff tear, 38% chose a shoulder replacement, while 37% preferred a supraspinatus tendon repair in combination with long head of biceps (LHB) tenodesis or tenotomy. For scenario 3, large tendon tears with 70% fatty infiltration of the infraspinatus tendon and lateral LHB instability, 70% of surgeons considered that, among conservative treatments, hyaluronic acid injection was not an appropriate management. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic acromioplasty, and LHB tenotomy gained larger consensus (81, 80, and 79% of respondents, respectively). A double-row technique for rotator cuff repair was preferred to a singlerow technique (P = 0.02). Scenario 4, adhesive capsulitis, split the respondents equally, with 51% in favor of a surgical approach and 49% in favor of a conservative approach (N.S.). Conclusions On-line questionnaires have the potential to improve knowledge about current trends in clinical practice and can help orthopedic surgeons to develop guidelines. We furthermore wished to determine whether there is any difference between a categorical "journal-by-journal" analysis and an "all-database" analysis in arthroscopic surgery and whether such a search methodology would alter the results of previously published lists of "citation classics" in the field. We analyzed the characteristics of these articles to determine what qualities make an article important to this subspecialty of orthopaedic surgery. Methods: Web of Knowledge was searched on March 7, 2011, using the term "arthroscopy" for citations to articles related to arthroscopy in 61 orthopaedic journals and using the all-database function. Each of the 61 orthopaedic journals was searched separately for arthroscopy-related articles to determine the 25 most cited articles. An all-database search for arthroscopy-related articles was carried out and compared with a journal-by-journal search. Each article was reviewed for basic information including the type of article, authorship, institution, country, publishing journal, and year published. Results: The number of citations ranged from 189 to 567 in a journal-by-journal search and from 214 to 1,869 in an all-database search. The 25 most cited articles on arthroscopic surgery were published in 11 journals: 8 orthopaedic journals and 3 journals from other specialties. The most cited article in arthroscopic orthopaedic surgery was published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which was not previously identified by a journal-by-journal search. Conclusions: An all-database search in Web of Knowledge gives a more in-depth methodology of determining the true citation ranking of articles. Among the top 25 most cited articles, autologous chondrocyte implantation/transplantation is currently the most cited and most popular topic in arthroscopic orthopaedic surgery and research. British volume, 2010</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The credibility and creativity of an author may be gauged by the number of scientific papers he or she has published, as well as the frequency of citations of a particular paper reflecting the impact of the data on the area of practice. The object of this study was to identify and analyse the qualities of the top 100 cited papers in orthopaedic surgery. The database of the Science Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information (1945 to 2008) was used. A total of 1490 papers were cited more than 100 times, with the top 100 being subjected to further analysis. The majority originated in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom. The top 100 papers were published in seven specific orthopaedic journals.
