From one hour to the next, from one hill to the next, they can exhibit a dramatic variation in weather conditions. Whether it's a well-planned expedition or a spur-of-the-moment decision to go to the hills, it is important to check the forecast. </p> <p>Britain has seven 'main' mountainous areas, which have been declared as such because of their high visitor numbers. These areas welcome thousands of visitors every year to take in the scenery, admire the wildlife and - most often - challenge some of the peaks.</p> <p>Despite their popularity, mountain ranges are some of the most dangerous territories on offer in Britain and can be perilous for the woefully under-prepared. It's worth ensuring that it's not only physical kit that is sorted ahead of time, but also knowledge and understanding of the local area and variety of weather.</p> <p class="noText">Mountain forecasts are provided for the main mountain areas and those which have the highest visitor figures.
