countries, forest fires are recurrent events that need to be considered as a central component of regional and global forest management strategies and biodiversity restoration programmes. The response of tree function to fire damage can vary widely, also taking into account species, season, age of the tree, etc. Trees that survive fire may have different levels of physiological functionality, which may result in reduced growth or increased susceptibility to delayed mortality. An approach to assessing irreversible physiological injury in trees could help to inform management decisions at burned sites for biodiversity restoration, environmental safety and understanding of ecosystem functional adaptations. Physiological proxies for latent tree mortality, such as cambial cell death, reduced or absent starch and soluble sugar content in C sinks, and ethanol accumulation in the phloem, are considered proxies for cell death. However, their determination requires time-consuming laboratory protocols, making the approach unfeasible as a practical option in the field, but recent findings have shown that biosensors could be usefully applied to overcome these limitations. The study will focus on the development of amperometric biosensors capable of detecting a few target molecules in the phloem and xylem (such as ethanol and glucose) that have recently been identified as proxies for latent tree mortality. The results of a specific experiment on a stand of Pinus pinaster subjected to prescribed fire are reported. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=enzymes" title="enzymes">enzymes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glucose" title=" glucose"> glucose</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ethanol" title=" ethanol"> ethanol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prescribed%20fires" title=" prescribed fires"> prescribed fires</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192627/monitoring-of-latent-tree-mortality-after-forest-fires-a-biosensor-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192627.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">17</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">19</span> Research Project of National Interest (PRIN-PNRR) DIVAS: Developing Methods to Assess Tree Vitality after a Wildfire through Analyses of Cambium Sugar Metabolism</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudia%20Cocozza">Claudia Cocozza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Niccol%C3%B2%20Frassinelli"> Niccolò Frassinelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Enrico%20Marchi"> Enrico Marchi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cristiano%20Foderi"> Cristiano Foderi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Bizzarri"> Alessandro Bizzarri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Margherita%20Paladini"> Margherita Paladini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Laura%20Traversi"> Maria Laura Traversi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eleftherious%20Touloupakis"> Eleftherious Touloupakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Giovannelli"> Alessio Giovannelli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The development of tools to quickly identify the fate of injured trees after stress is highly relevant when biodiversity restoration of damaged sites is based on nature-based solutions. In this context, an approach to assess irreversible physiological damages within trees could help to support planning management decisions of perturbed sites to restore biodiversity, for the safety of the environment and understanding functionality adjustments of the ecosystems. Tree vitality can be estimated by a series of physiological proxies like cambium activity, starch, and soluble sugars amount in C-sinks whilst the accumulation of ethanol within the cambial cells and phloem is considered an alert of cell death. However, their determination requires time-consuming laboratory protocols, which makes the approach unfeasible as a practical option in the field. The project aims to develop biosensors to assess the concentration of soluble sugars and ethanol in stem tissues. Soluble sugars and ethanol concentrations will be used to define injured trees to discriminate compromised and recovering trees in the forest directly. To reach this goal, we select study sites subjected to prescribed fires or recent wildfires as experimental set-ups. Indeed, in Mediterranean countries, forest fire is a recurrent event that must be considered as a central component of regional and global strategies in forest management and biodiversity restoration programs. A biosensor will be developed through a multistep process related to target analytes characterization, bioreceptor selection, and, finally, calibration/testing of the sensor. To validate biosensor signals, soluble sugars and ethanol will be quantified by HPLC and GC using synthetic media (in lab) and phloem sap (in field) whilst cambium vitality will be assessed by anatomical observations. On burnt trees, the stem growth will be monitored by dendrometers and/or estimated by tree ring analyses, whilst the tree response to past fire events will be assessed by isotopic discrimination. Moreover, the fire characterization and the visual assessment procedure will be used to assign burnt trees to a vitality class. At the end of the project, a well-defined procedure combining biosensor signal and visual assessment will be produced and applied to a study case. The project outcomes and the results obtained will be properly packaged to reach, engage and address the needs of the final users and widely shared with relevant stakeholders involved in the optimal use of biosensors and in the management of post-fire areas. Typically, UAV architectures use the civilian GPS, which is exposed to a number of different attacks, such as jamming or spoofing. This is why it is important to develop alternative methodologies to accurately estimate the actual UAV position without relying on GPS measurements only. In this paper, we propose a position estimate method for UAVs based on monocular visual odometry. We have developed a flight control system capable of keeping track of the entire trajectory travelled, with a reduced dependency on the availability of GPS signals. Moreover, the simplicity of the developed solution makes it applicable to a wide range of commercial drones. The final goal is to allow for safer flights in all conditions, even under cyber-attacks trying to deceive the drone. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20odometry" title="visual odometry">visual odometry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20uav" title=" autonomous uav"> autonomous uav</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=position%20measurement" title=" position measurement"> position measurement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20outdoor%20flight" title=" autonomous outdoor flight"> autonomous outdoor flight</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139336/visual-odometry-and-trajectory-reconstruction-for-uavs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139336.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">217</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> The Influence of Directionality on the Giovanelli Illusion</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michele%20Sinico">Michele Sinico</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the Giovanelli illusion, some collinear dots appear misaligned, when each dot lies within a circle and the circles are not collinear. In this illusion, the role of the frame of reference, determined by the circles, is considered a crucial factor. Three experiments were carried out to study the influence of directionality of the circles on the misalignment. The adjustment method was used. Participants changed the orthogonal position of each dot, from the left to the right of the sequence, until a collinear sequence of dots was achieved. The first experiment verified the illusory effect of the misalignment. In the second experiment, the influence of two different directionalities of the circles (-0.58° and +0.58°) on the misalignment was tested. The results show an over-normalization on the sequences of the dots. The third experiment tested the misalignment of the dots without any inclination of the sequence of circles (0°). Only a local illusory effect was found. These results demonstrate that the directionality of the circles, as a global factor, can increase the misalignment. The findings also indicate that directionality and the frame of reference are independent factors in explaining the Giovanelli illusion. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovannelli%20illusion" title="Giovannelli illusion">Giovannelli illusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20illusion" title=" visual illusion"> visual illusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=directionality" title=" directionality"> directionality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=misalignment" title=" misalignment"> misalignment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20frame%20of%20reference" title=" the frame of reference"> the frame of reference</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95941/the-influence-of-directionality-on-the-giovanelli-illusion" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95941.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">178</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> Development of a One-Window Services Model for Accessing Cancer Immunotherapies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rizwan%20Arshad">Rizwan Arshad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Panza"> Alessio Panza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nimra%20Inayat"> Nimra Inayat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Syeda%20Mariam%20Batool%20Kazmi"> Syeda Mariam Batool Kazmi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shawana%20Azmat"> Shawana Azmat</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The rapidly expanding use of immunotherapy for a wide range of cancers from late to early stages has, predictably, been accompanied by evidence of inequities in access to these highly effective but costly treatments. It is evaluated in the order of 15% of the total electricity production taking refrigeration and air-conditioning into consideration. For this reason, in the last years several energy saving techniques have been proposed to reduce the power demand of such plants. The paper deals with the development of an innovative internal recovery system for cryogenic cooling plants. Such a system consists in a Compressor-Expander Group (CEG) designed on the basis of the automotive turbocharging technology. In particular, the paper is focused on the design of the expander, the critical component of the CEG system. Due to the low volumetric flow entering the expander and the high expansion ratio, a commercial turbocharger expander wheel was strongly modified. It was equipped with a transonic nozzle, designed to have a radially inflow full admission. To verify the performance of such a machine and suggest improvements, two different set of nozzles have been designed and modelled by means of the commercial Ansys-CFX software. steady-state 3D CFD simulations of the second-generation prototype are presented and compared with the initial ones. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vapour%20cCompression%20systems" title="vapour cCompression systems">vapour cCompression systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20saving" title=" energy saving"> energy saving</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=refrigeration%20plant" title=" refrigeration plant"> refrigeration plant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organic%20fluids" title=" organic fluids"> organic fluids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20turbine" title=" radial turbine"> radial turbine</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46475/internal-power-recovery-in-cryogenic-cooling-plants-part-i-expander-development" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46475.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">208</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">14</span> A Guide to the Implementation of Ambisonics Super Stereo</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Mastrorillo">Alessio Mastrorillo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giuseppe%20Silvi"> Giuseppe Silvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesco%20Scagliola"> Francesco Scagliola</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this work, we introduce an Ambisonics decoder with an implementation of the C-format, also called Super Stereo. This format is an alternative to conventional stereo and binaural decoding. Unlike those, this format conveys audio information from the horizontal plane and works with stereo speakers and headphones. The two C-format channels can also return a reconstructed planar B-format. This work provides an open-source implementation for this format. We implement an all-pass filter for signal quadrature, as required by the decoding equations. This filter works with six Biquads in a cascade configuration, with values for control frequency and quality factor discovered experimentally. The phase response of the filter delivers a small error in the 20-14.000Hz range. Human centred design methods are being more frequently applied to automotive research, including the use of systems to detect human emotions in real-time. One method for a non-contact measurement of emotion with low intrusiveness is Facial-Expression Analysis (FEA). This paper describes a research study investigating emotional responses of 22 participants in a naturalistic driving environment by applying a multi-method approach. The research explored the possibility to investigate emotional responses and their frequencies during naturalistic driving through real-time FEA. Observational analysis was conducted to assign causes to the collected emotional responses. In total, 730 emotional responses were measured in the collective study time of 440 minutes. Causes were assigned to 92% of the measured emotional responses. This research establishes and validates a methodology for the study of emotions and their causes in the driving environment through which systems and factors causing positive and negative emotional effects can be identified. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=affective%20computing" title="affective computing">affective computing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=case%20study" title=" case study"> case study</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emotion%20recognition" title=" emotion recognition"> emotion recognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20computer%20interaction" title=" human computer interaction"> human computer interaction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90955/automotive-emotions-an-investigation-of-their-natures-frequencies-of-occurrence-and-causes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90955.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">203</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Drivers for Relationship Building in the Supply Chain: The Case of Luxury Food</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kateryna%20Merkulova">Kateryna Merkulova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Castello"> Alessio Castello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Kreuzer"> Maria Kreuzer</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This research investigates the drivers of long-term relationship building between customers and suppliers within the luxury food supply chain, a topic that remains largely unexplored in the current state of academic literature. This paper identifies for the first time the key elements that influence the formation and maintenance of effective supply chain relationships, which are crucial for navigating the complexities of the luxury food industry. In particular, it explores the critical role of trust in a business-to-business context, specifically emphasizing its significance in the luxury food supply chain. Empirically, this research is contextualized in the region of the French Riviera, which offers a gastronomic playground for food enthusiasts, making it ideally suited to explore the luxury food sector. Qualitative in-depth interviews with stakeholders along the luxury supply chain (i.e., suppliers, chefs, restaurant owners, and fine food shop managers) allow identifying key drivers of trustful business relationships. Triangulating different perspectives of stakeholders within the luxury supply chain adds validity and robustness to the findings. The findings have important theoretical and managerial implications for the effective functioning of long-term supplier-buyer relationships. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=luxury%20food" title="luxury food">luxury food</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=relationship%20building" title=" relationship building"> relationship building</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=B2B" title=" B2B"> B2B</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supply%20chain" title=" supply chain"> supply chain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trust" title=" trust"> trust</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183459/drivers-for-relationship-building-in-the-supply-chain-the-case-of-luxury-food" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183459.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">52</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Biotechnological Recycling of Apple By-Products: A Reservoir Model to Produce a Dietary Supplement Fortified with Biogenic Phenolic Compounds</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Zein%20Aalabiden%20Tlais">Ali Zein Aalabiden Tlais</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Da%20Ros"> Alessio Da Ros</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pasquale%20Filannino"> Pasquale Filannino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olimpia%20Vincentini"> Olimpia Vincentini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Gobbetti"> Marco Gobbetti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raffaella%20Di%20Cagno"> Raffaella Di Cagno</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study is an example of apple by-products (AP) recycling through a designed fermentation by selected autochthonous Lactobacillus plantarum AFI5 and Lactobacillus fabifermentans ALI6 used singly or as binary cultures with the selected Saccharomyces cerevisiae AYI7. Compared to Raw-, Unstarted- and Chemically Acidified-AP, Fermented-AP promoted the highest levels of total and insoluble dietary fibers, antioxidant activity, and free phenolics. The binary culture of L. plantarum AFI5 and S. cerevisiae AYI7 had the best effect on the bioavailability phenolic compounds as resulted by the Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry validated method. The accumulation of phenolic acid derivatives highlighted microbial metabolism during AP fermentation. Bio-converted phenolic compounds were likely responsible for the increased antioxidant activity. The potential health-promoting effects of Fermented-AP were highlighted using Caco-2 cells. With variations among single and binary cultures, fermented-AP counteracted the inflammatory processes and the effects of oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells and preserved the integrity of tight junctions. An alternative and suitable model for food by-products recycling to manufacture a dietary supplement fortified with biogenic compounds was proposed. Highlighting the microbial metabolism of several phenolic compounds, undoubted additional value to such downstream wastes was created. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=apple%20by-products" title="apple by-products">apple by-products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antioxidant" title=" antioxidant"> antioxidant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fermentation" title=" fermentation"> fermentation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phenolic%20compounds" title=" phenolic compounds"> phenolic compounds</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128471/biotechnological-recycling-of-apple-by-products-a-reservoir-model-to-produce-a-dietary-supplement-fortified-with-biogenic-phenolic-compounds" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128471.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">141</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Exploring the Use of Drones for Corn Borer Management: A Case Study in Central Italy</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luana%20Centorame">Luana Centorame</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Ilari"> Alessio Ilari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Giustozzi"> Marco Giustozzi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ester%20Foppa%20Pedretti"> Ester Foppa Pedretti</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Maize is one of the most important agricultural cash crops in the world, involving three different chains: food, feed, and bioenergy production. Nowadays, the European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis, to the best of the author's knowledge, is the most important pest to control for maize growers. The ECB is harmful to maize; young larvae are responsible for minor damage to the leaves, while the most serious damage is tunneling by older larvae that burrow into the stock. Soon after, larvae can affect cobs, and it was found that ECB can foster mycotoxin contamination; this is why it is crucial to control it. There are multiple control methods available: agronomic, biological, and microbiological means, agrochemicals, and genetically modified plants. Meanwhile, the European Union’s policy focuses on the transition to sustainable supply chains and translates into the goal of reducing the use of agrochemicals by 50%. The current work aims to compare the agrochemical treatment of ECB and biological control through beneficial insects released by drones. The methodology used includes field trials of both chemical and biological control, considering a farm in central Italy as a case study. To assess the mechanical and technical efficacy of drones with respect to standard machinery, the available literature was consulted. The findings are positive because drones allow them to get in the field promptly, in difficult conditions and with lower costs if compared to traditional techniques. At the same time, it is important to consider the limits of drones regarding pilot certification, no-fly zones, etc. In the future, it will be necessary to deepen the topic with the real application in the field of both systems, expanding the scenarios in which drones can be used and the type of material distributed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=beneficial%20insects" title="beneficial insects">beneficial insects</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corn%20borer%20management" title=" corn borer management"> corn borer management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drones" title=" drones"> drones</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=precision%20agriculture" title=" precision agriculture"> precision agriculture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176453/exploring-the-use-of-drones-for-corn-borer-management-a-case-study-in-central-italy" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176453.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">103</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> Optimum Turbomachine Preliminary Selection for Power Regeneration in Vapor Compression Cool Production Plants</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sayyed%20Benyamin%20Alavi">Sayyed Benyamin Alavi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanni%20Cerri"> Giovanni Cerri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Leila%20Chennaoui"> Leila Chennaoui</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ambra%20Giovannelli"> Ambra Giovannelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefano%20Mazzoni"> Stefano Mazzoni </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Primary energy consumption and emissions of pollutants (including CO2) sustainability call to search methodologies to lower power absorption for unit of a given product. Cool production plants based on vapour compression are widely used for many applications: air conditioning, food conservation, domestic refrigerators and freezers, special industrial processes, etc. In the field of cool production, the amount of Yearly Consumed Primary Energy is enormous, thus, saving some percentage of it, leads to big worldwide impact in the energy consumption and related energy sustainability. Among various techniques to reduce power required by a Vapour Compression Cool Production Plant (VCCPP), the technique based on Power Regeneration by means of Internal Direct Cycle (IDC) will be considered in this paper. Power produced by IDC reduces power need for unit of produced Cool Power by the VCCPP. The paper contains basic concepts that lead to develop IDCs and the proposed options to use the IDC Power. Among various selections for using turbo machines, Best Economically Available Technologies (BEATs) have been explored. Based on vehicle engine turbochargers, they have been taken into consideration for this application. According to BEAT Database and similarity rules, the best turbo machine selection leads to the minimum nominal power required by VCCPP Main Compressor. Results obtained installing the prototype in “ad hoc” designed test bench will be discussed and compared with the expected performance. Forecasts for the upgrading VCCPP, various applications will be given and discussed. 4-6% saving is expected for air conditioning cooling plants and 15-22% is expected for cryogenic plants. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Refrigeration%20Plant" title="Refrigeration Plant">Refrigeration Plant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vapour%20Pressure%20Amplifier" title=" Vapour Pressure Amplifier"> Vapour Pressure Amplifier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Compressor" title=" Compressor"> Compressor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Expander" title=" Expander"> Expander</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Turbine" title=" Turbine"> Turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Turbomachinery%20Selection" title=" Turbomachinery Selection"> Turbomachinery Selection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Power%20Saving" title=" Power Saving "> Power Saving </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17883/optimum-turbomachine-preliminary-selection-for-power-regeneration-in-vapor-compression-cool-production-plants" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17883.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">426</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> Internal Power Recovery in Cryogenic Cooling Plants, Part II: Compressor Development</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ambra%20Giovannelli">Ambra Giovannelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erika%20Maria%20Archilei"> Erika Maria Archilei</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The electrical power consumption related to refrigeration systems is evaluated to be in the order of 15% of the total electricity consumption worldwide. For this reason, in the last years several energy saving techniques have been suggested to reduce the power demand of refrigeration and air conditioning plants. The research work deals with the development of an innovative internal power recovery system for industrial cryogenic cooling plants. Such system is based on a Compressor-Expander Group (CEG). Both the expander and the compressor have been designed starting from automotive turbocharging components, strongly modified to take refrigerant fluid properties and specific system requirements into consideration. A preliminary choice of the machines (radial compressors and expanders) among existing components available on the market was realised according to the rules of the similarity theory. Once the expander was selected, it was strongly modified and performance verified by means of steady-state 3D CFD simulations. This paper focuses the attention on the development of the second CEG main component: the compressor. Once the preliminary selection has been done, the compressor geometry has been modified to take the new boundary conditions into account. In particular, the impeller has been machined to address the required total enthalpy increase. Such evaluation has been carried out by means of a simplified 1D model. Moreover, a vaneless diffuser has been added, modifying the shape of casing rear and front disks. To verify the performance of the modified compressor geometry and suggest improvements, a numerical fluid dynamic model has been set up and the commercial Ansys-CFX software has been used to perform steady-state 3D simulations. In this work, all the numerical results will be shown, highlighting critical aspects and suggesting further developments to increase compressor performance and flexibility. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vapour%20compression%20systems" title="vapour compression systems">vapour compression systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20saving" title=" energy saving"> energy saving</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=refrigeration%20plant" title=" refrigeration plant"> refrigeration plant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organic%20fluids" title=" organic fluids"> organic fluids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=centrifugal%20compressor" title=" centrifugal compressor"> centrifugal compressor</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46476/internal-power-recovery-in-cryogenic-cooling-plants-part-ii-compressor-development" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46476.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">217</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> High-Pressure Steam Turbine for Medium-Scale Concentrated Solar Power Plants </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ambra%20Giovannelli">Ambra Giovannelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Coriolano%20Salvini"> Coriolano Salvini</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Many efforts have been spent in the design and development of Concentrated Solar Power (CPS) Plants worldwide. Most of them are for on-grid electricity generation and they are large plants which can benefit from the economies of scale. Nevertheless, several potential applications for Small and Medium-Scale CSP plants can be relevant in the industrial sector as well as for off-grid purposes (i.e. in rural contexts). In a wide range of industrial processes, CSP technologies can be used for heat generation replacing conventional primary sources. For such market, proven technologies (usually hybrid solutions) already exist: more than 100 installations, especially in developing countries, are in operation and performance can be verified. On the other hand, concerning off-grid applications, solar technologies are not so mature. Even if the market offers a potential deployment of such systems, especially in countries where the access to grid is strongly limited, optimized solutions have not been developed yet. In this context, steam power plants can be taken into consideration for medium scale installations, due to the recent results achieved with direct steam generation systems based on paraboloidal dish or Fresnel lens solar concentrators. Steam at 4.0-4.5 MPa and 500°C can be produced directly by means of innovative solar receivers (some prototypes already exist). Although it could seem a promising technology, presently, steam turbines commercially available do not cover the required cycle specifications. In particular, while low-pressure turbines already exist on the market, high-pressure groups, necessary for the abovementioned applications, are not available. The present paper deals with the preliminary design of a high-pressure steam turbine group for a medium-scale CSP plant (200-1000 kWe). Such a group is arranged in a single geared package composed of four radial expander wheels. Such wheels have been chosen on the basis of automotive turbocharging technology and then modified to take the new requirements into account. Results related to the preliminary geometry selection and to the analysis of the high-pressure turbine group performance are reported and widely discussed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concentrated%20solar%20power%20%28CSP%29%20plants" title="concentrated solar power (CSP) plants">concentrated solar power (CSP) plants</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=steam%20turbine" title=" steam turbine"> steam turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20turbine" title=" radial turbine"> radial turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medium-scale%20power%20plants" title=" medium-scale power plants "> medium-scale power plants </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46732/high-pressure-steam-turbine-for-medium-scale-concentrated-solar-power-plants" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46732.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">217</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Heterogeneous-Resolution and Multi-Source Terrain Builder for CesiumJS WebGL Virtual Globe</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Umberto%20Di%20Staso">Umberto Di Staso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Soave"> Marco Soave</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Giori"> Alessio Giori</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federico%20Prandi"> Federico Prandi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raffaele%20De%20Amicis"> Raffaele De Amicis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The increasing availability of information about earth surface elevation (Digital Elevation Models DEM) generated from different sources (remote sensing, Aerial Images, Lidar) poses the question about how to integrate and make available to the most than possible audience this huge amount of data. In order to exploit the potential of 3D elevation representation the quality of data management plays a fundamental role. Due to the high acquisition costs and the huge amount of generated data, highresolution terrain surveys tend to be small or medium sized and available on limited portion of earth. Here comes the need to merge large-scale height maps that typically are made available for free at worldwide level, with very specific high resolute datasets. One the other hand, the third dimension increases the user experience and the data representation quality, unlocking new possibilities in data analysis for civil protection, real estate, urban planning, environment monitoring, etc. The open-source 3D virtual globes, which are trending topics in Geovisual Analytics, aim at improving the visualization of geographical data provided by standard web services or with proprietary formats. This tool is able to merge heterogeneous-resolution datasets, and to provide a multi-resolution worldwide terrain services fully compatible with CesiumJS and therefore accessible via web using traditional browser without any additional plug-in. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Terrain%20Builder" title="Terrain Builder">Terrain Builder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=WebGL" title=" WebGL"> WebGL</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Virtual%20Globe" title=" Virtual Globe"> Virtual Globe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CesiumJS" title=" CesiumJS"> CesiumJS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tiled%20Map%20Service" title=" Tiled Map Service"> Tiled Map Service</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TMS" title=" TMS"> TMS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Height-Map" title=" Height-Map"> Height-Map</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Regular%20Grid" title=" Regular Grid"> Regular Grid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Geovisual%20Analytics" title=" Geovisual Analytics"> Geovisual Analytics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DTM" title=" DTM"> DTM</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35472/heterogeneous-resolution-and-multi-source-terrain-builder-for-cesiumjs-webgl-virtual-globe" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35472.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">425</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Compression and Air Storage Systems for Small Size CAES Plants: Design and Off-Design Analysis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Coriolano%20Salvini">Coriolano Salvini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ambra%20Giovannelli"> Ambra Giovannelli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of renewable energy sources for electric power production leads to reduced CO2 emissions and contributes to improving the domestic energy security. On the other hand, the intermittency and unpredictability of their availability poses relevant problems in fulfilling safely and in a cost efficient way the load demand along the time. Significant benefits in terms of “grid system applications”, “end-use applications” and “renewable applications” can be achieved by introducing energy storage systems. Among the currently available solutions, CAES (Compressed Air Energy Storage) shows favorable features. Small-medium size plants equipped with artificial air reservoirs can constitute an interesting option to get efficient and cost-effective distributed energy storage systems. The present paper is addressed to the design and off-design analysis of the compression system of small size CAES plants suited to absorb electric power in the range of hundreds of kilowatt. The system of interest is constituted by an intercooled (in case aftercooled) multi-stage reciprocating compressor and a man-made reservoir obtained by connecting large diameter steel pipe sections. A specific methodology for the system preliminary sizing and off-design modeling has been developed. Since during the charging phase the electric power absorbed along the time has to change according to the peculiar CAES requirements and the pressure ratio increases continuously during the filling of the reservoir, the compressor has to work at variable mass flow rate. In order to ensure an appropriately wide range of operations, particular attention has been paid to the selection of the most suitable compressor capacity control device. Given the capacity regulation margin of the compressor and the actual level of charge of the reservoir, the proposed approach allows the instant-by-instant evaluation of minimum and maximum electric power absorbable from the grid. The developed tool gives useful information to appropriately size the compression system and to manage it in the most effective way. Various cases characterized by different system requirements are analysed. Results are given and widely discussed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=artificial%20air%20storage%20reservoir" title="artificial air storage reservoir">artificial air storage reservoir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressed%20air%20energy%20storage%20%28CAES%29" title=" compressed air energy storage (CAES)"> compressed air energy storage (CAES)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressor%20design" title=" compressor design"> compressor design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression%20system%20management." title=" compression system management."> compression system management.</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46701/compression-and-air-storage-systems-for-small-size-caes-plants-design-and-off-design-analysis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46701.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">227</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> A Sustainable Pt/BaCe₁₋ₓ₋ᵧZrₓGdᵧO₃ Catalyst for Dry Reforming of Methane-Derived from Recycled Primary Pt</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Varotto">Alessio Varotto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lorenzo%20Freschi"> Lorenzo Freschi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Umberto%20Pasqual%20Laverdura"> Umberto Pasqual Laverdura</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anastasia%20Moschovi"> Anastasia Moschovi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Davide%20Pumiglia"> Davide Pumiglia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iakovos%20Yakoumis"> Iakovos Yakoumis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marta%20Feroci"> Marta Feroci</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Luisa%20Grilli"> Maria Luisa Grilli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Dry reforming of Methane (DRM) is considered one of the most valuable technologies for green-house gas valorization thanks to the fact that through this reaction, it is possible to obtain syngas, a mixture of H₂ and CO in an H₂/CO ratio suitable for utilization in the Fischer-Tropsch process of high value-added chemicals and fuels. Challenges of the DRM process are the reduction of costs due to the high temperature of the process and the high cost of precious metals of the catalyst, the metal particles sintering, and carbon deposition on the catalysts’ surface. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of the synthesis of catalysts using a leachate solution containing Pt coming directly from the recovery of spent diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) without further purification. An unusual perovskite support for DRM, the BaCe₁₋ₓ₋ᵧZrₓGdᵧO₃ (BCZG) perovskite, has been chosen as the catalyst support because of its high thermal stability and capability to produce oxygen vacancies, which suppress the carbon deposition and enhance the catalytic activity of the catalyst. BCZG perovskite has been synthesized by a sol-gel modified Pechini process and calcinated in air at 1100 °C. BCZG supports have been impregnated with a Pt-containing leachate solution of DOC, obtained by a mild hydrometallurgical recovery process, as reported elsewhere by some of the authors of this manuscript. For comparison reasons, a synthetic solution obtained by digesting commercial Pt-black powder in aqua regia was used for BCZG support impregnation. Pt nominal content was 2% in both BCZG-based catalysts formed by real and synthetic solutions. The structure and morphology of catalysts were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) was used to study the thermal stability of the catalyst’s samples. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis provided a high surface area of the catalysts. H₂-TPR (Temperature Programmed Reduction) analysis was used to study the consumption of hydrogen for reducibility, and it was associated with H₂-TPD characterization to study the dispersion of Pt on the surface of the support and calculate the number of active sites used by the precious metal. Dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction, carried out in a fixed bed reactor, showed a high conversion efficiency of CO₂ and CH4. At 850°C, CO₂ and CH₄ conversion were close to 100% for the catalyst obtained with the aqua regia-based solution of commercial Pt-black, and ~70% (for CH₄) and ~80 % (for CO₂) in the case of real HCl-based leachate solution. H₂/CO ratios were ~0.9 and ~0.70 in the first and latter cases, respectively. As far as we know, this is the first pioneering work in which a BCGZ catalyst and a real Pt-containing leachate solution were successfully employed for DRM reaction. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dry%20reforming%20of%20methane" title="dry reforming of methane">dry reforming of methane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=perovskite" title=" perovskite"> perovskite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PGM" title=" PGM"> PGM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=recycled%20Pt" title=" recycled Pt"> recycled Pt</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=syngas" title=" syngas"> syngas</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/187442/a-sustainable-ptbace1zrgdo3-catalyst-for-dry-reforming-of-methane-derived-from-recycled-primary-pt" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/187442.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">37</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance as a Potential Analytical Tool to Assess Thermisation in Ewe&#039;s Milk</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandra%20Pardu">Alessandra Pardu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Curti"> Elena Curti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Caredda"> Marco Caredda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Dedola"> Alessio Dedola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Margherita%20Addis"> Margherita Addis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Massimo%20Pes"> Massimo Pes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonio%20Pirisi"> Antonio Pirisi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tonina%20Roggio"> Tonina Roggio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sergio%20Uzzau"> Sergio Uzzau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Roberto%20Anedda"> Roberto Anedda</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Some of the artisanal cheeses products of European Countries certificated as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) are made from raw milk. To recognise potential frauds (e.g. pasteurisation or thermisation of milk aimed at raw milk cheese production), the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay is currently applied only for pasteurisation, although it is known to have notable limitations for the validation of ALP enzymatic state in nonbovine milk. It is known that frauds considerably impact on customers and certificating institutions, sometimes resulting in a damage of the product image and potential economic losses for cheesemaking producers. Robust, validated, and univocal analytical methods are therefore needed to allow Food Control and Security Organisms, to recognise a potential fraud. In an attempt to develop a new reliable method to overcome this issue, Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR) spectroscopy has been applied in the described work. Daily fresh milk was analysed raw (680.00 µL in each 10-mm NMR glass tube) at least in triplicate. Thermally treated samples were also produced, by putting each NMR tube of fresh raw milk in water pre-heated at temperatures from 68°C up to 72°C and for up to 3 min, with continuous agitation, and quench-cooled to 25°C in a water and ice solution. Raw and thermally treated samples were analysed in terms of 1H T2 transverse relaxation times with a CPMG sequence (Recycle Delay: 6 s, interpulse spacing: 0.05 ms, 8000 data points) and quasi-continuous distributions of T2 relaxation times were obtained by CONTIN analysis. In line with previous data collected by high field NMR techniques, a decrease in the spin-spin relaxation constant T2 of the predominant 1H population was detected in heat-treated milk as compared to raw milk. The decrease of T2 parameter is consistent with changes in chemical exchange and diffusive phenomena, likely associated to changes in milk protein (i.e. whey proteins and casein) arrangement promoted by heat treatment. Furthermore, experimental data suggest that molecular alterations are strictly dependent on the specific heat treatment conditions (temperature/time). Such molecular variations in milk, which are likely transferred to cheese during cheesemaking, highlight the possibility to extend the TD-NMR technique directly on cheese to develop a method for assessing a fraud related to the use of a milk thermal treatment in PDO raw milk cheese. Results suggest that TDNMR assays might pave a new way to the detailed characterisation of heat treatments of milk. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cheese%20fraud" title="cheese fraud">cheese fraud</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=milk" title=" milk"> milk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pasteurisation" title=" pasteurisation"> pasteurisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TD-NMR" title=" TD-NMR"> TD-NMR</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79960/time-domain-nuclear-magnetic-resonance-as-a-potential-analytical-tool-to-assess-thermisation-in-ewes-milk" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79960.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">242</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Amyloid Angiopathy and Golf: Two Opposite but Close Worlds</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrea%20Bertocchi">Andrea Bertocchi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Barnaba%20Di%20Fonzo"> Alessio Barnaba Di Fonzo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Davide%20Talarico"> Davide Talarico</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Simone%20Rivaroli"> Simone Rivaroli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jeff%20Konin"> Jeff Konin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The patient is a 89 years old male (180cm/85kg) retired notary former golfer with no past medical history. He describes a progressive ideomotor slowdown for 14 months. There were also episodes of aggression towards his wife and staff. At the time, the patient takes no prescribed medications. He has difficulty eating, dressing, and some problems with personal hygiene. In the initial visit, the patient was alert, cooperating, and performed simple tasks; however, he has a hearing impairment, slowed spontaneous speech, and amnestic deficit to the short story. Ideomotor apraxia is not present. He scored 20 points in the MMSE. From a motor function, he has deficits using Medical Research Council (MRC) 3-/5 in bilateral lower limbs and requires maximum assistance from sit to stand with existing premature fatigue. He’s unable to walk for about 1 month. Tremors and hypertonia are absent. BERG was unable to be administered, and BARTHEL was obtained 45/100. An Amyloid Angiopathy is suspected and then confirmed at the neurological examination. Therehabilitation objectives were the recovery of mobility and reinforcement of the UE/LE, especially legs, for recovery of standing and walking. The cognitive aspect was also an essential factor for the patient's recovery. The literature doesn’t demonstrate any particular studies regarding motor and cognitive rehabilitation on this pathology. Failing to manage his attention on exercise and tending to be disinterested and falling asleep constantly, we used golf-specific gestures to stimulate his mind to work and get results because the patient has memory recall of golf related movement. We worked for 4 months with a frequency of 3 sessions per week. Every session lasted for 45 minutes. After 4 months of work, the patient walked independently with the use of a stick for about 120 meters without stopping. Cognitively, he no longer has episodes of aggression, although the short-term memory and concentration deficit remains. Amyloid Angiopathy is a mix of motor and cognitive disorder. It is worth the thought that cerebral amyloid angiopathy manifests with functional deficits due to strokes and bleedings and, as such, has an important rehabilitation indication, as classical stroke is not associated with amyloidosis. Exploring the motor patterns learned at a young age and remained in the implicit and explicit memory of the patient allowed us to set up effective work and to obtain significant results in the short-middle term. Surely many studies will still be done regarding this pathology and its rehabilitation, but the importance of the cognitive sphere applied to the motor sphere could represent an important starting point. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=amyloid%20angiopathy" title="amyloid angiopathy">amyloid angiopathy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cognitive%20rehabilitation" title=" cognitive rehabilitation"> cognitive rehabilitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=golf" title=" golf"> golf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=motor%20disorder" title=" motor disorder"> motor disorder</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152504/amyloid-angiopathy-and-golf-two-opposite-but-close-worlds" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152504.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Materials for Volatile Organic Compounds Sensing Applications: Strategies to Improve Sensing Performances</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudio%20Clemente">Claudio Clemente</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Valentina%20Gargiulo"> Valentina Gargiulo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessio%20Occhicone"> Alessio Occhicone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanni%20Piero%20Pepe"> Giovanni Piero Pepe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanni%20Ausanio"> Giovanni Ausanio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michela%20Alf%C3%A8"> Michela Alfè</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions represent a serious risk to human health and the integrity of the ecosystems, especially at high concentrations. For this reason, it is very important to continuously monitor environmental quality and develop fast and reliable portable sensors to allow analysis on site. Chemiresistors have become promising candidates for VOC sensing as their ease of fabrication, variety of suitable sensitive materials, and simple sensing data. A chemoresistive gas sensor is a transducer that allows to measure the concentration of an analyte in the gas phase because the changes in resistance are proportional to the amount of the analyte present. The selection of the sensitive material, which interacts with the target analyte, is very important for the sensor performance. The most used VOC detection materials are metal oxides (MOx) for their rapid recovery, high sensitivity to various gas molecules, easy fabrication. Their sensing performance can be improved in terms of operating temperature, selectivity, and detection limit. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted a lot of attention also in the field of gas sensing due to their high porosity, high surface area, tunable morphologies, structural variety. MOFs are generated by the self-assembly of multidentate organic ligands connecting with adjacent multivalent metal nodes via strong coordination interactions, producing stable and highly ordered crystalline porous materials with well-designed structures. However, most MOFs intrinsically exhibit low electrical conductivity. To improve this property, MOFs can be combined with organic and inorganic materials in a hybrid fashion to produce composite materials or can be transformed into more stable structures. MOFs, indeed, can be employed as the precursors of metal oxides with well-designed architectures via the calcination method. The MOF-derived MOx partially preserved the original structure with high surface area and intrinsic open pores, which act as trapping centers for gas molecules, and showed a higher electrical conductivity. Core-shell heterostructures, in which the surface of a metal oxide core is completely coated by a MOF shell, forming a junction at the core-shell heterointerface, can also be synthesized. Also, nanocomposite in which MOF structures are intercalated with graphene related materials can also be produced, and the conductivity increases thanks to the high mobility of electrons of carbon materials. As MOF structures, zinc-based MOFs belonging to the ZIF family were selected in this work. Several Zn-based materials based and/or derived from MOFs were produced, structurally characterized, and arranged in a chemo resistive architecture, also exploring the potentiality of different approaches of sensing layer deposition based on PLD (pulsed laser deposition) and, in case of thermally labile materials, MAPLE (Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation) to enhance the adhesion to the support. The sensors were tested in a controlled humidity chamber, allowing for the possibility of varying the concentration of ethanol, a typical analyte chosen among the VOCs for a first survey. The effect of heating the chemiresistor to improve sensing performances was also explored. Future research will focus on exploring new manufacturing processes for MOF-based gas sensors with the aim to improve sensitivity, selectivity and reduce operating temperatures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chemiresistors" title="chemiresistors">chemiresistors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20sensors" title=" gas sensors"> gas sensors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=graphene%20related%20materials" title=" graphene related materials"> graphene related materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laser%20deposition" title=" laser deposition"> laser deposition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MAPLE" title=" MAPLE"> MAPLE</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metal-organic%20frameworks" title=" metal-organic frameworks"> metal-organic frameworks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metal%20oxides" title=" metal oxides"> metal oxides</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanocomposites" title=" nanocomposites"> nanocomposites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sensing%20performance" title=" sensing performance"> sensing performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transduction%20mechanism" title=" transduction mechanism"> transduction mechanism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=volatile%20organic%20compounds" title=" volatile organic compounds"> volatile organic compounds</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184645/metal-organic-frameworks-based-materials-for-volatile-organic-compounds-sensing-applications-strategies-to-improve-sensing-performances" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184645.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">63</span> </span> </div> </div> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
