Sarah finds herself caught up in what happens when the magical is made to collide with the mundane. <br><br>It's an atmospheric read, with some fantastical set pieces that I bet would look amazing in a TV adaptation, but the plotting was by numbers and the characters felt stock. I know it might seem silly to complain about historical accuracy in a novella <u class="showmore_hide">where people have magical powers, but <spoiler>there were no nunneries in Restoration England; a woman from a working-class background is not going to think of the wife of a knight as "Faith"; the wife of a knight is "Lady [Surname]", not "Lady [First Name]"; Christians in 1670s London would not be doing their laundry on a Sunday; etc. I got the sense that Rather had read up on Christopher Wren and early modern gynaecology, but not more broadly on the cultural and social history of time. </spoiler> Her characters were too modern in their attitudes, in how they carried themselves. At any rate, <i>Forsaken</i> arrived at the right mood and time (thanks, Netgalley!) and proved an enjoyable read.<br><br>I'd definitely recommend it, but there are, however, some caveats. One is a high tolerance for the question of authenticity in many forms. Though the sisters never set out to be heroes, in [b:Sisters of the Vast Black|44581558|Sisters of the Vast Black (Our Lady of Endless Worlds #1)|Lina Rather|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1558536373l/44581558._SY75_.jpg|69197753], they found themselves taking actions that would be deemed as heroic, strictly by following their ethical dictates. <i>Forsaken</i> is dealing with some of the consequences of owning those actions, and choosing how they will be defined. After the fallout of <i>Vast Black,</i> we're also left knowing that they head of their small order was not the person they all thought she was, and some of the sisters are still coping with emotional fallout. Two, particularly now that I'm thinking about my review, though <i>Forsaken</i> takes place some time after the events of<i> Vast Black,</i> I think it would be more enjoyable to read the two closer together. I had forgotten most of <i>Vast Black</i> (I should have read my review, honestly), so there was a certain amount of impatience with what I saw as endless dithering. Three, and again keeping <i>Seven Down</i> in mind, I'd recommend one prefer the whole 'ship in space' premise.<br><br>The writing--in the 'words-strung-together' sense--is still solid. Highlights were made. The plotting felt more hesitant, and less streamlined than the first, so if you were frustrated there, you know it won't go well here. There's a secondary plot about the living ships and the ex-sister, but I don't know that it felt as integrated as I would have liked--it was rather <i>plot adjacent</i>. I found myself wanting to know more about what was going on in that ship, and the research they were doing. But this is less meme and more character study in the most unique space faring vehicle yet (even surpassing Tchaikovsky's webship). In fact, I can wholeheartedly recommend it, with a caveat. Something like a cross between [b:The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet|22733729|The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)|Becky Chambers|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405532474l/22733729._SY75_.jpg|42270825] <u class="showmore_hide">and [b:A Memory Called Empire|37794149|A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan, #1)|Arkady Martine|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1526486698l/37794149._SY75_.jpg|59457173], this should appeal to those who can let go some of the demands of physics and biochemistry, and follow Rather's focus on the personal and ethical choices of the various crew members.<br><br>First, and most oddly, it's a living ship--not an AI or brain in a shell, mind you, but a type of slug with a hardened exoskeleton. I think. I might have got a bit lost in those details, although it goes into a bit about how the ships grow and develop. The sisters also have an ongoing debate about whether or not their ship has a soul.<br><br>The sisters are a varied bunch. I was worried that they wouldn't stand out, but we aren't inundated with a nunnery, only a handful of people. They do achieve some individuality in their characterization. The Reverend Mother is starting to mentally deteriorate. She's able to cover her infirmity because she long ago took a vow of silence, only speaking through signing. Sister Lucia often serves as the Mother's interpreter for finer points of meaning. Sister Gemma joined out of expedience and has a talent for caring for the ship. Sister Mary Catherine is an Earther and everyone knows she won't be staying long. Sister Faustina is not in the least a gentle soul, but she comes through under pressure. Then there's their late arrival:<br><b><br>"Many of the adjustments to spaceborn life he found primitive, upsetting, and uncomfortable. They had not shut off the gravity since he arrived, not even on holy days, because it upset his stomach. He was very well-meaning, and like most people who were well-meaning and ignorant, he bulldozed through everything in his way with not even a thought."<br></b><br>The world-building is intriguing. Being of anti-religious persuasion, I did not find the backdrop of religion overwhelming or boring. If there's any downside at all to the world-building, it's that the idea that the Catholic Church manages to remain relatively unchanged so far into the future. But what do I know? It's tried to remain structurally and theologically similar to a thousand years ago, so it might manage. As the story continues, more details and history get added through the story of the sisters.<br><br>If I had any complaint, it is that the pace seems uneven, and the more thoughtful build of the beginning isn't matched by the ratcheted up events in the final third. Nonetheless, it remained interesting, with further implications into the world. I loved how midwifery and the Other World worked together in an alternate history to tell of the "monstrous" births. It shone light on how, unfortunately, your livelihood always came before anything else and pivoted your life even if you had to swallow down everything you ever wanted.
