The "courts" refer to the temple courts in Jerusalem, a place where God's presence was uniquely manifested. The psalmist expresses a deep longing for communion with God, valuing a single day in His presence over a thousand days spent elsewhere. This reflects the biblical theme of God's presence being the ultimate source of joy and fulfillment, as seen in other scriptures like Psalm 16:11, which speaks of the fullness of joy in God's presence. The courts of the temple symbolize access to God, and this longing prefigures the New Testament revelation of Jesus Christ, who provides believers with direct access to God (Hebrews 10:19-22).
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
The role of a doorkeeper was a humble position, often associated with the Levites who served in the temple (1 Chronicles 9:19). This statement highlights the psalmist's humility and willingness to serve in even the lowest capacity if it means being close to God. It underscores the value of service and presence over status and comfort. The "house of my God" refers to the temple, a central place of worship and sacrifice. This desire to be near God, even in a lowly position, foreshadows the New Testament teaching of servanthood and humility exemplified by Jesus (Mark 10:45).
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
"Tents" symbolize temporary dwelling places, often associated with nomadic life. In contrast to the permanence and sanctity of God's house, the tents of the wicked represent a life apart from God, characterized by sin and moral instability. The psalmist's choice to reject the temporary pleasures and security of the wicked for the eternal joy of God's presence aligns with biblical teachings on the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures (Hebrews 11:25). This choice reflects the call to holiness and separation from sin, as seen throughout scripture, and points to the ultimate separation of the righteous and the wicked in the final judgment (Matthew 25:31-46).
Persons / Places / Events
1. The Sons of Korah
The authors of Psalm 84, a group of Levitical singers and musicians who served in the temple.

2. The Courts of the Lord
Refers to the temple courts, a place of worship and the presence of God.

3. The House of My God
Symbolizes the dwelling place of God, representing His presence and fellowship.

4. The Tents of the Wicked
Represents places of sin and separation from God, contrasting with the holiness of God's dwelling.

5. The Threshold
The entrance or doorway, symbolizing humility and a desire to be close to God, even if only at the entrance.
Teaching Points
The Value of God's Presence
The psalmist emphasizes that even a single day in God's presence surpasses a thousand days elsewhere. The idea of "doorkeeper," however, though not necessarily involved in the Hebrew word, is suggested in a Korahite psalm, since the Korahites were "keepers of the gates of the tabernacle, and keepers of the entry." Compare with this wish the words which a Greek poet puts into the mouth of his hero, who sweeps the threshold of Apollo's temple:
"A pleasant task, O Phoebus, I discharge,
Before thine house in reverence of thy seat
Of prophecy, an honoured task to me."
EURIPIDES, Ion, 128.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 10. - For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand; i.e. than any number of days elsewhere. It is difficult to trace any connection between these concluding verses. They appear to consist of distinct thoughts, which arise in the writer's mind, and are jotted down as they occur to him. One is a thought of loyalty, which finds vent in a prayer for the king (ver. 9). Another is a reflection of the main thought of the psalm, the incomparable blessedness of dwelling in God's house. A third (vers. 11, 12) is the joy and glory of perpetual communion with God and trust in God. See the remarks of Professor Cheyne ('The Book of Psalms,' p. 237). I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God; literally, at the threshold; but the meaning is well expressed by the Authorized Version.
