The harp, a stringed instrument, was a common tool for worship in ancient Israel, symbolizing joy and reverence. In 1 Samuel 16:23, David played the harp to soothe King Saul, indicating its power to bring peace and spiritual focus. The call to praise the LORD with the harp emphasizes the importance of music in worship, reflecting the beauty and harmony of God's creation. This phrase encourages believers to use their talents and resources to glorify God, aligning with the broader biblical theme of worship through music as seen in 2 Chronicles 5:13-14, where the temple musicians played instruments to honor God.
make music to Him with ten strings.
The reference to "ten strings" likely points to a specific type of lyre or harp used in ancient Israelite worship. The number ten may symbolize completeness or perfection, suggesting that worship should be wholehearted and complete. This phrase underscores the diversity and richness of musical expression in worship, inviting believers to engage fully with their instruments and voices. The use of ten strings can also be seen as a metaphor for the fullness of praise that God deserves, as seen in Psalm 150, which calls for a variety of instruments to be used in worship. This reflects the cultural context of the time, where music was an integral part of religious and communal life, and serves as a reminder of the joy and creativity that should characterize our worship today.
Persons / Places / Events
1. The LORD (Yahweh)
The central figure in this verse, Yahweh is the covenant name of God, emphasizing His eternal presence and faithfulness.

2. The Psalmist
Traditionally attributed to David, the psalmist is the one encouraging worship and thanksgiving through music.

3. The Lyre
A stringed musical instrument used in ancient Israelite worship, symbolizing joy and celebration.

4. Ten Strings
Refers to a specific type of harp or lyre, emphasizing the completeness and fullness of worship.

5. Worship in Ancient Israel
The cultural and religious context in which music played a vital role in expressing devotion and gratitude to God.
Teaching Points
The Importance of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a vital aspect of worship, acknowledging God's goodness and faithfulness.

Music as Worship
Music is a powerful tool for expressing our gratitude and devotion to God. The harp obtains mention here for the first time in the Psalms. Reference, however, had been made to it previously in Genesis, Job, and the First Book of Samuel. There is reason to believe that the instrument, as known to the Hebrews, was a simple one, consisting of a nearly triangular framework of wood, crossed by seven strings. The Egyptians were acquainted from early times with a very much more elaborate instrument - harps which stood six feet high upon a broad base of their own, and had as many as twenty-two strings (Rawlinson, 'History of Ancient Egypt,' vol. 1. p. 521). The harp was regarded by the Hebrews as peculiarly fitted for sacred music (see 1 Samuel 10:5; 2 Samuel 6:5; 1 Chronicles 15:16; 1 Chronicles 25:1, 3, 6; 2 Chronicles 5:12; 2 Chronicles 29:25; Nehemiah 12:27, etc.). Sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings; rather, sing unto him with the lute of ten strings. One instrument only is here mentioned - a lute or psaltery (nebel), having ten strings (comp. Psalm 92:3; Psalm 144:9). The nebel was an instrument differing from the harp chiefly in the arrangement of the strings.
