Va., and should arrive at other country stations across the United States by Sept. 11.</p><p>On the record: If Rodney Crowell`s fast-rising Top 10 remake of Buck Owens` old ”Above and Beyond” reaches No. 1, as seems likely, Crowell will be the first country artist to have five No. 1 singles from the same album. He will thus beat Earl Thomas Conley, as well as his own wife (Rosanne Cash), both of whom had four. . . . Only two new female vocalists have broken into the country charts` Top 20 in the past year. They are Lorrie Morgan and Mary Chapin Carpenter. . . . Irrepressible Becky Hobbs, who is coming back on RCA with the same album she had out on MTM Records when MTM folded, says she wrote her current single, ”Do You Feel the Same Way Too,” in a motel room ”on the road somewhere. I was picturing this guy in my head, and playing around on my little keyboard and came up with this little riff. Basically, I wanted the song to have a 1950s feel to it.” . . . Allison.</p><div class="dfp-ad dfp-cube_article" id="div-gpt-ad-cube_article" style="visibility:hidden"> <div class="htlad-cube_article" data-unit="chicagotribune.com/news/cube_article" data-targeting=""></div> </div><p>In one of the more unusual happenstances on the modern scene, Vern Gosdin`s ex-wife makes a brief appearance in the video of his next single,</p><p>”Alone.”</p><p>”He asked her if she wanted to be in the video, since most of the album was written about her,” a Columbia Records source says, ”and she said yes.” The new album, of which ”Alone” is the title song, has picked up where its popular predecessor, ”Chiseled in Stone,” left off, and Gosdin, who claims he never used to get royalty checks during his many years of recording for small companies, can no longer make that claim.</p><p>The other day, in fact, he reportedly received three in one day-and took each to the bank separately to receive the maximum thrill. To the bewildered teller, he is said to have gleefully explained: ”I`m rich, I`m rich, I`m rich.”</p><p>On the Road: In Toronto, Randy Travis and Ricky Van Shelton recently made a rare joint appearance-and drew about 20,000 people. . . . Travis recently made two high-grossing appearances with K.T. Oslin-at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles (more than $375,000 total for 3 days) and, along with Buck Owens, at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles (more than $235,000 for one day).</p><p>Charlie Daniels recently supplied the second half of a Yankee Stadium doubleheader in which the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles constituted his opening act. After a regular-season game between the Yankees and the Orioles, Daniels and his Charlie Daniels Band did one of their own regular shows-and were introduced by former Yankee star Mickey Mantle.</p><p>Et cetera: ”Steel Magnolias,” the forthcoming all-star-cast movie in which Dolly Parton plays a prominent role, is to premiere in New York Nov. 5 and in Natchitoches, La. (where it was filmed), Nov. 10. It will then open in 250 theaters Nov. 17 and remaining ones Dec. 15. . . . Two widely differing country-oriented shows recently sold out at Wolf Trap Farm in Vienna, Va., a suburb of Washington. First was Chet Atkins and Garrison Keillor and soon afterward the Oak Ridge Boys and Wild Rose. Both shows drew around 7,000 persons.</p><p>Stella Parton`s recent appearances on the CBS-TV sports specials ”Think Fast: The Dodge International Star Challenge” celebrity auto race were filmed in May in Indianapolis, where celebrity drivers attended the Skip Barber School of Racing, then drove in qualifying rounds, competed in three heats and then the championship race.</p><p>Parton had the fastest female qualifying time-more than 65 miles an hour- and might have competed in the championship race had she not spun out and suffered minor injuries in her race`s sixth lap.
